Though not all have provided the information I had hoped for, still I am grateful for all the help I can get. Sometimes a negative answer is still usefull. 3. Why in the world would you be angry at someone who obviously spent a great deal of time trying to help you. Clearly he didn't know what information you already have. He went out of his way to an extraordinary degree in an effort to fill in the gaps and give you some new leads to explore. You owe him a big thank you. 3. I think you need to see what records are available for the area your ancestors were at. Also you could check with the church headquarters. In Cortland co., NY where the village of Scott was settled by SDB, the church records are at the Cortland County Historical Society. There was a lot of interaction between this group and the Madison Co. SDB. Many Madison Co. SDB members are mentioned in those records. It is a good idea to check the Scott records as you just may find mention of the madison Co. people. I have not found any centralization of all the records so it is searching here and there. I believe there was a failed SDB settlement in Niles, Cayuga Co., NY area. I had a Hall line that was there and on the surrounding lots are many SDB names and it appears they settled the area at the same time which was a commiojn SDB practise. They would send out several families to settle a new area. It is said they crossed the continent this way in a few short years. An ancestor, Benajah Hall (Jr.) I have seen mentioned (when in the Albany area after leaving Washington Co., RI) as a minister of that church. But later the family "left" the SDB and no record in Cayuga Co. or anywhere I can find mentions this failed settlement. SDB church's present records seem not to have many older lists of ministers, members, etc. The Scott, NY settlement records mentions the people in Niles and how they rescued them from starvation by crossing a frozen Skaneatlas Lake up and down some of the steepest inclines I have ever seen (even today) a track/road and through very deep snow and drifts for miles to the rescue. It is an amazing story. At least this one church's entire records have been saved and are available. I do not know what others may be. So it can be frustrating trying to find info but the SDB list does have people that are helpful. Just do not forget to check other SDB churches in the vicinity where your ancestors settled. Sharon

    2. Hi Robin Not in NE but in New York State in 1836 the Seventh Day Baptist started Alfred University which was once associated with the Seventh Day Baptist Church for the purpose of educating their clergy and included a school of theology. However the SDB religious connection no longer exists but some of the buildings reflect this early purpose. Many of my Seventh Day Baptist attended this school. Do you have a specific person that you are tracing that might of attended this school? Not all early clergy attended a theology school. If you give a name perhaps I have something on that particular person. Regards Pat R

    3. Tim: Thanks for the church photos. My great grandfather was a minister in that church in 1910, for what duration though, I still do not know. I have photos of him at the pulpit and at the parsonage in DeRuyter. I have been all over the internet trying to find out more information about his ministry in DeRuyter with no luck as yet. He transferred to the Boulder SDB in 1920 and then to Berlin SDB in 1930 where he and my great grandmother lived out their last years. If anyone can tell me how to acquire records on SDB ministers I would be ever so greatful. The official SDB website claims they are unable to help genealogists. Well thanks again Tim for that article... I am glad to read the church will be restored. It is beautiful. And so was the parsonage back in the day. 3. Since this is a major change, I'm posting this as my one for or before the road messages. The following information came my way last night. TGN/RW ("RootsWeb") has implemented a policy change in which banners are to be placed on all TGN/RW hosted websites. RootsWeb intends to begin the placement of the banners beginning on or about March 15, 2008. The banners are viewable here: http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/default1.jpg [default one] http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/default2.jpg [default two] http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/default3.jpg [default three] If I so choose something like this can be placed on the sites I maintain, else one of the 3 above will appear or perhaps some other alternative. http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/custom.jpg [custom to USGenWeb Project] This banner will appear at the top of each and every page on the site(s). And away we go! Tim

    1. Re: [NYMADISO] restaurant name "Squate & Gobble"
    2. Tim This place sure brings back memories. Many years ago in the late 70's (and early 80's) it was a popular eating spot when one was on their way from Syracuse to Vernon Downs for the evening. Our Business Group ate at the "Squat & Gobble" many times and their Hot Turkey Sandwiches or Turkey dinners were A+ along with the rest of their menu. Even the name tells you the specialty of the restaurant so that was usually the choice of most in our group. Prices were reasonable and at that time their service was excellent. Besides with that good service one could always "Gobble" their dinner and make it to the "Downs" for the opening race and "Win" or "Lose" their money. Seems like "Lose" sticks out in my mind. 3. Tim, Your were right, my "dat and tif" problem is associated with my digital camera. All of those files are connected to pictures I took off the camera. So where does that leave me? That restaurant name seemed especially appropriate when we went there for Thanksgiving dinner. 3. When it was quoted John Button was from Westerly Co., NY, I believe that must be Westerly, RI. First as there is no Westerly Co. in NY and second as they settled in a Seventh Day Baptist community in Madison Co. it is likely they were from RI. The SDB church was out of Westerly, RI and surrounds. You might want to check the SDB rootsweb email list and also SDB records for more on this family. Sharon
