    3. Hi Donna You did not state what year or years you are seeking records for in North Dakota. I assume you are seeking info on a former Madison County family who migrated to North Dakota. No Dakotat was first formed in 3/1861 as part of the Territory of Dakota and in 11/1889 divided into North and South Dakota. Prior to that time there was very little white settlement in the area and prior to 1861 it was inclued in part of Minnesota and Nebraska Territories. I was looking for info on an Ancestor who personal handwritten records indicated they were in Minnesota, but they actually settled in what was later the Dakota Territory in the 1850's (prior to its being a Territory) after migrated westward from Canada and NYS. It was difficult to research them and the information I got was limited. However I did obtain info later on their decendants ( the early info being church records). I also sent several Snail Mail letters to various church archives and received some helpful information and burials. You also might want to contact the State Historical Society as they have Early Newspapers on Microfilm that you can obtain through the interlibrary loan. I got some information (not a lot) but it was well worth the investment. A couple years ago I requested Vitals from North Dakota and had to prove my identity in order to obtain them. I believe I sent a copy of my Drivers License for both a Birth Cert. and several Death Cert.. They were not certified and I was obtaining them on my G Grandparents and it was all I ws allowed.. The cost was reasonable.. I also obtained some Land Record information by going over Microfilms that I ordered through the LDS (Mormon) Center near me. One of these days I have to get back into my N Dakota line and do some in depth research myself.. Good Luck Pat R
