    1. [NYMONTGO] Betsey TAYLOR, b.c. 1797
    2. Mark Wentling
    3. Hi folks, Does anyone have record of one Betsey TAYLOR, born about 1797 in Montgomery County (according to census records)? She married Merchant CARTER who was born in Litchfield Co., Connecticut, who was living in Jefferson County by about 1804. Either he met her in Montgomery County or in Jefferson County, where a Benjamin Taylor was also a nearby settler. Family tradition is that Betsey was an Indian (we'll see!) and her father was supposedly a businessman from near New York City and he had a funny first name (no idea what it was). Later in life she married Nathan MARBLE. She's buried in Jefferson County. You can read about the family at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/welcome.html Thanks for any leads! Mark A. Wentling Washington, D.C.

    1. [NYMONTGO] New Website for Albany Area
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have begun a website designed to aid the genealogical researcher who has interest in Albany, NY and the surrounding counties. It focuses on the following NY counties: Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Schoharie, Montgomery and Greene. At present, the major part of the site consists of links to vital records (birth, baptism, marriage, and death), plus some censuses, deeds, wills, military records, various other kinds of lists (tax, poor house, etc.), maps, online articles, etc. Also, my Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources, which some of you have already seen, has been moved to this NEW location. If you had it bookmarked, be aware that you will have to bookmark it again. Between other projects, I will try to transcribe some records and post them. I have some things begun, but they were put on hold while trying to get this site working. I would welcome any census, cemetery or church records for these counties if you would like to transcribe them and have your work posted. You would get full credit for the labor. There are other records or lists of people that would be appropriate as well. The site is far from finished, but I decided to open it for visitors while I continue working on it. Schoharie and Greene counties are poorly represented at this point. If you know of links that I have missed, I would welcome your suggestions. 1. [NYMONTGO] Arza GAGE & Mary Polly HERRICK, early 1800s
    2. RICHARD L HERRICK
    3. I am posting this on the Montgomery County, NY list because this family moved to the Town of Springfield, Montgomery County, NY in 1787 from Bennington, VT, and remained there when it became Otsego County until at least 1806, thence may have removed to DeRutyer, Madison Co., NY or possibly in somewhere in Montgomery County, NY Arza GAGE & Mary Polly HERRICK, early 1800s Surname: HERRICK, SPRAGUE, GAGE, TUBBS, SPENCER, TIDD, ARNOLD Mary Polly HERRICK was one of six children born to Cyprian HERRICK & Betsey SPRAGUE. She was b. September 13, 1798, [proven per family Bible], in the Town of Springfield, Otsego Co., NY and d. unknown. [Dates following are taken from Caroline Gage TIDD's DAR National #19962 application for membership, dated May 19, 1897, and an e-mail from a reply to a previous post. Mary Polly HERRICK m. Arza GAGE March 09, 1816, very likely in DeRuyter, Madison County, NY. Arza was b. June 12, 1790 at S.E. Dutchess County, NY and died January 16, 1866 probably in DeRuyter. They had at least one child Edward Lovell GAGE who m. Jane Mitchell ARNOLD. Their daughter was Caroline GAGE who m. Edward Kingsbury TIDD. Cyprian HERRICK was b. October 27, 1758 in Norwich, CT and d. 1806 in the Town of Springfield, NY. When Cyprian died their six children were Nancy aged ca 16, Silence aged ca 14, Mary Polly aged ca 11, Samuel aged ca 6, and Lemont & Levantia, twins aged ca 3. Cyprian was a s/o Colonel Samuel HERRICK, Vermont Militia & Rangers, b. April 27, 1732, Coventry, CT, d. late 1800 to 1803, Town of Springfield, Otsego Co., NY & Silence KINSLEY - KINGSLEY. The DAR application states that Mary Polly HERRICK was of "Springfield, NY, later DeRuyter, NY." I suspect that maybe Betsey [SPRAGUE] HERRICK may have m. 2nd and removed to DeRuyter in Madison County with her new spouse or she may have removed there 1st and then m. 2nd. Does any one recognize any of the individuals cited above? Does anyone know if Betsey [SPRAGUE] HERRICK m. 2nd and settled in DeRuyter, NY? Does anyone know if Nancy, Silence or Levantia HERRICK m. in DeRutyer, NY? I know what happened to Samuel & Lemont. They were in Dale, Genesee County, now Wyoming County, NY ca 1825 [+/-] and ended up in Genesee County, MI by the mid 1850s. If anyone connects to this HERRICK -SPRAGUE -GAGE family line and would like more information please reply here on the Montgomery County List. 3. Hello, Lisa, As Hamilton Co. coordinator, have you heard of a Whittaker family from Vermont who were there about 1808? This is one of my blind alleys, looking for Clark Whittaker, who said he was born in that county about 1804 or 1808. Later he was in Edinburg, Saratoga Co., but the information about his county of birth and his parents' information is from later census enumerations. 1. [NYMONTGO] Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I have just revised and greatly expanded the "Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources" which I wrote last summer. It now contains information on 27 sites in six counties (Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Schenectady, and Montgomery). I tried to have it available at the beginning of the summer for those of you who were travelling to the area to do research. However, I was too busy trying to set up a website on which to post it. The Guide contains information about each site, including address, phone number and website URL. It also tells whether searches will be done by the staff of each facility. http://www.members.global2000.net/~clifflamere/Guide.htm Cliff

    3. Hi, I have a COOK line that married into my CROMER line in Montgomery County, New York. I have very little to go on however. I have Lizzie COOK, born in 1877. 3. Richard, thanks so much for the info on Wm. H. H. Cook. This is the closest thing to a lead I have had. I'll definitely check into that. About the town naming thing, our family legend, repeated in the Vrooman family info is that Eliza married a Cook, for whom Cook Co IL is named. Well, it didn't take much research to see that's not true. But here is the info from Palatine Il Website: "In 1850, Illinois enacted legislation directing each county to subdivide into townships of approximately six square miles. The leader of Township 42 met to choose a name and decided upon the name Palatine. It was suggested by Harrison Cook, formerly of Palatine Bridge, New York." An article in the newspaper there said it passed by only one vote. I'll let you knew if your tip turns into a find for me, thanks! 1. Re: [NYMONTGO] Harrison Koch/Cook-Palatine Bridge NY 1820ish
    2. Hi Tracy, I can verify that Harrison Cook married Eliza Ann Vroman in the Caughnawaga Reformed Church on 19 Sep 1839. The marriage is listed in the Caughnawaga Marriage book. I have Koch/Cook information in my Nellis/Nelles book. My earliest is a Caspar Koch who was born in Switzerland in 1737. His father was Caspar Koch and his mother was Veronica Muller. Information about this family is found in Henry Z Jones' "More Palatine Families of NY & NJ", p. 151-2. There is a Wm. H. Harrison Cook who was baptised in the Stone Arabia Reformed Church on 24 Oct 1813. His parents were Casper C. Cook and Anna Eve Rickard. If this is your family, I have it in my computer file. He is identified as William Henry Harrison Cook in the Nellis book. I also have information on the Rickard family. Casper C. Cook is the son of the Caspar Kock who was born in 1737. The Vroman family is a Dutch family with roots in the Albany, NY area. I have Vromans in my family. I rather doubt that any place in Illinois was named after Palatine Bridge. It is more likely that it was named after the Town of Palatine and its church. The town and church date back to the mid 1700s. The Palatinate was an area in Germany from which many persons emigrated in about 1709. Richard Hayes >From the shores of Grand Traverse Bay RchrdHayes@aol.com
