3. I was going to mention what Chas has said here. I think the district schools were known by various names in the towns. For example, District #11 in Smithfield, which later became District #5, was called by the name of the area where it was located--Pleasant Valley. Then there were such places as Bliss Corners, Mile Strip school, etc., etc. Donna ----- Original Message ----- From: "cepage1" <cepage1@verizon.net> To: <nymadiso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2010 9:34 AM Subject: [NYMADISO] grade schools >I believe the 1875 Atlas shows school district numbers, but at that time it >was Town of Lenox. 3. I believe the 1875 Atlas shows school district numbers, but at that time it was Town of Lenox. At that time Lenox Furnace school was in dist # 7. Clockville was # 6. Merrillesville was # 16, if I read them right. I wonder what changes would be made when it became the town of Lincoln. But for common identifyfication there were called by people in both towns by the location names.. On my web site I describe the school and give my kid's experiences at Lenox Furnace School. Chas

3. Patty I agree with Jim that the schools were usually identified by numbers. When Mary Messere was County Historian, she found old records of school districts for the different towns and she had them organized in boxes. I looked through the Smithfield box and found reports that were submitted for the Smithfield school districts. These reports went way back into the 1800s and continued into at least the 1930s. THERE WERE NO NAMES OF STUDENTS IN THESE REPORTS, but there seemed to be reports for the various numbered districts and the names of the teachers and other stats. Maybe there's a box for Lincoln also. I would suggest that you contact Kevin Orr, Records Management Coordinator at Wampsville. Maybe he would be willing to look. His e-mail is kevin.orr@co.madison.ny.us Donna B. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patty" <myneself@gmail.com> To: <nymadiso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 04, 2010 1:48 PM Subject: [NYMADISO] Grade Schools > Would anyone know the name/names of grade schools in Lincoln Township, > Madison county in the early 1900's? > Patty > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NYMADISO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > > E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) > Database version: 6.14050 > http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/ E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) Database version: 6.14050 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/

2. As many of the grade schools in the early 1900s were one room schools, they were often identified by a number. If anyone has a web site for old Madison County/Township maps, I'll bet the locations can be found. -- Jim In a message dated 1/4/2010 10:50:12 A.M. 3. Patty, In the town of Lincoln, I know of some grade schools, maybe not all. There were Lenox Furnace, Merrillsville, Clockville. That is all comes to mind. There were more just over the border is other townships, but that's is all I think of, right now, for Lincoln. Maybe there were others. 1. Re: [NYMADISO] GOFF
2. Dear Sharon: I knew a Goff family who lived in West Winfield, Herkimer Co., NY, during the 1940s. Mr. Goff was principal of the West Winfield Central School. His first name was Howard. His wife's name was Anne, and they had two children, Leslie, a girl, and Terry, a boy. Leslie was my best friend for a while and we were in the same class so she must have been born in 1930 as was I. Terry was a couple of yeas younger than Leslie. I don't know how many years Mr. Goff was principal of the WW school. He may have come in the late 1930s and stayed there until he retired. In fact, he retired to Unadilla Forks so that probably means he was principal all those years. He must have been born during the first decade of the 20th century. 1. [NYMADISO] Recommended Article By Charles Page: City Slicker: Getting Back to Basics
2. Charles Page
3. Hi Madison County List, Your friend, Charles Page, has recommended this article entitled 'City Slicker: Getting Back to Basics' to you. Here is his/her remarks: She apparently moved to Madison County and will tell more in future columns City Slicker: Getting Back to Basics Posted By martha On December 31, 2009 (8:00 am) In Agriculture, Art & Culture, Front Page, Fun & Recreation, Opinion-Editorial By Linda J. Haley Online definitions of a “city slicker” differ: someone who lives and works in a city, one accustomed to a city or urban lifestyle or unsuited to life in the country, or a city-dweller regarded by rural people as a smooth, tricky person. Well, I do live, work and am accustomed to urban life, but am far from smooth or tricky. My reason for choosing the column title was a reference to the 1991 comedy of the same name starring Billy Crystal as “Mitch,” a man who has just turned 39 years old, and is thick in the middle of a midlife crisis. I, too, experienced a midlife crisis of sorts upon turning 39, and much like Mitch set off to discover what would bring me happiness. A therapist friend asked me, “When was the last time you were really happy? In the moment, not a care in the world, and fully enjoying yourself?” It took some thought and a serious amount of reflection – I recommend it to everyone who isn’t where they thought they’d be or is just plain unhappy. It’s a hugely revealing exercise to say the least! Where did my search take me? Back to my childhood friend Angie Martinez’s barn when I was 14 years old and helping her groom her horse, Tigger, for yet another horse show. Her mom, whom I adored, whisked us out to this magical place of fly spray, brushes, flax oil, and that unique warm and earthy smell of horses. Huge animals, with eyes the size of cue balls that kindly shared their space, patiently put up with young girls fussing over them and braiding pretty ribbons into their manes. I was completely enamored and terrified at the same time, and Angie was unaffected. To a country girl, it was no big deal, but to me? Utopia. Alas, it was short-lived. Angie’s parents sold their house and moved away a short year later, and that was my last exposure to equine paradise. Twenty-five years later, not knowing if I was nuts or had a moment of clarity, I began my journey to my happy place by getting back to horses. This journey helped me to discover way more than I ever knew about myself and what really makes me happy. That’s what this column will be: a sharing of my experiences as this city slicker stumbles her way around the foreign lands of rural life. It’s about horses, small towns, the truly great outdoors, fantastic people and places and the endless lessons along the way – all of which are found in abundance in Madison County. I look forward to sharing the people, places and lessons I find with Madison County Courier readers. Speaking of sharing, I would love reader input and invitations to experience more. The never-ending learning is the best part of this journey. I am interested in all things nature-based and back to the land: horses, homesteading, farming, ranching, green technology, outdoor activities, raising livestock, survival training, etc. It seems to me, everything old is new again, including me. 3. I am hoping to find my Goff line in the New Year. I recently seen a post from Goff's. There are several Goff DNA surname projects and though or "local" Goff lines daughtered out, I found a third cousin (perhaps at one remove) in the direct male line in ND and he recently did the DNA testing for us! We found that we connect to the Bristol, MA (now RI) Goff line! There were several unrelated Goff lines in the are and when I started research I though it was such an uncommon name it would be easy..lol. So my Samuel Goff b. 1795 who was b. in Washington Co., moved to Oxford in Chenango Co. some of his ch. were in Madison Co. and Samuel Goff settled til his death in Onondaga Co. I know there were other Goff's in Madison Co., including a M.D. and two of Samuel's sons were M.D.'s. One attended the academy in Madison Co. So lots of connections but no link. Hoping the new info on being descended from the Bristol MA/RI Goff's may help. I think there may be 2 generations "missing" to connect us into that line solid. Thanks for any help in advance. Sharon Goff Garrett
