Hi folks, it's been a while since I've posted. I've been working seeking to find different housing for my parents, had another round with the doctor and hideous medication for a sinus infection. Still at this time of year, I am thankful for many things. I have been blessed beyond measure being the father of our daughter whom we adopted in March, 2008. Tian turns 10 in just a few days. I've tried to be subtle about this but few seemed to grasp what I was saying, so here it is in plain English: This Thanksgiving Day, I am thankful that some time early next year, we'll be adding a son to our family. He will be 8 in January and we are excited to welcome him home from Taiwan. http://home.highertech.net/~tstowell/yu-hsuan.htm We got to meet him via Skype a couple of weeks ago and will visit with him again in early December. I captured about 4 minutes of video from the first call. He speaks no English. He speaks the same language our daughter did, but she's lost most of that. Thus in a roundabout way, another branch is grafted into our tree, whose heritage will now by proxy trace back into central New York state. May you find Thanksgiving a time of gathering, a time of remembering and a time of thankfulness for the many blessings in your life today. Tim Stowell Chattanooga
Congratulations Tim! I've been away a great deal for the past six weeks and have a lot of back-logged messages that I'm still reading through. Decided to start with most current and work back. Mary and Patty - congratulations to each of you too on restored health. Being a 10 year cancer survivor is great. And organ donation is an incredible blessing. Sharon - you are in my prayers for all you've been through and will go through. It is a blessing that they found this cancer. My stepfather was a 35 year survivor of very advanced cancer when the diagnosis was made. He often went to meet with people in the hospital after they came out of surgery to encourage them not to give up or give in. He always believed that positive attitude matters a lot in how your body responds to the treatments. Thanksgiving Day is now 30 minutes old out here. I'm visiting family in Nevada. I am so thankful for this list and every one of you who participate. It is by far the richest list that I subscribe to...rich in friendship and support, rich in memories shared, and rich in assistance given. It's difficult to tell from reading the message threads that we actually are far-flung, not only across this country but other countries and continents as well. Thank you all for sharing so much of yourselves with us. It is deeply appreciated and treasured. That is good news, Mary. I'm happy for you. I agree with your message. People can also register to be bone marrow donors for transplants for leukemia patients. That is a donation that does not have to wait until after the donor's death in order to save someone's life. And of course, we can become blood donors through the Red Cross--another valuable gift for those who receive it. We are lucky to be living in a century where this level of healthcare is available. Reading through personal papers of some ancestors, it is very clear that their healthcare options were often poor (by our present standards) at best. Dear Sharon, Larry and I were truly saddened to hear that you have been having health problems again. You certainly don't need that. We are trusting in the Lord that he will be with you during these difficult days ahead and that he will constantly be with you during the good and the bad times. Here's praying that you will have better days ahead. Love Joan and Larry ____________________________________________________________ Manufacturer-Direct Hardwood Floors Never pay retail again. Sharon My best wishes for better days ahead and take your time......... health is so important. I'll keep you in my prayers. Pat J.
Donna, I am sending this to the last known e-mail address that I have for you ( 2003) and to the Madison list in hopes that you will get this. While going through my old e-mails that I printed out I came on yours and noticed that you had the name Isaac Nash and his wife Amy Hall listed. Recently, I came across the surname of Nash listed in the Brookfield Courier in connection with the Beebe family. Basically is said that relatives of May A. Beebe ( her mother was Olive Damon and her father was Truman Payne of W. Eaton) visited relatives George Nash of Brookfield. Not sure if this was on my father's side the Beebe line or the Payne/Damon line. You might want to check this out to see if there is any connection. I do know that there are Burdick's that are connected to our family some place along the line. It might even be the Hills/ Clarke/ Maxon side which is the wife of my great grandfather Ellen Amelia Hills Beebe wife of Hiram J. Beebe. Hi list, I need some help sorting out my Cyrus Beebe's 1. I know that my Cyrus was at time married to Rhody Chesebro. She died before he did but don't know when or where they are buried. Think it in Brookfield not sure. 2. He is reported to have re-married to her sister Phoebe a widow who was married to a Palmer. I don't know when they married or when she/he died and where they are buried. 3. My other Cyrus was married to a Maria, her sister was Mrs. Ann Remmick and they lived in the Brookfield area I think. This Cyrus was the son of the above Cyrus and my great grand uncle or something like that. I believe that Cyrus and Maria at one time lived in Poolville and Hamilton. They had a daughter Alice they adopted and she died before her mother but after her father. 4. I found a marriage announcement for a Cyrus Beebe Sr. who was in his late 70's closer to 80 to be more precise who married a Phoebe Crandell. Was this Phoebe Carndell also the Phoebe Palmer that had been a former sister-in-law to Cyrus Beebe and sister to his first wife Rhody Chesebro? This is very confusing. Can anyone help me unravel these Cyrus and help me figure out who was married to who and when as well as where they are buried? These are the last two Cyrus's in my line that I need to unravel as to who was married to who. The Brookfield Courier talks about a lot of Cyrus's but for the life of me I can't figure out which Cyrus belongs to me. I do know that when a Cyrus Beebe died that his will was contested by his grandnephew my grandfather Will L. Beebe of Candor formerly of Earlville and Brookfield. Here is a quick rundown of my Beebe line. I am starting here just to shorten the line. But I can go back further if needed. 