John Button (b. 1749 d. 1841) and Anna McCoon (or Coon)( b. Mar 15, 1746 d. abt 1843) They were early settlers of Brookfield, Madison Co., New York. Settling in 1794 [TT], and living there for the remainder of their long lives. Information on their children is not particularly clear. The following summarizes what I have seen. However, original source information is very limited. Any information to support or correct information below is sought. Notations in brackets are my source codes, which are defined at the end. To complicate matters it appears that John Button b. 1756 m. Anna Palmer also lived in Brookfield for some time (info from a descendant of this John and Anna), so it may be difficult to distinguish between children of John and Anna (McCoon) Button and those of John and Anna (Palmer) Button. Children of John Button (b. 1749 d. 1841) and Anna McCoon (or Coon) ( b. Mar 15, 1746 d. abt 1843): Pretty Solid 1) John Hancock b. 1777 [BFA, TT] d. abt 1817 [TT] m. Polly Welch, Esther Bentley [TT] In addition, TT says that John Hancock was the second son and seventh child. While it seems questionable whether it is possible without births of multiples to have had so many children by 1777, if true, then we need to account for 5 older daughters and one older son. Probable 2) Nancy Button b. 1774 [BFA, PH] m. 1791 Lawton Palmer, Jr. [PH] 3) Ross b. 1780 m. Mary Polly Palmer [PH] 4) Abigail b. 9 Mar 1785 m. 31 Mar 1805 Plainfield, NY to Thomas Draper Spicer. She died 7 Mar 1863 in Houndsville, Jefferson Co., New York [BFA] 5) Elias b. 8 Sept 1790, d. 1850 [BFA] 6) Joseph E. b. 1775-1780 [based on 1820 & 1830 US Census, living next door to father], note BFA has birth date too late (see #8). Joseph E. most likely b. 1775-1776 and is the unnamed older brother of John (b. 1777) mentioned in TT 7) Betsey Button b. 11/21/1770 in RI d. 3/19/1852 in Button Falls, NY m. Charles Welch, Jr., brother of Polly Welch (see #1) [Terrys] Others more questionable: 8) Joseph Button b. 6 Aug 1785 d. 1863 [BFA] see #6 above 9) George Button [BFA] b. abt 1779 [ST] see #10 10) George Ross Button b. abt 1801 [BFA] note 9, 10, and 3 might be same person if his full name was George Ross and this birth date is off. 11) Amy Button, b. 1774-1775 [PH has an Amy Button, parents unknown who marries Nathan Wells Brown of Plainfield. Their daughter marries son of couple #2.] Amy and Nathan are buried in the Baldwin Farm Cemetery (http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ny/madison/cemeteries/brookfld.txt ). However, author of PH believed the cemetery b. date for Nathan was wrong. Likewise, if these are the Nathan W. Brown of Plainfield, as stated in PH, then cemetery transcription birth date for Amy is also inconsistent w/ censuses. Birth date of 1774-1775 is based on 1810 and 1820 US Censuses. I placed Amy in this family because TT states that Deiadamia marries at the home of her Aunt, “the Widow Brown.” The Nathan Brown home in Plainfield is near the home of John Henry Button. And both Nathan and John Henry die before the 1820 Census and Deiadamia’s wedding in 1822. TT also states that her brother was adopted by an unnamed aunt. A young man of correct age appears in Amy’s 1820 census household (who wasn’t in 1810 household). Of course, this might simply be a hired hand. Also see #12. 12) Amy Button, b. 6 Aug 1797, died 1881, married Mr. Brown [BFA] Thus BFA thinks that there was an Amy that married Mr. Brown, but the dates seem unlikely. Mother Anna would have been abt 51 at this Amy’s birth. My Amy above seems more likely, and previously known to be the “Widow Brown.” 13) Thankful Button, married Alonzo Kellog [BFA] b. 1782 [ST] 14) Betsey Button (possible Bethian Laura) b. 17 May 1804 [BFA] Mother Anna would have been 58 at birth (See #7 and #20) 15) Susan Button (may have been daughter-in-law) married Carpenter [BFA] 16) Jemima, married Stephen Carpenter [BFA] 17) Eunice Button, b. 1778 d. 1866, married Wait Randell [BMB-W,C] 18) Hannah Button from RI married James Weeden, Sr. (James b. 1760, d. 1860) [BMB-W] 19) Rhoda Button [BMB-W] 20) Betsey Button b. 7-11-1788 d. 5/7/1878 m. Benjamin Odell [BMB-W,C] age more reasonable than #14.
