    1. [NYMADISO] organizational problem help please
    2. Joan Meddaugh
    3. Hi list, I have an organizational problem that I need help solving. First, of all let me tell you that I am one of those three-ring notebook types that likes to sit in a nice comfortable chair and browse through their genealogy rather than sit at a computer and do it. Second, I also enjoy printing other individuals work and comparing them to others and myself. Third, I prefer to color code the families. For example my fathers side the Beebe's are white notebooks while my mother's side is blue. My husbands side is black and gray, red. Now with that said here is the situation. Each generation has their own note book. That I am directly related to. Which by the way is either 13 or 14, I forget. I use white notebooks for my Beebe line my fathers side and blue/green for my mother's side For example In notebook # 1 I go all the way back to 1585 with Thomas Beebe. In that notebook is included is wife/wives, and all their children. As well as a list of all the people that have researched that particular line. Note book # 2 follows with Thomas son and family and all the people that have researched that particular line. This continues with the same process all the way up to me Joan Beebe. Now I don't have a problem with the Beebe line as to how to organize them because they are all males all the way to my father C. Arthur. Sure I have aunts and uncles but I know how to organize them and which shelf to put them on. them. But I do have when I merge my mothers side the Schwartz And again when I married my husband Larry Meddaugh. His family is gray's for Jackson, his grandmother, red for Jennings his other grandmother, Black for his grandpa Meddaugh and a different color for his grandma Jennings 1st and second husbands. Are you confused yet? white ( surname Beebe) and black surname Meddaugh get married and the notebook color becomes black with white stripes meaning Beebe and Meddaugh have become one. Our childrens notebooks are all black because their surname is Meddaugh ( which was Larry's side) But where do I place my husband's parents and grandparents on both side of his family? Do I do it like this? After my direct line is all organized and I am listed as the last white notebook, then do I put Larry's and my union after that or do I start with his father's side the Meddaugh's, that go all the way back to `1400's ,Jacksons,) Then on his mother's side Jennings, Green, Dimon. then our JOINT family? or what? See I told you I was confused and I be you guys are too. Hope you can help. I have a total of 200 + notebooks. Some have pictures while others have straight genealogy, others have histories of the various towns, a list of cemeteries, articles, census, military, other towns in Tioga Co. Rail Roads, farming, and a whole lot more. Luckily I don't have a problem organizing them. Thanks for your help a very confused Joan Beebe, Meddaugh ____________________________________________________________ Notre Dame Certificates 100% Online Programs in Negotiation Leadership and Mgmt. 3. Hi, Joan, I had the same problems. Do our kids go in my wife's family notebook or mine/ That is a simplified sample of what I mean. I never found a solution. Some persons should have been in two or more notebooks and as soon as a new detail of information is discovered--- how many times do I have to write it!!! I should say, I did find a solution ! I went to the computer. That is what a computer does best. It does the mechanical work so that you don't have to. It puts all the names and info in as many places as necessary with very little work on my part. So, I just use my old notebook records to paste in newspaper clippings for the main family lines, obits, etc. even though I have that info on the computer. If you have room enough in your house, you can keep some sort of paper records, I suppose. I started out saying I would have a page in the notebooks for each indivdual--But............. 3. Hi Joan, I read, with great interest, your organizational process. I sure did get confused with the colors yet at the same time I find the color coding a useful tool for quick reference. The genealogy records that were passed on to me uses a numbering system that is similar to my computers genealogy software. It categorizes by last name in alphabetical order and then the index # at the end. Seems to me it might work well as a table of contents or index to your notebooks. It looks like this: DEMAY Bradley Steven (1983 - ) (4) 1.5.2.2 Caitlin (1985 - ) (4) 1.5.2.1 Steven Robert (1954 - ) spouse of (3) 1.5.2 FERGUSON Kathryn (1952 - ) spouse of (3) 1.5.1 HALL Hallie Mae (1898 - ) spouse of (1) 1 LUTERAN Ronald (1955 - ) spouse of (3) 1.5.4 ORR Daniel Watson (1898 - 1979) (1) 1 TOBIA Joseph (1957 - ) spouse of (3) 1.5.3 Nam Jong Kwon/Matthew Joseph (1991 - ) (4) 1.5.3.2 Sang Hee Jeon/Christine Marie (1987 - ) (4) 1.5.3.1 TORNATORE Barbara (1932 - ) (2) 1.5 Bethany (4) 1.5.1.1 Carol (1955 - ) (3) 1.5.2 Elisa (1959 - ) (3) 1.5.3 Elizabeth Jane (1959 - ) (3) 1.5.4 Kimberly (1984 - ) (4) 1.5.1.2 Marcus (1987 - ) (4) 1.5.1.3 Michael Alexander (1926 - ) spouse of (2) 1.5 Paul (1952 - ) (3) 1.5.1 On Aug 22, 2010, at 9:34 AM, cepage1 wrote: > Hi, Joan, > I had the same problems.
