Dick There are several stories of the early days of Frenchman Island and most are romantic stories (does not surprise me since they are French). The first story 1791-93 states the Count called himself Desvatines. Then the Duke French settler called the Castorland Company came (that group settled in Castorland Lewis County NY) and the Desvatines were ordered off the Island. At that point Mr Scriba was setting Rotterdam and the Desvatines removed to the new Rotterdam. In 1797 LaWhitte De Wardenous (wife and family) came and lived on the Frenchman Island and another romance story was made (those Romantic French). It is stated the the DeWardenous returned to France. Another tale by a Mr Bloomfield who visited the Island in 1793 states that it was a Frenchman who ran off with a nun from the convent that settled there. There appears to be no concrete documentation to clarify who the Desvatines were and a question of the possibility that the Desvatines and DeWardenous were one and the same is a possible. Were they of French noble or not is still a question.. I do remember at SU Library they have many additional rare books as you stated on Central New York including Oneida Lake. Maybe I should make another visit there when I'm down to my sons again. Makes me curious. I was actually doing research on the Oneida Settlement when I was at the Library (Probably the best resourse for their History) and just browing other local History. A great Library. . To Sandy, Dick Hillenbrand, and anyone else who cares: I found my source for Peter Smith's Eyes. Hurray! In a talk she gave on Feb. 18, 1937, Edith Hamilton White, the adopted daughter of Gerrit Smith Miller, mentioned that "the two islands in Oneida Lake near Brewerton were called "Peter Smith's Eyes" by the Indians. I imagine that Miss White was told this by Mr. Miller, who was the great-grandson of Peter Smith. Mr. Miller was still living in Feb. 1937 (he died the next month). Because of the probable source, I would give this some credence. Or, at least, it's what Mr. Miller was probably told by his family. The rare book room at Syracuse University's Arents Research Library, located on the top floor of the Bird Library building has a small collection of very rare books about Frenchman's Island and the very earliest publications on Oneida Lake inhabitants. It got its name from an early settler from France by the name of DesWattines, or something similar (from memory) and was mentioned in things about another Oneida Lake important historical personage, Francis Adrian VanderKamp. I remember reading somewhere many years ago that the DesWattines family was visited by the French nobility that came here to escape the French Revolution and they stopped there on their way up to Lake Ontario from where they were going to settle up in the Black River Valley of Jefferson county at Castorland. That was indeed a disaster and those that did not die the first winter reportedly came back down through and might have gone elsewhere to Europe or New York City. It is thought by some that DesWattines left the area about the same time. Please don't take any of the above as gospel as it is just off the top of my head from having read these things many years ago. It would be relatively easy to research if you are really interested. Donna Harmon Landgraff in his book on Oneida Lake states that the Islands were so called after a Frenchman who lived on the Island 1791-93 by the name of Count St Hilary who fled France with his family during the "Reign of Terror". No mention of a prior name by Indians but if such is true it no doubt would be an Indian language name. Oneida Lake was called White Waters by the Indians. Because my brain is so full of knowledge after collecting info for 80 some years, could some one please tell me if there is (was) another Island in Oneida Lake called DUTCHMAN's ISLAND? Or am I confusing it with the Dunham's? I've always heard it referred to as Dutchman. But maybe my data base is unplugged. Thanks for any clarification offered. Pat J
Oneida Lake has very few islands. The two largest islands are Frenchman's and Dunham's Island - located close together near the south shore in the west end of the lake, north of the Town of Cicero. They could be described as being located close to Brewerton. If you have a copy of Jack Henke's "Oneida Lake From thee Beach to Brewerton", you will find a sketch of the lake showing the islands on the inside cover. The lore surrounding Frenchman's Island has fascinated me for years. I've read a number of references to it, but have never run across the nickname "Peter Smith's Eyes. Guess the position and shape of the islands could lead to calling them eyes --- very sad or angry looking eyes! Dorothy Much of Cicero