_Oneida, New York Directories, 1887-88, 1890_ (http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=5195&enc=1) about Henry Kopke Name: Henry Kopke City: Oneida State: NY Occupation: cigarmaker Location 2: 42 Sherman
Thank you for the reply! That record is a bit of a problem, and in actuality, isn't very clear. A few years ago I had a go around with the library in Oneida, and they couldn't locate it. When I sent him a copy of the ancestry record, he eventually found the record filed in another area. It was printed by the Globe company. The one for 1890 was by the Dillon company, and he was unable to find that one. The info on the globe issue was collected in 1886, and the one for the Dillon company was collected in 1889. All I can say for sure is that since my father was born in 1888, and his mother could have been left in Albany while daddy worked in Oneida, and my dad was born in Albany (which he always thought) or she moved to Oneida with her daughter, and he was born in Oneida. Someone, I think from this list found them by Albany using a wild card search under the spelling of Kophe in an 1886 Albany directory. Henry Sr.'s papers of intent (citizenship) were taken out in Albany too in September of 1886. I still can't be perfectly sure where Mama was in 1888! Where ever she was, he was. In Albany, they lived on Alexander street. I wrote to the nearest Lutheran church there, and they couldn't find a record, but referred me to another Lutheran church nearby. They never answered my letter. I haven't asked Albany records to check under the Kophe spelling yet, I was still hoping to find some indication that they were actually living in Oneida. The Dillon directory was not available when I wrote to the library, at least they said they couldn't find it. I would like to narrow it further before trying to bore in. I have been searching for this since before 1960, and I am closer that I have ever been. Certainly, I am far closer than my mother ever was able to get, but no cigar. Henry Sr. was a cigar maker! I just don't buy that they never registered the birth of their son especially with what I have since found out about the family. They have been registered in Jork Germany going back to the 1300's. It doesn't fit. I have a copy of the Globe record, but they were unable to find a copy of the Dillon Record. 1888 data would have been collected in 1887. The library in Oneida was unable to find the Dillon directory of 1890. Dillon and Globe were two different publishers.
