Date 1998 March. Physical Details 1 slide : col. ; 35 mm. Collection City Hall Photo Lab contemporary collection Summary This building at 300 State Street at the southeast corner of Platt Street was built around 1904 for the Rochester Button Company. The company traces its roots back to 1887 when Moses B. Shantz established the button-making firm known as M.B. Shantz and Company. In 1904 it was incorporated as the Rochester Button Co. and was supposedly the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of buttons. The buttons were made of vegetable ivory, milk curd and plastic. The company merged with Capitol Plastics in 1964 to form Cap-Roc Incorporated. They were bought out by Duplan Corp. of New York City in 1968, but this factory remained a division of the corporation until production was ended here in 1990. At the time of this picture the building was occupied by Empire Brewing Company. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
