    1. Re: [NYMADISO] Exhumation
    2. Hi, I don't know the laws in New York, but in Nevada there must be written notification to the cemetery from a known relative before a body can be exhumed for any reason, and vise versa. When my mother died 3 years ago and my brother and I were at the cemetery arranging the burial plans, my brother suggested we go see the graves of our grandparents. Well, we searched and searched, and my brother was certain we were in the right location, (he is a land surveyor). Too make a long story short, we went back into the cemetery's office and explained to them that we couldn't find or grandparents. Needless to say, there were a lot of "oh, oh looks" and they assured us that if we could come back they would physically take us to the location of their burial. My brother and I went back and looked in the area that my brother was certain that the bodies were and it was only then that we noticed that the wall that once was squared off was now rounded, with freshly dug dirt, no longer any grass, sprinklers out of the ground, and so forth. It was very clear that they had just changed the design of the wall and our grandparents had been buried in the corner where the two walls met. I spoke to the funeral director about this on the day of my mother's burial three days later and he was quietly chuckling on the phone...and said something like "we found them, and when you are here we will show you where they are." After my mother's funeral we went to the office and they gave us a recently made plot map and my brother and myself went to the area on the map that listed their burial. We found them, but the headstones were brand new, (they have been buried for over 15 years), there were no nicks from lawn mowers, no tarnish from weather, nothing, and since they were cremated it would have been easy for the cemetery to have moved the headstones and the urn that was positioned between them. Believe me, the cemetery was sweating what action our family was going to take. My dad didn't seem to care, and since it was his dad, we dropped it, but it just goes to show that anything can happen. It also makes one wonder what they would have done with the headstones and cremated remains if it wasn't for such a twist of fate. Just thought I would share, and good luck on your quest. Debera.

    3. Hi, List: I have a slightly different question and I hope someone on the list can help. Is there a special form or type of paperwork that needs to be done to have a relative exhumed? I'm sure there is, I just don't know what it would be. Is it something that the funeral director would know? The problem is kind of a long story, so if everyone doesn't want to read on, maybe they could respond to the above question without hearing "the rest of the story"!! I have a cousin who has been blessed with several children; five of them are fine and all grown up, etc., but the two children that seem to have been "misplaced" were born with severe birth defects and didn't live to be very old. I thought Bobby Joe was 2, but the cemetery list has him as 1 year old and his brother Eric was only 4 months old. When these children passed away, my cousin and her husband didn't have a cemetery plot and couldn't afford to purchase a large one like they would need. So, they used the "family" plot for a temporary burial site. We have parents, grand, great grand and great great grandparents buried there as well. My cousin and her husband told the cemetery superintendent that it would be temporary and that when they could get a plot of their own, they would have the children exhumed and moved (to another area of Madison County). Anyway, my cousin's brother (my older cousin), passed away in June this year and when we were all at the cemetery, she asked the funeral director if there was any trouble (room-wise) finding a place for her brother. The funeral director told her that there was enough room and that the babies had been moved. She thought he meant that they moved them a few inches this way or that way in order to fit her brother in, but he said, "No, they've been moved to ......." (the other place in Madison County). She was so upset. She just lost her only older brother and then to be told that "someone" moved her babies "somewhere" at "sometime". Nobody knows who took them, where exactly they took them or when they were taken! This all sounds very unlikely to me. For one thing, doesn't someone have to pay for the exhumation? And, isn't there a government type form that needs to be signed by the parents? I really think they are still in the original cemetery because there have been many "turn overs" in management at the cemetery and several of the people who were keeping notes (kind of poorly until recently), have passed away themselves. I think that when the children were buried, the management was told that it was the intention to have them moved (eventually), and when they wrote it down in their book, they simply wrote something like "babies to be moved to ........." and it has been interpretted as having truly been done. I have spoken to the superintendent and the caretaker and they both swear that the children were already moved. Now, if my cousin wants to have her children exhumed and she fills out whatever paperwork is necessary according the NYS and then have them moved to "........." and pays someone to go there and remove them and we all have a ceremony in the new cemetery; who will they be bringing if the children aren't there? I'm so sorry for dragging this out, I thought I could simplify it but it's just too weird! Thank you all for your patience and I hope someone can