There was a short time between 1847 and 1849 when some towns kept vital records. Some of these are still with the towns, some have been transcribed by such groups as the Central NY Genealogical Society. These are NOT subject to the law that was passed in 1880 and should be made available to a researcher, although some town clerks may not realize this.
