Hi again all & thanks for all your suggestions. What would I do without you? I think I've found the tune for Ridden by the Slave Power. It's actually spelled "Benny Havens Oh" and was a traditional song at the academy at West Point. Also found it on U-Tube as the background music for a tribute to Civil War soldiers. It was also sung in the movie Santa Fe Trail with Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHaviland. Thanks, Donna
Karen, thank you. I went to the site and was able to "open" the book. But, there's only lyrics, no music. Hi Donna, I googled the name of the song and several links came up for the lyrics, no music. This one allows you to download or print it out. It is the "Hutchinson Republican Songster", a book of campaign songs from the 1860 Presidential election and actually published in 1860 : http://www.archive.org/details/bobolinkminstrel00bung On left side of screen there are links to select how to access it in various formats. I used the pdf link and it came up with beautiful images of the actual pages. The lyrics of the song are on pages 27 and 28, no music notation. It says "sung to the tune of "Benney Haven". You can print it out too. I found info about a song called "To Benny's Haven" on the soundtrack for the TV mini-series "North and South". Maybe a library loan request would find a copy for you to barrow from somewhere. Otherwise Amazon.com has used copies of the soundtrack on cd's for $7.55 and up + $2.98 shipping. It's a double album combined with the sound track of the movie "The Right Stuff". Putnam lived in Massachusetts a long time. Maybe one of the libraries or universities there have the music in their music collections. Maybe Library of Congress has the original music. Their archives include a huge collection of music including recordings, and a special collection relating to slave narratives and other folk music that wasn't written down. www.loc.gov Hope those leads help. Hi everybody. You helped me before--maybe again? I'm doing a program in early December on George W. Putnam, an abolitionist who lived in Peterboro for about 10 years, beginning in 1858. This guy had quite a varied career, including a time when he wrote lyrics for the Hutchinson Family Singers and they composed the music. One song was called "Ridden by the Slave Power" and I would like to find the actual music. There's a possibility that I can have someone at the program who can sing the song. I think it may have been sung to the tune "Benny Haven" or "Benny Heaven." Can't find that either. Is there anyone who can help me? As you've probably figured out, I can't read music--even if I find it!!!! My great great grandfather, Charles Cutler, the choir director from Peterboro, is probably rolling over in his grave. Thanks, Donna Burdick
Donna, Have no idea but you might try Syracuse University. *Syracuse University Library* *Belfer Audio Archive* 222 Waverly Avenue Syracuse, New York 13244-2010 p 315.443.2573 f 315.443.2060 I had a tour of the archive/museum about 20 years ago and it is built into the hillside for climate control and is right next to the Bird Library. The archive looked like it had every record ever made, to me. That and the fact that SU has a major interest in the abolitionist movement and Gerrit Smith even if they do not have the info you are looking for they might be able to help you research it. Some of the buttons and tools might be missing from your viewer bar. If you right click in the grey area just above the .pdf document you are trying to view, you will see at the bottom of that popup menu more tools. At the bottom of the More Tools menu are items to check mark for Select & Zoom. Make sure Select & Zoom has a checkmark and then the Zoom Out, Zoom In, Zoom Value, etc. that you would like to see on your tool bar. -----Original Message----- From: nymadiso-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nymadiso-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Wldblume2@aol.com Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:56 AM To: nymadiso@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYMADISO] Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Town of Lenox, Madison County What I have seen and can see it looks like a great job. Hello everybody, Sandy Wilsey and I are happy to report the census for more than 4,000 burials at this cemetery is now on line. You can reach the listings through the cemetery index page: http://home.comcast.net/~ingallsam/Cemeteries/cemindex.htm or directly: http://home.comcast.net/~ingallsam/Cemeteries/Lenox/Mt_Pleasant/MtPl.htm Because this large listing contains more than 4,000 burials, the surname listings and section listings are in .pdf form. Think you will find it faster. The pages have been spidered and are ready for searching. You can narrow your search to only this new listing by using the following Boolean search operator: mount pleasant AND name name being whatever name (can be more than one word) for which you are searching. This will help you discover all the maiden names in addition to the surname listing. We tried to include survivors whenever possible which might be helpful. I also encourage you to read the introduction for an overview of the process in compiling this listing, and perhaps you will also enjoy reading about some of the historical figures who are buried at Mount Pleasant. You can let Sandy at swilsey@twcny.rr.com or me ingallsam@comcast.net know if you see any corrections and we will be sure to check them out. Anita
