The following is a write-up copied from my website. US Map Showing Distribution of 50,000 Surnames in 1850, 1880, 1920 and 1990 (Ed Hamrick) Select a year and type in a surname. A map will appear unless the spelling of the name was not part of the top 50,000 names for that year. Censuses were used for the first three dates, phone books for 1990. Below the map will be important information (first paragraph). Try the next year, and so on. Once you see how it works, choose All Years. The maps will display one after the other so that you will be able to get an impression of migration patterns, if any. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ It is the first choice in the Map section. Have fun. Cliff
I searched for the village of Mohawk River (if it existed as a community) using three online gazetteers. I did not find it. One was a gazetteer of current NY places, one was for places in 1890, and the third was for current places that had a different name in the past. If it existed as a community, it must have been along the Mohawk River, of course. Saratoga and Albany counties only have about 13 miles of shoreline on the river. Next to the west is Schenectady Co. which is small and has about 26 miles of shoreline. Next, is Montgomery Co. which has about 48 miles of shoreline. I measure all of these on my map. Following that is Herkimer Co. which has the city of Mohawk. That sounds promising, but if it was the place, then the name Mohawk River should have showed up in the third gazetteer above. I'm sorry that none of this is valuable information in helping you to make a decision as to where to begin the search. It is my impression, possibly from a will or deed that I read online, that it was in Montgomery Co. However, it is just a fuzzy impression. re: "I would look for your John Smith in Utica " Dear Lisa Thanks for the helpful advice. With a name like Smith, I can use all the help I can get. Michele
Utica is in the region that's considered to be the Mohawk Valley. So I would look for your John Smith in Utica and the immediate surrounding area. A couple of thoughts on Mackey and Mohawk River. 1. NYS took censuses in years ending with 5. Those after 1855 list every person in a household and tell the county of birth, if in NYS, otherwise the state or country of birth. 2. US and NYS census records may show more generations in a household; if you find George Mackey, you may find him living in his parents' household, or they with him, even after his marriage. To SmittyMom, 6 years ago I started looking for my great grandfather " John Smith" from New York is all I had. My father remembered that the family had been in Amsterdam, NY. He died in his late 80's with no other family members to take care of him, I started calling hospitals. In 1958 when he died, there were no old folks homes and he had been placed in the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center in Utica, NY. They required a letter that I was his closest living relative and they sent me all the papers on him including a photo and his parents names and a list of al the people who visited him. I have since gotten the family from Camden, NY were he was born to Ireland with this info. I hope this may help you. I would also be interested in the answer. I've got a John Smith born in "Mohawk Valley". An alternate place of birth for him is Utica. Is that on the river, or just nearby - my maps aren't precise enough. Thanks Michele

This morning I posted the Nobletown and Hillsdale (Columbia Co., NY) baptism records of Rev. Gideon Bostwick, 1770-1793. He was a traveling minister from Great Barrington, MA and came into eastern NY which was, I believe, claimed as part of Massachusetts at that time. The records were typed and contributed by Susan Mulvey. Thank you Susan! To view them, go to my website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Look for "Vital Records - Births and Baptisms" You will find Nobletown there. Cliff
