It is indeed a sad state of affairs. I know there is a tremendous expense attached to the census taking but perhaps if they spent less money advertising what is clearly going to take place they might have had more room for another question or two. Of course we live in such a litigious society someone is probably afraid of a lawsuit if a census taker asked a personal questi on I do volunteer Indexing (transcription) for the Family Search site and it has been so interesting to me. I should say tho that prior to the 1850 census there was not much information other than the heads of the households name and the number of people living in his household. I am very anxious to see the 1940 census when they become available probably after the first of the year or hopefully sometime this year. I should be on that one!! Dorothy
I made an inquiry to Ancestry.com as to when the 1940 census would be available. This is their response: "The US Government releases the Census records 72 years after they are recorded. The 1940 Census is set to be released in 2012.
