I was able to narrow down when my great-grandmother's 2nd husband died from the listings- a great resource. Can you tell my what the "h" stands for? I thought "home", but I see other listings with "res" that must mean residence. And the address - work address or home address? These city directories even list when someone is the widow of someone. Very interesting indeed, and would be deemed a huge violation of privacy today I imagine! Hi This sounds more like Bastian Brothers than Rochester Button Works. Bastian Brothers made all sorts of pin-on pins. At least where she worked, they made what I would call pins - political and otherwise. She would always bring me a "Happy Birthday" pin on my birthday. They were metal and had a pin on the back. When she passed away, I found hundreds of pins/buttons in her apartment - political and commemorative. They may have also made clothing buttons, but I never heard anything about this. I have a picture in my mind of a lot of spinsters sitting on stools in a large, cold room putting these buttons together based on how my great aunt described her work. Date 1998 March. Physical Details 1 slide : col. ; 35 mm. Collection City Hall Photo Lab contemporary collection Summary This building at 300 State Street at the southeast corner of Platt Street was built around 1904 for the Rochester Button Company. The company traces its roots back to 1887 when Moses B. Shantz established the button-making firm known as M.B. Shantz and Company. In 1904 it was incorporated as the Rochester Button Co. and was supposedly the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of buttons. The buttons were made of vegetable ivory, milk curd and plastic. The company merged with Capitol Plastics in 1964 to form Cap-Roc Incorporated. They were bought out by Duplan Corp. of New York City in 1968, but this factory remained a division of the corporation until production was ended here in 1990. At the time of this picture the building was occupied by Empire Brewing Company. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The building has been renovated and is now occupied by commercial tenants. Button Factory At 294 and 300 State Street, c. 1900, diagonally across the street from Kodak Tower, you will find the former Rochester Button Company. This early 20th-century company once was reputedly the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of buttons. At that time, buttons were made from "vegetable ivory," processed nuts imported from Mexico, South America and Africa. I'm not familiar with the company, but you may be able to find somthing else about them. There was an F. B. Rae Oil Works Company in Rochester that had an explosion in 1923. Now you've gotten me interested in the Button Works. It sounds fascinating! Good luck with your research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