1. Zadock Beebe Jr. b about 1772 give or take a few years. His wives were Ann Meade and Lucy Berry. He had a son name Cyrus. . This Cyrus was first married to Rhody Chesebro daughter of Harris and I think Catherine Chesebro. Later to her sister Phoebe Chesebro Palmer. Rhody and Cyrus Sr. had children Cyrus Jr. who married Maria and adopted one child Alice who died about age 16. She is buried with her parents. Her father Cyrus Jr. predeceased her. and her mother died later). A daughter Lucinda who I think married a Joseph Blanding Cyrus and Rhody had 3 children that included Judson who married Susan Blanding. Judson and Susan had my great grandfather Hiram Judson Beebe who married Ellen Amelia Hills of Brookfield, NY. They had 3 children Will. L. Beebe My grandfather, who married Mary A. Payne of W. Eaton. Winifred Lela Beebe who married George Smith, and James Beebe Sr. who married Josie Detlor. Will and May had 2 children Sue and Cyrus Arthur, my dad, who went by Arthur, or Art, Cy or Stub. and only Cyrus Arthur if my mom or his parents were mad at him. I sure would appreciate any help someone could give me especially with the dates or copies of birth and death certificates and a picture of the grave stone. Happy Thanksgiving. A while back I came across a little article that stated the following in the Brookfield Courier. "Mrs. Spooner and daughter of Sherburne are visiting her parents Rev. and Mrs HN Van Dusen." Does this ring a bell with anyone? And are these particular Spooners connected with Frank Spooner one of the owners of the Brookfield Courier. I also remember reading in my grandfather's paper The Candor Courier in the late 1940's around 1949- 1950 That a Mr. and Mrs. McFarline of Candor, NY were visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Spooner of Brookfield. Just wondering if there might be a connection to my Spooner's Frank and his parents Fanny and Hank Spooner of Brookfield. Ya never know. Hi Laurence, I've been researching about wigs on a few sites - Wikipedia.com; Ask.com; Answer.com; UPI.com; et al. In a book called Legal Habits: A Brief Sartorial History of Wig, Robe and Gown by Thomas Woodcock, the Introduction says: "This account puts wigs in their historical context and shows how they were originally adopted as an item of fashion but retained by the Bar and Judiciary after they ceased to be fashionable. The wearing of wigs makes the administration of justice impersonal and with gowns contributes to uniformity of dress in court proceedings, which helps to emphasize the formal gravity and dignity of justice." The book is published by Ede and Ravenscroft, suppliers of wigs and robes to the British judges and barristers for centuries. The tradition in England began in medieval times. On the British government's website for their courts at [1]http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/about_judiciary/court_dress/examples/index.ht m , it says: "The horsehair wigs and colourful robes worn by judges can be traced back to medieval times. And although theyre now a tradition, both robe and wig started out as essential fashionable attire for polite society. Judicial attire has changed over the years for example, shoulder-length wigs are now only worn on ceremonial occasions and judges hearing family cases in private tend not to wear robes in order to keep the atmosphere more informal." [...] "Strange as it might seem now, when judges first started wearing robes and wigs they probably wouldnt have stood out on the street. The current costume of a High Court judge, for example a long robe, a full hood with a cowl covering the shoulders and a mantle (or cloak) was more or less established by the time of Edward III (1327-77) and was based on the correct dress for attending the royal court. The material for these robes was originally given to judges as a grant from the Crown, and included ermine and taffeta or silk. The colours were violet for winter and green in summer, with scarlet for best, but the last mention of green robes dates back to 1534. In 1635 the definitive guide to court dress was published in the Judges Rules. But this didnt introduce new costumes; it just set out what existing robes should be worn, and when. So after 1635, the correctly-dressed judge would have worn a black robe faced with miniver (a light-coloured fur) in winter, and violet or scarlet robes, faced with shot-pink taffeta, in summer. A black girdle, or cincture, was worn with all robes." You can read more of this history at [2]http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/about_judiciary/court_dress/history/index.htm . As of last October (2008), the wig and robes have been eliminated in most of Britain's courts according to a story on UPI.com. Now they are only worn in their criminal courts and by their Supreme Appeals Court. Parliament also abandoned their wigs back in the 1990's. Regarding their use in colonial America, I haven't found much but basically, it was British influence. Many colonials in this country came from Britain or British heritage and sometimes traveled back to England for business or family visits. They sometimes had to petition business matters and debts through the courts of the Monarchy, as William Penn did. And there were many British officials residing in the colonies, in His Majesty's Service. They brought the tradition of wigs with them to convey an aura of power and position. Wigs also were worn by balding men for vanity. The Brits' judicial wigs are made of horsehair. I haven't discovered what American wigs were made of in that era, but horsehair is likely. From old paintings of colonial days that I've seen, it seems that wig-wearing in America disappeared around the time of the Revolutionary War, perhaps a manifestation of the rejection of British control over our newly-minted country. The Tories were sent packing back to Britain and took their wigs with them. Tink At 04:09 PM 11/2/09, you wrote: But I do have a question. Why did our early American men wear wigs? Yes, I know it was the fashion in England, but where did the tradition come from and when did it stop?