has built up - in fact where my apartment is - was swamp and pasture for a farm. It is the main discussion every time new housing tracts are established is the drainage problem. Man is taking over so much of nature. There is still a lot of swamp. Route 298 is usually closed in the spring due to flooding. And there are still plenty of mosquitoes. I feel sorry for the wild life, they are being pushed out of their natural habitat. Soon enough Cicero Swamp rattle snakes will be basking on some ones front steps! But I think Mother nature will hang on to a lot of her swamp regardless of the build up. Guess it's called progress. I hope I am not breaking any rules by sending it on but those islands looks so much like someone's eyes! The rest of the map is interesting also, as it shows the Cicero Swamp . I wonder how much of that is still swamp and how much has been drained over the years. Well something to look over and if you have Bridgeport,Cicero or Brewerton area family you might find their homes listed on this map. I found many of mine. Dorothy

I'm ashamed to say that I don't have a source. I may have read it in one of those old "retrospective" columns that were written in the late 19th/early 20th century. If it was a column by a gentleman named Dewitt C. Hadcock, I should have known better than to believe it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dick Hillenbrand" <nygenes@gmail.com> To: <nymadiso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 20, 2010 8:29 PM Subject: Re: [NYMADISO] Peter Smith's Eyes > Yes those two islands would be the ones, but where did you find a > reference > to the "tradition"? > > Dick Hillenbrand > Upstate New York Genealogy > www.unyg.com > > Locate new relatives with Family Finder DNA testing at: > www.GenealogyDNA.com > > > > On Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 8:05 PM, Donna Burdick <dburdick@stny.rr.com> > wrote: > >> Hello All >> >> There is a tradition that 2 islands in Oneida Lake, near Brewerton were >> named by the Indians "Peter Smith's Eyes," a reference to Peter Smith of >> Peterboro, father of Gerrit Smith. >> >> Could this have been a reference to Frenchman's Island and Dunham's >> Island? >> Are they near Brewerton? >> >> I tried to go online to find a map of the Lake that included islands but >> couldn't find one. >> >> Thanks, Donna B. >> >> >> >> E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) >> Database version: 6.14780 >> http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/ >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> NYMADISO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NYMADISO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > > E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) > Database version: 6.14780 > http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/ E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) Database version: 6.14780 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/
Yes those two islands would be the ones, but where did you find a reference to the "tradition"? Hello All There is a tradition that 2 islands in Oneida Lake, near Brewerton were named by the Indians "Peter Smith's Eyes," a reference to Peter Smith of Peterboro, father of Gerrit Smith. Could this have been a reference to Frenchman's Island and Dunham's Island? Are they near Brewerton? I tried to go online to find a map of the Lake that included islands but couldn't find one. Thanks, Donna B. E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) Database version: 6.14780 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/
Donna, Did you ever try splashing plain soft water on gravestones. On many of them it will bring ut the printing so it can be photographed clearly. Some, it won't help, though. Chas

I did try Assoc. for Gravestone Studies and didn't see any rubbing paper available. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dick Hillenbrand" <nygenes@gmail.com> To: <nymadiso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 06, 2010 8:18 PM Subject: Re: [NYMADISO] Gravestone Rubbing Kits > Pushin Daisies is out of stock but same kit from here: > http://www.themourningsampler.com/Pages/GravestoneArt.html > > You might want to check with the Association of Gravestone studies. > > I used the back side of a roll of wallpaper one time in a pinch and it > worked pretty good. > > Dick Hillenbrand > Upstate New York Genealogy > www.unyg.com > > Locate new relatives with Family Finder DNA testing at: > www.GenealogyDNA.com > > > > > > On Tue, Apr 6, 2010 at 8:06 PM, Donna Burdick <dburdick@stny.rr.com> > wrote: > >> Thanks Tink >> >> I guess I'm really hesitant about ordering from places when I can't even >> figure out if they are still in business.
