Hi Barb, I thought I had a WHEELER in my family, but now I can't find her..well, it is possible that I have made an error there. As for the BALDWIN, I have a gr grandparent named HANNAH BALDWIN B 22 jAN 1699 of Norwich, New London, Ct., her father, Thomas was b 1662 in Ct., his father, John was d 1687 in Ct., and his father, Sylvester Baldwin d enroute to the USA - Ship Martin. I don't have any information on Mary Brown other than her father's name which is John b 2 Dec 1682 in Reading Middlesex, Ma., son of John Brown. My g grandmother, Mary Brown was b 1734 and d 1812. Mary (Brown) and Ephraim Warren had 10 children: Ezekiel, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Lucy, Josiah, Louvina, Phoebe, Surviva, Lydia and Ephriam. I am currently trying to search my gr grandmother, their daughter, Lucy Warren who married Charles Hopkins..its been difficult..it is sort of the missing link, their daughter, Surviva (?) married Stephen Reed..haven't found out anything on her, but a little on Stephen Reed, he was in the war of 1812..and had my gg grandmother LUCINDA SURVIVA REED who married LEVI BACKUS TILLOTSON. So, maybe we can keep in touch and help each other...Let me know how it goes? A site you might be interested in searching is: Tracycrocker.com check out the surname site..of course it is her genealogy, but I found my Brown's listed there, you might also get lucky. Another site is longislandgenealogy.com..wheeler, baldwin and brown were also there and of course, familysearch.org...to check out the Baldwins...good luck..let me know if it helps. Debera.
Hi Debera, Thanks for your reply! I don't have a Mary Brown in my line that I know of, but I don't go as far back as her birthdate of 1743. The farthest back I have is James C. BROWN b. 4/16/1827 d. 8/13/1897 (Town of Fenner). I don't have any sibling or parent info on him. Do you have any more information on Mary? I am also interested in other lines you have listed. I have WHEELER (not much there), and BALDWIN also in my line. Care to share? Thanks! Barb

Hello, My family was also from Cazenovia by way of CT. I have a MARY BROWN who married Ephraim Warren, both of Killingly, CT. One of their daughters, a Lucy Warren, of the same area married Charles Hopkins also from Killingly. Their daughter, Surviva Hopkins married Stephen Reed, Surviva was born in 1790 and Stephen Reed was born 1787, but I don't know where. I don't know if you have a MARY BROWN in your line, but her DOB was abt 1743 give or take a few years, as Lucy Warren was born 4*8*1763 abt. Maybe we can connect some dots here? Surviva (Hopkins) Reed and Stephen Reed are buried in the Old Burial Ground in De Ruyters, and it shows they lived in the area for many many years. The lines I am searching are: TILLOTSON, BACKUS, WADSWORTH, WHEELER, BROWN, REED, WARREN, BALDWIN, EVANS, HOPKINS, to name a few. With all best wishes, Debera.

Hello, I'm trying to locate copies of local or church records, newspaper articles, etc. for some ancestors who lived in and around modern Madison County in the 19th century. I'm trying to prove Mayflower ancestry and am having trouble digging up primary source documents for 2 generations. Below are the names of the couples I'm looking for information on and the year and county and state/colony they were married in, but the couples married in about 1803 and 1831 are the ones I need the most help with. James Watts Sturtevant and May Lydia Spooner (1887, Madison Co., NY) Alvin Sturtevant and Adelia Luzette Curtis (1860, Madison, NY) Ornan Sturtevant and Artimicia Stebbins (1831, Madison, NY) James Sturtevant and Abigail Groves (bef. 1803, either Madison (Chenango) or Cortland (Onandaga) Co., NY) James Sturtevant and Ann Leach (1769, Plymouth co., Province of MA Bay) What I need most are birth and/or baptism records for James Sturtevant (b. 6 Aug 1777, MA) and Abigail Groves (10 Sep 1777, MA?) or some such document that has their names and their parents' names on it (James Sturtevant and Ann Leach, and Retire Groves and Abigail King) and the same for Ornan Sturtevant (24 June 1806, Madison) and Artimicia Stebbins (20 Sep 1806, Hubbardsville ?) (Harvey Stebbins and Axseph Pease, both of whom are buried at the Sweet Farm Cemetery in Madison). A copy of a letter written in 1939 by James Watts Sturtevant says that James and Abigail were married in Cortland, which I don't think would been a village or town with that name before 1803. I don't know for certain when they were married, but their first child, Thomas, was born in 1803. I found an on-line Cortland county biography for their Sangerfield-born sixth child, James Watts Sturtevant (the great-uncle of my great-great-grandfather James Watts Sturtevant) that was published in 1885 by H.P. Smith, D. Mason & Co. publishers of Syracuse, NY. His siblings and their father are listed in the entry, so that helps a wee bit (also, brothers John H. and Zebina appear in a history of Cortland county), but I need evidence from an earlier source that connects Ornan with his 9 siblings and their parents James and Abigail. Ornan and Artimicia were married on 19 Feb 1831, but I don't know where their marriage took place. A death record or obituary for James and Abigail (Groves) Sturtevant would also be extremely helpful. She died on 5 August 1834 and he died on 15 Aug 1839. They both died in in Hubbardsville, Madison County and were buried in the Hubbardsville Cemetery (what is the name of that cemetery now?). Microfilm of the Hamilton Currier and the Hamilton Sentinal may be available through Colgate University for 1834, and the Hamilton Citizen, Hamilton Eagle, and Hamilton Palladium all were publishing in 1839, so I'm hoping to turn up some form of obituary for them in a newspaper or a church document. At that point in time I think the family belonged to a Baptist church. If anyone can provide contact information for a church or historical society that offers assistance on genealogical searches in the Hubbardsville area I'd greatly appreciate it. Alvin Sturtevant's 28 Nov 1860 marriage to Adelia Luzette Curtis (b. 9 June 1836 to Allen Curtis and Arabella L. Richardson) was recorded in the Delhi Republican, a paper he owned in Delaware co., on 8 Dec 1860, his mother's obituary appears to have been in the Delhi Gazette in the weeks following her death in Michigan on 16 Sep 1866 (Artimicia was buried near her parents at the Sweet Farm Cemetery), and his father's second marriage to a Mrs. Jane Gage of Lawrence, Michigan was recorded in the Delhi Republican on 17 July 1869. Alvin's short history is mentioned in the Delhi chapter in "The History of Delaware County; 1797-1880" by W.W. Munsell, and I wonder if the Republican may have printed an obituary for him after his death on 25 May 1835 in Michigan or one for his father Ornan after his death on 23 Dec 1878. Both Alvin and Adelia were buried in the Town Cemetery in Madison. I don't have copies of any of the above documents. Can anyone offer me advice on who to contact to obtain copies? I'm hoping to prove the James Chilton line first because that is the Mayflower line that James Watts writes about the most in his letter, and my mother also often told my brother, sister and me about Mary Chilton when we were children. I have, where available, birth, marriage and death certificates from me back to Alvin Sturtevant, as well as US Federal Census images that put the family members together back to Ornan Sturtevant's 1850 household. I also have a copy of the census image for Ornan in 1840 and one for his father James in 1830 (all three images are for Hamilton, Madison Co.) If anyone is working on the same line and needs copies of things I've collected, please let me know and I'll send you either digital or paper copies. I'm grateful for assistance or advice offered. All the best, Loren

