Donna Harmon Landgraff in his book on Oneida Lake states that the Islands were so called after a Frenchman who lived on the Island 1791-93 by the name of Count St Hilary who fled France with his family during the "Reign of Terror". No mention of a prior name by Indians but if such is true it no doubt would be an Indian language name. Oneida Lake was called White Waters by the Indians.
