Author: LocalHistoryDivRPL Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.monroe/12132.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Following the 1930 census, it appears that Mowry and Dora (his wife) moved to where they could work at the Gowanda State Hospital in Erie County. This might be because he was listed as a "trained nurse", and as another has written, Industry/Rush was primarily a school for delinquents, awhile Gowanda is a psychiatric hospital. The former Gowanda State Hospital was turned into Collins/Gowanda Correctional Facility in the early 1990's. Others have posted that he was the grandson of Isaac Skinkle, and there is a family tree in WorldConnect for Isaac. OTOH, his draft card for WW I says that he is a school supervisor. He may have worked for the state, in which case there might be pension records for him. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NYMONROE] Index to Episcopal Church records, 1820-1851
    2. Marjorie Bridges
    3. Could the person who has the Episcopal Church record book examine it for any births, marriages, deaths for the children of Asa Wells and wife Nancy?  (This would be Eliza, Harriet, Nelson, Henry, Anson and Elvira Wells.) Elvira died in 1828 and Asa in 1829. Nancy supposed died in 1855, past the dates in the book. Did the Baptist Church records from early 1800s in Monroe  County survive, also?   I would be interested in examining those, too. Margie

They moved from Rochester out to Rush about 1908 and it was set up with cottages that could handle somewhere between 20 to 30 boys. There is a fairly good web page at: http://www.correctionhistory.org/sheriffs/rochester/html/rochjails_theory1.html I helped deliver a pool table there in the late 1970s and there was a 8 foot fence around the whole complex. In the last 30 years they have been getting harder criminals. When I went past the complex this spring, they now have a 15 foot fence with razor wire on top. 3. The State of NY, School at Industry (rt 251 between the W. Henrietta Rd and Scottsville) began primarily as a place to corral unwanted and unemployable children. They were nearly self sustaining, producing much of the food on its self contained farm. I was there about 1953 to play an exhibition softball game. I recall small buildings as living quarters for the "inmates" Males and females were seperate, but it was quite obvious that much fraternization had been going on. Mostly white then, and obviously retards. that we know today as Downs Syndrome. I believe the place still operates and has about 100 inmates, who if teachable, can attend grades 6-12. --- On Thu, 12/16/10, Susan <[email protected]> wrote: From: Susan <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [NYMONROE] State Agricultural & Industrial School To: [email protected] Date: Thursday, December 16, 2010, 12:33 PM Not the same place.  He's asking about the one in Rush. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Bohrer" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2010 12:01 PM Subject: Re: [NYMONROE] State Agricultural & Industrial School Kay, give this a try.