guide us along. Best Always, Carol P.S. 3. Hello to all Been busier than a long tailed cat in a room full of rockers around here, lately. Most of my free time is taken up with trying to answer letters regarding families, cooking, and being the good househusband... As some of you know, I'm spending a lot of energy on producing an album (or two) of music I've written over the last 20 some odd years. All I really have to offer is that I've updated my site a little bit with quite a lengthy "thesis" on the early Burton family, courtesy of Dwayne Burton, who is "of the midwest somewhere"... There are a couple of other new links in the mix, one of which could be beneficial to most anyone studying Madison County - you'll see it if you go looking. I invite you to visit by clicking on the link at the bottom of this. Hopefully I can have something worthwhile to share with you all in the coming months. I did finally receive the DeRuyter Grips work after 10 months of waiting, but I think someone may already have that online. I may put! that up over the next month or so, anyway - if I am wrong, and it isn't online, please let me know. I hope this finds you all well, in good spirits, and wealthy with firewood... 3. Dear John: I have ancestors who were in Madison County in late 1790 to 1867. My Spencers' were Rodman Spencer and his wife Abigail. They had 8 children of which are William, Jacob, John,Joseph,Susannah, Sally and Elizabeth and one other child of whose name I can't think of right now. But what I am interested in is John D. Spencer who married a Polly Ann (I believe Burton). They too had several chidren but their son Perry married Adelia Smith of Oswego County and they then lived in Eaton. But what makes me think that Polly Ann's maiden name is that Perry and Adelia had a set of twins who were Emory Burton Spencer and Emily Burton Spencer. Do you have any Spencers in your family of Burtons or should I say do you have a Polly Ann Burton. I think that the middle name was given them because of their grandmother Polly Ann. Any help here is greatly appreciated Jean Payton ----- Original Message ----- From: "JCB" <genes@dodo.com.au> To: <NYMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 11, 2005 12:31 AM Subject: [NYMADISO] Greetings > Hello to all > > Been busier than a long tailed cat in a room full of rockers around here, > lately. But no connection so far that I know of. One thing I'm happy to see is the definite connection between John & Elizabeth in Lebanon. I was 99% sure they were husband & wife, but this is additional info. I'll check the rest of the info against what I have in my database. Thanks again for taking the time to send it to me. 1. Re: [NYMADISO] Oliver Kenyon and Nathaniel Keller Revolutionary War Veterans
    2. Thank you so very much Pat. You have been a great help. I believe I descend from Oliver Kenyon through his daughter Prudence, born October 1801, married John Barber of Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York, removed to Illinois in 1838 and died in Iowa in 1886. Our family knows that Oliver Kenyon married Sarah Sweet on November 24, 1773 in South Kingston, Rhode Island. But we are not absolutely certain that she was the mother of Prudence born 28 years after the marriage. Do you have any information about Oliver Kenyon's wife? And do you know anything about Prudence? And I am, of course, very curious about what your relationship is to Oliver Kenyon. Or are you extremely knowledgable? Jeff Ward in Florida.

    1. Re: [NYMADISO] Oliver Kenyon and Nathaniel Keller Revolutionary War Veterans
    2. Jeff According to his pension papers he was Born June 1 1754 in Richmond RI. He was the son of Thomas kenyon B 1/26/1768 and his wife Catherine Ney. Thomas Kenyon Sr was made a Freeman in 1733 and listed as JP in Richmond from 1750 to 1752, 1755 to 1762 1770 to 1771. Thomas SR is in military census of 1777 resident of Richmond. His will was proved in 1778. It states his wife and all their living children, a granddaughter,Martha, daughter of their youngest child, Catherine. He is named in the estate of his deceased mother, Elizabeth Kenyon, in Richmond. He and his wife are buried near the "Captain Thomas Kenyon Deacon David Kenyon Farm." Their are 3 Thomas Kenyon Farms in what is called the Shannock Purchae. However the home of Thomas Sr. and Catherine is no longer there. He served a Total of 17 months (various dates from 11/76 until 1781) in the Rev. War under Capt. Simeon Clarke, Capt, Richard Baily under Colonels Robert Brown, Colonel ? Reynolds, Col. Charles Dyer and Col. Thomas Potter. Oliver lived in Richmond until 1802 moving to Carliale Shcoharie County and in 1827 he moved to Brookfield, Madison County, New York. His pension was $56.66 per Annum and was effective 3/4/1831. I would say that it is more likely he is among the SDB Kenyons rather than a Quaker and many settled in the Madison County Area. 2. I am looking for any information on Oliver Kenyon. According to Tuttle, he was born in 1753. Served in the Rhode Island Militia. Pensioned in 1832. I have not been able to fnd any pension information for him on Heritage Quest. Looking at another Tuttle listing, it mentions Nathaniel Keller, died September 30, 1853 age 96. Buried west of Fenner's Corner. On Rev. War Veteran Census Roll in 1840. I did not find Mr. Keller listed on the transcribed 1840 Veteran Census that is available on line. My primary interest is in Oliver Kenyon. I do not have access to the 1830, 1840 or 1850 census. Can anyone tell anything of interest about Oliver Kenyon? Was he, like most of the other Madison County Kenyons, a Quaker? Jeff Ward
