    1. [NYMADISO] Madison Co. Needs Your Support
    2. Sandy Wilsey
    3. I wish to make you aware of a Madison Co. project that would welcome your support.! A handful of Peterboro people have worked diligently for a number of years to showcase the impressive role of Madison Co. in the Abolition Movement, and bring about awareness of the influence of G. Smith. NAHOF (National Abolition Hall of Fame) has applied and been accepted as a candidate for a $250,000 grant from Pepsi. Now they need daily on-line voting support from those people who care about Madison Co. Voting requires you to register your e-mail address and invent a password. You are allowed to sign in and vote each day until the end of June. If this project receives enough votes to be ranked 1 or 2, it will be eligible to receive the money. Please take a look at the proposed project. If you wish to add you support, you will be able to register and vote at the address below: http://www.refresheverything.com/nahofm Thank you for your consideration!! Sandy

    3. Tink, Thanks very much. There is a lot of info there and it will take me a while to "digest" it. Those Lewises are much like Joneses--there a whole heap of them, many related and many not. The Clayton Page, you noted, is my father. Thanks again. 1. Re: [NYMADISO] Lewis family
    2. Tink Miller
    3. Hi Charles, I cruised through the census records on Ancestry.com to see what's there. Maybe posting the info will trigger someone to recognize a connection for you. 1840 census: Lewis, George, age 20-30; 1 female under age 5; 1 female age 20-30. (This would fit the ages for George, Cornelia and eldest daughter Sophia.) He is listed next to a Charles Lewis family: 1 male 5-10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 20-30; 1 male 60-70; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 50-60, and 1 female, 80-90. Could be his parents or grandparents and some siblings. Further down the same page are listed the William and Albert Lewis families. See listings below for 1850 census for info on these families. 1850 census: George's farm is situated in-between several other Lewis households, which very likely are related: Family #12 - Lewis, George 41, Cornelia, 39, Sophia, 10, and Charles, 7, and Benton Fowler, 15, reside on a farm in Madison, Madison Co. All three children attended school. No explanation of Benton's relationship to family. All born in NY. Residing on farm next door (#11) is Lewis, William J., 33; Mary J., 27; Seymour 18, and Gertrude F, 2. All born in NY. Residing on other side, farm next door (#13), is Lewis, William, 57/67?; Atlanta, 58; and Emogene, 22, born in NY. Wm and Atlanta were born in Conn. Next household past that (#14) is Lewis, Alfred, 33, and John Lewis, 31. Both born in NY. Three houses further down (#17) is Lewis, Thompson B., 34; Lucy, 32; Lucy F., 10; Maria A., 7; Henry, 3. Thompson is a "taylor". All born in NY. Listed on preceding page of census, family #3, is Lewis, Albert, 43, farmer; Emeline/Emaline, 42; Austin G., 14; Albert U., 10. Alll born in NY. 1860 census: Lewis, George 51; Cornelia, 49; Sophia, 21; Charles, 17; and Morton, 9, live on farm in Madison, Madison Co. All born in NY. Farm value is $4060. 1870 census: George Lewis family resides on their farm in Solsville, Madison Co. - Geo. is 61, Cornelia 59 and Morton 20. Also there is laborer Arthur Pierce and domestic servant Ann Comstock. Farm value is $8540, so it was a big place. 1880 census: Morton S, 28, his wife Viola L, 28, and their daughter Bertha M, 3, reside with his in-laws - Williston R Lawrence, 60, and wife Elvira/Elmira?, 56, on their farm in Madison. He was born in Mass.; Elmira and the others were born in NY. Also there are two laborers - Marion Totten 23, born NY, and John Thornton 24, born Ireland. [note - Viola was deceased 23 Jan 1896, interred Indian Opening Cemetery]. George 71 and Cornelia 69 still reside in Madison on their own. He's a retired farmer. His parents were both born in Mass. and hers were both born in Conn. 1892 NY state census: neither George nor Cornelia appear. Perhaps you can find obits between 1880 and 1892. 1900 census: Morton and Alice live on a farm in Madison town with her son Clayton Page, 8, born Oct 1891. Morton, age 49, was born in Nov 1850. Alice, 35, was born Sept. 1864. They have been married less than 1 year. The farm is mortgaged. 1910 census, on a farm in Madison Township: Morton S, 59, and Alice G, 45, have been married 10 years - 2nd marriage for both. Also in house - Clayton L. Page, son-in-law, 18; Charles R Stowell, 71, father-in-law, and Melissa Stowell, 69/67?, mother-in-law. The Stowell's have been married 48 years and have 5 children, all living. Living next door is Chester P. Stowell, 34; Bertha M. 33, wife; Lawrence M., 9, and Howard C., 3, sons. They have been married 11 years and have 2 children, both living. This is a farm. [This Bertha M. appears to be the daughter of Morton from his first marriage, and has married a brother or other relative of Alice. Note son named Lawrence, which is Viola's mother's maiden name.] Ancestry reports that a Morton Lewis is listed in the AGBI - Volume: 103, Page Number: 467. Reference: Babcock gen. by Steph. Babcock. New York, 1903. (30,640p.): 135. Perhaps someone can identify the gravesites for George and Cornelia to confirm their dates of death. Apparently was before 1892. I searched Find-a-grave and a couple other sites, but nothing found. Tink At 05:48 AM 5/27/10, you wrote: I wonder if anyone is researching this Lewis family? 3. The newspaper of the era in Hamilton was the Republican: The Hamilton Republican was founded by General Nathaniel King, and first appeared as The Madison Farmer in 1828. Under six changes of name and twelve proprietorships it has been continued until at the present time it is nearing the close of its 67th volume. [1]http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nymadiso/progham.htm Says the article was transcribed but doesn't identify the source document. Title of the page is "Progressive Hamilton". Appears to be from end of 1800's or early 1900's. It does not delineate the other names the paper operated under. Perhaps you can locate if any archive is holding any remaining copies. Also a link on Google books about the "Payne's of Hamilton" coughed up the info that King was the first principal of Hamilton Academy. A military link says he commanded 2 brigades during War of 1812. Perhaps he was buried in a state or national military cemetery? Wanted to let everyone know my error. Donna B. E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (6.1.0.447) Database version: 6.14880 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/

    3. I saw a blurb on one site saying that his house is preserved in the historic district in Hamilton. Perhaps the newspapers of the time in Hamilton would have an obit or other article indicating place of burial. Since he was prominent and served in government, I would expect it to be reported. 3. Thanks Tink I went there and found 2 Kings that I don't think are related. Since Nathaniel King was married 3 times, I also looked for the maiden names of his wives but didn't find anything. His wives were Ottilia Mayer, Mary Bates, and Elizabeth Tefft. 3. Does anyone know where Lambs Corners Cemetery is? From what I've been able to figure, it's the same place as Columbus Corners Cemetery in Chenango County. After many years of trying to find the burial site of Gen. Nathaniel King of Hamilton, NY, I found on Google Book Search a bio. that indicates he's buried at Lambs Corners. Went to Find-A-Grave among other sites and can't find him. The "bio" I found is not totally accessible. Seems to be from "Who Was Who in America with World Notables," Volume 3, 1963.
