Dear Peggy, Dorothy and Pat: Peggy and Dorothy, you could not compose any greater encomiums to fultonhistory.com than I can. You are no more grateful to Tom Tryniski than I am. I have been sitting here for the past month, copying by hand some of the articles about HITEMAN and printing out others, all of which I then type into a Word document. I now have about 100 pages typed up. Thee is a difference between complaining and seeking help so one can use a source better, and that is what I was doing, seeking the guidance of anyone who has used the site and figured out the answers to my questions. Anyone who has used it a lot for one name, as for instance, 1588 articles for HITEMAN, would run into what I did. I think I will now ask Mr.Tryniski. I had hoped to spare him the question because I have already asked him a few. Pat, you may be right about the indexing. I hadn't thought of that. I had thought that the articles kept the position they had when they were added, which no doubt shows how simple I am computerly speaking--and my age, which is 78. When we were young and working out in the world, we stacked paper up, one by one, and we could see what we were doing. Not so with computers. I have thought that there are as many repetitions of a page as there are items on it that are indexed. That is the only explanation of the repetitions that I have come up with so far. One needs to understand these things in order to use the site to its fullest. Thanks for answering my question in the spirit in which it was asked, Pat. I have found that the easiest way to use the fultonhistory.com site, is to type a whole name, i.e. "joe palooka" of just the last name "palooka". Yes, I put them in quotes. I grant you that you will find duplicates, even triplicates, and certain articles, if they were really news-worthy, might be in many different newspapers, sometimes maybe a thousand miles from where the even actually took place. I had to ask Mr. Tryinski once how to find something (I'm not very good at finding things by boolean searching) and he helped immediately. At my age I need to study how to do that type of searching, but "quotes" work wonderfully well--even checking different spellings. One member of my husband's family has the last name spelled "Dailey", "Daley", and guess whatt -- it is "Daly". I can't tell you how many years it took me to find that, but the lady died in Buffalo, the obituary that cinched the family ties was in the Clyde paper, and they had lived most of their married life in Cleveland--but are buried in the Weedsport Cemetery. Life is a walk in the park--have fun along the way.
