    3. Thank You, Tink...................... Your message is a good one that we should all try to follow. I see no harm in answering the questions. I got the short form, in fact I got TWO short forms. (Identical). I had to check to find out what to do. Answer was mail one back, throw the other out and to tell the census taker what happened when he or she came to contact me. I live in an apartment building, apparently the initial information gatherers figured there were 2 of us living in the one apartment. So they may figure they didn't get a response from #2 tenant. I consider this another mix up by the government. There isn't much information given on the individual themselves. Guess we'll have to instruct the person that takes over what we've gathered in genealogy to keep abreast of events. But that will be their duty and if they don't, they will have to dig just as we have. And that was what made it so interesting to us! Long live genealogy! Pat J. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tink Miller To: nymadiso@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2010 11:54 PM Subject: Re: [NYMADISO] NYMADISO Digest, Vol 5, Issue 35 I find it very humorous that some genealogists are contemplating not completing the census form. The fact is that due to the proliferation of public records throughout our society, almost anything anyone wants to know about us now is available, if not on the internet then through private investigators and companies who collect and sell information. They can buy information about each of us from dozens of sources. As we genealogists know, the individual census data that is collected is "locked up" for 72 years. The Census Bureau does not share any data about any individual with any other government agency, or in fact with anyone at all, until after the 72 years has passed. Please set your paranoia aside and complete the census. It has been mandated by federal law since the first census was completed in 1790. What wouldn't we give for earlier census records? The content of the 2010 census was negotiated a year ago between several federal agencies. The scope of data being collected is reduced from prior years to encourage people to respond. The census determines how much of your federal tax dollars come back to your community and how many seats your state has in the House of Representatives. Your community is estimated to lose $1800 per year for 10 years (ie. $18,000) for each person who is not reported on the census. What could your town do with $18,000? Here's to happy hunting and tumbling brick walls. I don't recall their asking for our ages, but I answered all their short form questions. 3. Hi For an answer regarding the Census you might want to look at this: http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/censusandstatistics/a/answersrequired.htm The Law states the following: TITLE 13 - CENSUS CHAPTER 7 - OFFENSES AND PENALTIES SUBCHAPTER II - OTHER PERSONS Sec. 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers (a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100. (b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500. 3. The first census that I had to fill out as an adult was in 1980. Most folks received a brief form, but it was announced that a small percentage would randomly receive a more detailed form to fill out. I happened to be one who received the detailed form. It asked all kinds of probing questions about anything you could imagine and took me a while to fill out completely. I recall that I had to spread filling it out over several sessions rather than at one shot in order to do it without totally losing my patience LOL. I was the only person in my circle who had received the long census form that year, even though it was quite publicized as being legit. I received a short form in 1990 and in 2000. Today I also received a short form in the mail for 2010. My Mom is not really into family tree research, but she has been quite impressed with the detail I have been able to find about our family tree in the older historic censuses. She was actually disappointed that this year's form didn't ask for some of the historically interesting details similar to what I've shown her on some of the older forms. 3. It truly seems as if the current trend is all about money, no concern for history. And this pattern is seeping into so many phases of our lives. Glad I'm living now, I like my memories. The future will have fewer memories I think. Pat J. as I am told - some persons will get a form with more questions on them- the extra info is used for economic reasons- and such- builders and or commercial look at the financial security of an area to decide where to place business - no names are shown on that part of the census records- they may ask about items one may own- such as boats -and such- car insurance- all these things help someone I guess- not everyone will recieve this type of form- not sure how they target certain areas- Peggy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Kay Mullen" <marykay@mullen.be> To: <nymadiso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 7:58 AM Subject: Re: [NYMADISO] NYMADISO Digest, Vol 5, Issue 32 >I filled in my census report and was very disappointed about the lack of >information that was required. 3. They plan to digitalize the pages. It's part of the reqirements NARA imposed on Census Bureau. The pages will still be retained and made public in 72 years. They are trying to reduce paper overload. 2. Thanks for the info. I had it in the back of my head that it was 70 years. What an odd number!
