    1. Sturtevants in Madison

    3. Hello, I'm trying to locate copies of local or church records, newspaper articles, etc. for some ancestors who lived in and around modern Madison County in the 19th century. I'm trying to prove Mayflower ancestry and am having trouble digging up primary source documents for 2 generations. Below are the names of the couples I'm looking for information on and the year and county and state/colony they were married in, but the couples married in about 1803 and 1831 are the ones I need the most help with. James Watts Sturtevant and May Lydia Spooner (1887, Madison Co., NY) Alvin Sturtevant and Adelia Luzette Curtis (1860, Madison, NY) Ornan Sturtevant and Artimicia Stebbins (1831, Madison, NY) James Sturtevant and Abigail Groves (bef. 1803, either Madison (Chenango) or Cortland (Onandaga) Co., NY) James Sturtevant and Ann Leach (1769, Plymouth co., Province of MA Bay) What I need most are birth and/or baptism records for James Sturtevant (b. 6 Aug 1777, MA) and Abigail Groves (10 Sep 1777, MA?) or some such document that has their names and their parents' names on it (James Sturtevant and Ann Leach, and Retire Groves and Abigail King) and the same for Ornan Sturtevant (24 June 1806, Madison) and Artimicia Stebbins (20 Sep 1806, Hubbardsville ?) (Harvey Stebbins and Axseph Pease, both of whom are buried at the Sweet Farm Cemetery in Madison). A copy of a letter written in 1939 by James Watts Sturtevant says that James and Abigail were married in Cortland, which I don't think would been a village or town with that name before 1803. I don't know for certain when they were married, but their first child, Thomas, was born in 1803. I found an on-line Cortland county biography for their Sangerfield-born sixth child, James Watts Sturtevant (the great-uncle of my great-great-grandfather James Watts Sturtevant) that was published in 1885 by H.P. Smith, D. Mason & Co. publishers of Syracuse, NY. His siblings and their father are listed in the entry, so that helps a wee bit (also, brothers John H. and Zebina appear in a history of Cortland county), but I need evidence from an earlier source that connects Ornan with his 9 siblings and their parents James and Abigail. Ornan and Artimicia were married on 19 Feb 1831, but I don't know where their marriage took place. A death record or obituary for James and Abigail (Groves) Sturtevant would also be extremely helpful. She died on 5 August 1834 and he died on 15 Aug 1839. They both died in in Hubbardsville, Madison County and were buried in the Hubbardsville Cemetery (what is the name of that cemetery now?). Microfilm of the Hamilton Currier and the Hamilton Sentinal may be available through Colgate University for 1834, and the Hamilton Citizen, Hamilton Eagle, and Hamilton Palladium all were publishing in 1839, so I'm hoping to turn up some form of obituary for them in a newspaper or a church document. At that point in time I think the family belonged to a Baptist church. If anyone can provide contact information for a church or historical society that offers assistance on genealogical searches in the Hubbardsville area I'd greatly appreciate it. Alvin Sturtevant's 28 Nov 1860 marriage to Adelia Luzette Curtis (b. 9 June 1836 to Allen Curtis and Arabella L. Richardson) was recorded in the Delhi Republican, a paper he owned in Delaware co., on 8 Dec 1860, his mother's obituary appears to have been in the Delhi Gazette in the weeks following her death in Michigan on 16 Sep 1866 (Artimicia was buried near her parents at the Sweet Farm Cemetery), and his father's second marriage to a Mrs. Jane Gage of Lawrence, Michigan was recorded in the Delhi Republican on 17 July 1869. Alvin's short history is mentioned in the Delhi chapter in "The History of Delaware County; 1797-1880" by W.W. Munsell, and I wonder if the Republican may have printed an obituary for him after his death on 25 May 1835 in Michigan or one for his father Ornan after his death on 23 Dec 1878. Both Alvin and Adelia were buried in the Town Cemetery in Madison. I don't have copies of any of the above documents. Can anyone offer me advice on who to contact to obtain copies? I'm hoping to prove the James Chilton line first because that is the Mayflower line that James Watts writes about the most in his letter, and my mother also often told my brother, sister and me about Mary Chilton when we were children. I have, where available, birth, marriage and death certificates from me back to Alvin Sturtevant, as well as US Federal Census images that put the family members together back to Ornan Sturtevant's 1850 household. I also have a copy of the census image for Ornan in 1840 and one for his father James in 1830 (all three images are for Hamilton, Madison Co.) If anyone is working on the same line and needs copies of things I've collected, please let me know and I'll send you either digital or paper copies. I'm grateful for assistance or advice offered. All the best, Loren
