Hi Everyone, I am looking for the name of a cigar factory that existed in Oneida, Madison Co., New York during the 1900s. There is still a cigar store on Main Street. Does anyone know if this is just a cigar store or is it in the location of the old cigar factory. My relative who is listed on the 1900 Census is said to live on Williams Street which is a short walk to the main street location. All help is appreciated. Lynn Eivers
Descended from Mary Barrett DYER who was hung for her religious beliefs? I am descended from her. Her people came to Chenango County, NY and are buried here. I visit the graves sometimes in New Berlin. I think my earliest ancestor buried here is Oliver Dyer. Could you either on this forum or privately tell me who is writing this history? Thanks. Hello to all - good health, etc I subscribe to the Saratoga list and there is a woman, Leslie Potter, who is adding some interesting data, by way of that list. She refers to it as Brick Walls, but the information is taken from research she is doing on the 1777 Saratoga Tax District. The main reason I'm writing this is because the name Carpenter has just popped up, in her submissions, and this is a name that has been mentioned here, lately. If you aren't subscribed to the Saratoga list, the latest entries are at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/NYSARATO/2008-03 I know there is quite a relationship between Saratoga and Madison counties, early on. It might be worth a peek for somebody. John
No lake, Tim, Rebeccah is almost across the road from the Village. But is quite a long way up a hill in a thick woods full of brush and berry bushes. Apparently no attempt has been made to maintain it, but there is a big rock with a plaque set into it. A description will appear in the new updated "Guide to Madison County Cemeteries" that Anita Ingalls will be making available through MCHS in few weeks/months. I may be able to get a picture in better weather. Tim, I wonder if you knew (probably did) about the "non-burials" in the Village. Only two grave sites have the actual bodies in them, the rest have only the stone markers which were removed from Rebeccah Cemetery. So our relative is not really there, only his gravestone. Chas

Pat, Just curious (and probably grasping at straws--but it never hurts to ask), but did you ever see mention of a Carpenter family in the SDB records that you have researched? My g-grandfather, Alfred Madison Carpenter, was born in 1830 in Madison County, and I think there were Carpenters in DeRuyter, but I don't know if they were related. He was the 11th child and the only sibling's name I know was Roxyanna Carpenter Luther, who lived in Lebanon, NY. He is my brick wall, and I keep hoping I will stumble on something to give me clues to his parents. Learning English starts at 3 years of age. Starting in the 1st grade in China, children have 3 hours of homework a night. School is from 7 AM to 5 PM with a two hour break mid-day for a nap. In the higher grades they get 6 hours of homework a night. Tim Tim It make our system look like what it is....a joke! Depending upon the teacher, and I should add that the Kent, Washington State school dist is considered one of the better in the US, the children have little to no homework. School starts at 8:45. The school day ends at 2:55. There are two recess and one lunch break. While we here in the US have English - at least for now - as a native language, it is not taught much beyond very basic spelling in first grade. Kindergarten is just glorified day care. There really isn't that much math or reading until 3 - 4th grade. My son went into kindergarten knowing as much as most second to third grade students but I could not get the teacher to teach to his level. In third grade he was playing chess and trying to teach others but no imagination from the teachers on this. Amazing. It's the DUMB DOWN system. I don't know what NY is like buy you may well want to look into home schooling. Laurence Lance **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. Curious as to education comparison between the US and the PRC, ( I presume Tian is from there and not Tiwan) My son is now 12 and about to enter middle school so he would be somewhat older than she but I remember the previous years. Oopsy. So sorry for error. I'm curious about the comparison between educational systems in China vs. US. Is Tian more educated than children her age who have been attending US schools?
