I made an inquiry to Ancestry.com as to when the 1940 census would be available. This is their response: "The US Government releases the Census records 72 years after they are recorded. The 1940 Census is set to be released in 2012. It is indeed a sad state of affairs. I know there is a tremendous expense attached to the census taking but perhaps if they spent less money advertising what is clearly going to take place they might have had more room for another question or two. Of course we live in such a litigious society someone is probably afraid of a lawsuit if a census taker asked a personal questi on I do volunteer Indexing (transcription) for the Family Search site and it has been so interesting to me. I should say tho that prior to the 1850 census there was not much information other than the heads of the households name and the number of people living in his household. I am very anxious to see the 1940 census when they become available probably after the first of the year or hopefully sometime this year. I should be on that one!! Dorothy
I filled in my census report and was very disappointed about the lack of information that was required. How are the future generations going to find out any genealogical information? Mary Kay
Here is an AMEN to that!!!! Whenever I get mine, I'm going to fill mine out that way too. Great idea!! I am proud of that heritage - and I know the authors of this thing are not concerned. They just want those numbers so they can plan their political agenda.

Re the question about what ever happened to the papers in the basement of the Madison County offices, I was in the Madison County Clerk's office for about a week in May 2009 and there was a nice gentleman there working on processing some papers that had been found in the basement. It sounded like a long slow process, but they seemed determined to get through it all, and he certainly was working hard at it while I was there. Mary Hunt E-mail: muvsgenealogy@comcast.net
Rich, Sure , something came of it. Back Street Mary and volunteers sorted through all those boxes, stored, and labeled the contents by catagory. A great piece of work! There have been several articles in the on-line newspaper, Madison County Courier, about the findings of an individual researcher. Also, suggest you contact the County Historian for more info. email= historian@co.madison.ny.us Chas ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rich Holmes" <richholmes@richholmes.net> To: <nymadiso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 22, 2010 10:39 PM Subject: [NYMADISO] Papers in the basement? >A few years back there was something announced about some old papers found > in the basement of the Madison County courthouse. A few years back there was something announced about some old papers found in the basement of the Madison County courthouse. Did anything ever come of that? - Rich Holmes
I, too, would like to know if there has been anything done with those documents. --- On Mon, 2/22/10, Rich Holmes <richholmes@richholmes.net> wrote: From: Rich Holmes <richholmes@richholmes.net> Subject: [NYMADISO] Papers in the basement? Stop me if you've heard this one... I can trace my Holmes line back to Hiram HOLMES, who was born in Connecticut in 1804 and died in Poolville, Town of Hamilton, Madison County, New York in 1864. Unfortunately I've found next to nothing definite about Hiram's parents and siblings. Over the years, though, I've accumulated a lot of circumstantial evidence suggesting that parents father were Nathan HOLMES and Grace CHAPEL from Montville, Connecticut; that Nathan and Grace's other children included Jabez (b. 1795), Peter (ca. 1798), Eunice (ca. 1806), Henry (1809), Nathan (ca. 1811), and Hannah (ca. 1815), as well as perhaps three more girls; and that Nathan's father was Samuel HOLMES, born 1722 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. If that line is correct then it extends back to John HOLMES of Plymouth, birth place and date unknown but he was in Plymouth by the early 1630s. I consider the line probably correct but not proved. Supporting this are yDNA tests that indicate a fairly close relationship between descendants of Hiram and Peter and three other males who trace their line back to John of Plymouth, but through a different son. On the other hand the yDNA for the Hiram descendant is closer to that of those three males than to that of the Peter descendant, which is a little worrying. There appear to have been at least a couple of other Holmes families in Hamilton in the mid 19th century but no real evidence of a connection between them and Hiram and some evidence against it. Jabez lived most of his life near Poolville, but about 1865 moved to Chautauqua County, New York. He had two wives: Irene DIBBLE and Harriet SMITH. Peter moved to Wyoming County, New York, and later to Cattaraugus County, New York. His wife was Rachel STOWELL. Eunice married Joseph Francis EGGLESTON and move to Cortland, New York. Henry moved first to Verona, Oneida County, New York, and later to Saratoga County, New York; his wife was Louisa J. HODGES. The younger stayed in the Poolville area and married a woman named Ann. Hannah is somewhat speculative but may have been the wife of Edwin F. SMITH of Poolville. I'd be delighted to get any new information on any of these families and their descendants. It'd be especially great to find a male line descendant of Jabez or Henry (I'm pretty sure the younger Nathan has no living descendants) who'd be willing to do a yDNA test. - Rich Holmes
From: Rich Holmes <richholmes@richholmes.net> Date: Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 10:25 AM Subject: Surnames HOLMES, COLLINS, COOK, DUNN, BELDEN, YORK, HOAG, BROWN To: NYMadison list <NYMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> It's been quite some time since I last posted about my Madison county ancestors. These include: Clarence Edwin HOLMES, born South Hamilton, 1875. His parents were Jerome N. HOLMES, born Town of Hamilton, 1834, and Ruth Oliva COLLINS, born South Hamilton, 1833. Jerome's parents were Hiram HOLMES, born Connecticut, 1804, and Rhoda COOK, born Norwich, Chenango County, 1805. I will say more about the Holmes line in another post. The Cook line is fairly well known although I could use some more documentation and facts about Rhoda's parents. Oliva's parents were Solomon COLLINS, born Hopkinton, Rhode Island, 1796, and Anna DUNN, born Rhode Island, 1792. The Collins family has beeen well researched by others, but I have very little on the DUNN line. Clarence's wife was Mary Alice BELDEN, born West Brookfield, 1877. Her parents were Warren BELDEN and Florinda Esther YORK. Warren was born in Cortland, 1848, and his parents were Daniel Jerome BELDEN, born South New Berlin, Chenango, 1816, and Mary Gay HOAG, born Butternuts, Otsego, 1822. My information says Warren was adopted, however, and I have no information on his birth parents. I have some information on the Belden line back to the 1600s but it's rather sketchy and not well documented. The HOAG line is pretty well known. Florinda's parents were Lelen Collins YORK and Mary L. BROWN, both born in Brookfield (1815 and 1823 respectively) and their lines have been pretty well researched. If any of these surnames are of interest to you and you'd line to exchange information please get in touch. - Rich Holmes

we go to get our son! In less than 24 hours we depart on our trip to Taiwan. He is now 8 years old, having had his birthday on January 4th. His given name at birth is Yu-Hsuan (U-Swan). We'll be adding Samuel to this name. I'll go to work Thursday morning and our daughter will be at school to give my wife time to do last minute packing. Our daughter, 10, will be going with us. We arrive in Taiwan Saturday evening, Chattanooga time, after a multi hour layover in Seattle. In Taipei, we'll take the bullet train south to Tainan where the orphanage is. Looking for information about Paine Wait or any Wait descendants who can identify Paine's spouse and/or their ten children. He and others of the the family lived in Brookfield in the early part of the 1800s. Paine was 82 years of age in 1840 and is said to have lived to 105. Per Madison County history, Paine died at the home of a Mrs. Clark -- might she have been the wife or mother of Wait Clark, also an early resident of Madison County? I'm interested in any information anyone might have about the Jenkens Wait family.