(mailto:NYMADISO-L@rootsweb.com) I'm looking for any descendants of MICHAEL J. DUNN bn. abt. Nov. 1857 in N.Y. His parents were JOHN DUNN of Ireland bn. abt. 1827 and Lidia of England bn. abt. 1832. John Dunn and family lived in Oneida Castle in 1860 census. The 1865 Madison co. census showed Lidia Dunn living with her children in Oneida. Info from living family members say that John Dunn had accidentally drowned and she had moved to Oneida and rented rooms. In 1870 census Lidia Dunn has married William J. Knowles and they have a daughter Elizabeth bn. Dec. 1869 (my husband's G. Grandmother.) Daughter Elizabeth is adopted out to Reuben and Mary Gordon after Lidia's death. Baptism at St. Patrick's list the mother as Elizabeth Knowles and father William J. Knowles. (Mother is not given as Lidia). Lidia reportedly died around 1874 and Willliam J. Knowles left the family taking one son William Albert Knowles with him (his son by a previous marriage to Ada Wood). William Albert was taken by his father to Wampsville where he is left in the care of a hat weaver. There his money and mother's bible is stolen and he runs away. Even in his final years with a stroke William Albert cannot draw his railroad pension because he doesn't even know where he was born or the name of his mother. After years of research I finally find Lidia and John Dunn's son Michael and his family. Michael has married and named his children after his brothers and sisters and a daughter after his mother. Michael has remained in the area where he lived with his mother. He is living on Broad St. in Oneida (Lenox) in 1900 census. Michael bn. July 1857 in N.Y marries Elizabeth. Their children are:: Lidia A. bn. Nov. 1882 ( named for his mother) Frank son bn. Sept. 1884 Mary, daughter bn. June 1887 John bn. Appr. 1889 Leo bn. Feb. 1893 Margaret bn. June 1899 I believe there are living descendants of this family still living in the same area. If so I would very much like to hear from them. Perhaps, they could fill in some of the gaps especially about where Lidia was buried and when and further information of William J. Knowles. Anyone having any info on this family, please write. I know the number of Dunn's in New York make it difficult to trace the family but since I have been able to advance two generations it gives me hope. Thanks for any help. Phyllis

Hi, Listers, According to a story in the Oneida Dispatch, two executives of the old Oneida Ltd. have bought the silverware factory including equipment and materials to keep it going. They have formed a new company called Sherrill Manufacturing and have at present 25 employees. They hope to become a major supplier to the "new" Oneida Ltd who expects to outsource the mfg. of their products. The new owners are a couple of Welshmen by the name of Roberts and Owens. I, being a good part Welsh myself, expect they will have the Welsh stubbornness to make a success of it. (chuckle). Hope so, anyway. Chas .
Hi, Loring and Listers, Sorry I made mistakes on those two Eaton websites. Here are the correct ones: www.ouroldetowne.com/index.htm and www.ouroldetowne.com/back-street-mary-place.htm It looks like they are both just one site. Maybe Mary gives an e mail address on the web site?? Chas
Pat, I forwarded your note about the Bibles to Back Street Mary in Eaton. Maybe she will be interested. I seem to connect the name Morse with her and her town.
