Tracie, In the 1850 census, Mitchell S. 45 & Rebecca 40 are living in Livingston, NY as you stated, but their place of birth is Maryland for Mitchell as well as Rebecca. Six children are listed and all born in NY. The first male is Washington who is 21. Other children are Lucinda 23 (A Lucinda Jerard 45 is living next to them and in between the Hogmire family.) Samuel 19, Betsey 17, Mitchel J. 9, Rebecca J. 1. Also on the page before the SMILEYS there is another HOGMIRE family; Samuel 66 also born in Maryland with 11 children ranging in age from 2-30..all born in NY except for Elizabeth who is 30 and born in Maryland. Because of the 36 yrs in age difference, I assume this is his daughter and not his wife. If she is not his wife, then he must be widowed. 1860 census may verify this. (Also a Lucinda 6 yrs old) They are listed between KELLOGG families..possibly related? I looked for other SMILEY families in Livingston and didn't find any.
