Herma Thanks. I suspect that the John Hall you found was white but this could be wrong. Am thinking that the 101st NY Infantry was a white regiment. However, there were 2 black soldiers from Peterboro in the 22nd NY Cavalry, so I guess I should never say never. I'll keep this information just in case. I have a CD from Americasarchive.com of the 1890 census from Oswego County, and it is all military. Have not found John Hall yet but that does not mean he isn't in there. Footnote does not have the 26th Regt. on their pages yet--they have from 22-25 on line.
