The State of NY, School at Industry (rt 251 between the W. Henrietta Rd and Scottsville) began primarily as a place to corral unwanted and unemployable children. They were nearly self sustaining, producing much of the food on its self contained farm. I was there about 1953 to play an exhibition softball game. I recall small buildings as living quarters for the "inmates" Males and females were seperate, but it was quite obvious that much fraternization had been going on. Mostly white then, and obviously retards. that we know today as Downs Syndrome. I believe the place still operates and has about 100 inmates, who if teachable, can attend grades 6-12. --- On Thu, 12/16/10, Susan <[email protected]> wrote: From: Susan <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [NYMONROE] State Agricultural & Industrial School To: [email protected] Date: Thursday, December 16, 2010, 12:33 PM Not the same place. It shows up on the 1920 census, but google didn't turn up much. There seem to be numerous "Heads" on a lot of farms, but within the household of these farms are "Officers" (that the relation given to the Head), but then they are listed with occupations like "Teacher". I'm trying to better understand what was happening. In particular, I am looking at the household of Mowry Skinkle at this url (if it posts): http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=6061&iid=4313452-00399&fn=Mowry&ln=Skinkle&st=r&ssrc=&pid=19142479.
