I have been researching my family history, and most of my family from my fathers side is from Madison County, although I have just learned this recently. I was wondering if you know anyone by the last name of Colclough or Lindsley. My great grandparents grew up in Munnsville and Stockbridge and I think that I still have extended family that lives there. I also think that many of my ancestors are burried in Madison County. I am very interested in learning more about this area, what it was like in the early 1900's, and whether you might know of my relatives. On the 6th of March for about three weeks I'm going to be away from my computer. This situation has arrived that I need to be away, where computer access will be limited and what little time I'll have for such will mainly be used to let those close know how I'm doing. This absence is not due to illness. I hope to be back in the saddle by the first of April but will take it a day at a time on my return. While I could say more, I'll leave it at that as I don't feel comfortable sharing more at this time. I'm writing this list to announce that effective immediately, John way over in Australia will be caretaking the list until my return. Thank you John for doing so. Tim
Patty, It's an easy answer to that question. Both. I'm making a quick trip to Madison Co. My elusive g-grandmother died in Lenox at her home. Would it be better to go to the Lenox Town Clerk, or the Village Clerk? Patty
One of my closest friends married a KEOPKE ( Dale) here in Seattle about 1980? they have since divorced so I don't know where Dale is and I don't have much contact with his former wife as she has moved on. I am sure there might be some connection with some of the Kapkes in this country, or any of the other variations, but so far I haven't come across any that I could definitively say were connected. Much depends upon my German research, but German research is harder because information that would be available to me here is not available there. You have to be a direct descendent to do so. I managed to get my father's sister's birth record because my cousin wrote for it. My father knew very little about his family although he did say his father Henry was one of five brothers. Hamburg won't give them to me because I am not a direct descendent. So, I have to try and work through Henry. His father was Peter, and I have written to another location in Germany for his record or Henry's birth record. I have yet to have a reply. IN short, I don't know who I might be related to! I did find someone on my Irish list (mother's side), but my father's side is one big mystery. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Friday, February 29, 2008 1:08 PM To: [email protected]
Hi, Who were Timothy Heffernan (born about 1785 and who married Catherine Dwyer) and Patrick Heffernan's (who married Margaret Donagher) parents? I did some general genealogy searching and found one reference to them as the sons (illegitimate?) of Charles Abrams of Birmingham, England and an unnamed Heffernan woman from Tipperary, Ireland. Is there any truth to this? Many of their descendents ended up in Madison County, NY. Thanks, Sharlotte [email protected] http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/o/n/Sharlotte--N-Donnelly
I finally bit the bullet and wrote to the Vital Statistic office. They wouldn't tell me by phone if it was there without as formal request. So, it is off and on its way. If this doesn't work, I am not sure I know where to turn to find his birth record. We have been looking for this since the nineteen thirties. What a success record if I find it there. Thank you all for helping me think this through. Dorothea
I have an obit for a distant cousin (thanks to Donna Robinson), Gerald Davis of Hamilton. In the survivor's lists were such names as Lahue,Chlad,Crumb, as well as Davis. Also, the obit for my sister, Alyce Page Bartlett. I think, besides myself, her survivors, children being boys, are mostly Bartletts. If anyone wants a copy of either, I'll send you one off list. chas

Be sure you click on #2 where it says Choose connection speed. Which ever one is applicaple to you. DSL, LAN or whatever. go to #2 and login simply by using your email address. Be sure to put @ aol.com or whoever your provider is after your sn. I have forgotten that once or twice and sputtered away because I couldn't get into it. This should open up the wonderful world of FPC for you. Have fun and plan to spend many, many hours searching....One thing I have learned tho. Don't type in just a surname. Unless it is a very unusual one you probably won't get anything because there would be too many hits to list. So generally I just type in the first and last name. **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. I have used this site a great deal. I always enter a full name, i.e. "Murgatroyd Smith". Yes, in quotes. If the name can be spelled in different ways, I will go down to the next one and enter a fuzzy search with the number 2. That has helped many times. I cannot begin to tell you the number of obits, marriages, births, reunions, ec. I have found on this site for upstate New York family, i.e. Oswego, Madison, Cayuga, Wayne Co., and even a few from Rochester and Buffalo that have times to these counties. Have fun. Just play with it. Dorothy

Dorothea, I would contact the City/Town Clerk of the believed birth. They may have a limited index of information. Max Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: "Dorothea Sanderson" <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 12:39:12 To:<[email protected]> Subject: [NYMADISO] need help in searching for a birth record. I am new to the list and need some help if there is any available. I have been searching for a birth record for my father for many years as did my late mother before me. So far, neither of us has been successful. My Grandfather came from Germany in 1885, and my grandmother came in 1886 with her daughter Catherine. They were Henry, Dorothea, and Catherine Köpke. Their first and only American born child was my father who was born May 25, 1888. They originally settled in Albany. Henry was a cigar maker. Over the years, my mother starting in 1939, my mother searched for my father's birth record in Albany and Utica with no results. I searched again in the 1960,s and again, no results. We also both searched through Cigar makers Union without meaningful results. A few years ago I started searching again on Ancestry, but found nothing. I then turned to the family looking for census record. Eventually I found them in all but the 1890 census which today is no longer available due to destruction by fire. About a year ago, I found Henry Köpke, a cigar maker listed in on Ancestry in Oneida New York, Madison County. This may mean that they lived in Oneida in 1888 when the record was taken, and not Albany. Since the 1890 census was destroyed, I can't check that for substantiating data. Is there ANY way to find out before going to Vital records, if he was actually born in Oneida? This family eventually changed their spelling to Kapke. However, in the directory, they used the spelling Köpke. That may be how my father was registered. I would also like to find out if his full name included a middle name. He never thought he had one. I am inclined to disagree because his father had three forenames, his mother had three, and his sister, born in Germany had four. Can anyone help me?
