Surnames: Aldrich,Dunn,Abbot Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iRB.2ACE/2760 Message Board Post: These are not my relatives, but has a lot of interesting history. It came from the history of Lapeer,Genesee, and Tuscola Counties in Michigan. Your welcome, Colleen ALMON L. ALDRICH. The capable editor of the Flint tri-weekly Globe, is he whose name appears above, and who has done excellent work. Mr. Aldrich was born in Springwater, Livingston County, N. Y., March 10, 1833. He is the son of Alvin B. and Elizabeth (Dunn) Aldrich. The former was a native of Wayne County, N. Y., and was born in 1810. Our subject's grandsire, Leonard Aldrich, was a native of Massachusetts, and a descendant of George Aldrich, an English gentleman who settled in Braintree, the old Bay State, In 1648, and he was the originator of the Aldrich family in America. A native of Massachusetts, our subject's paternal grandfather was an early settler in Wayne County, N. Y., and there died. In that place also was our subject's immediate progenitor born, and later located in Springwater township, Livingston County, in the same State where he began farming. On the failure of his health, however, he returned to his native place and there died in 1841. His wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Dunn, and who was born in Manlius, Onondaga Count, was the daughter of Jacob Dunn, an early settler in that county, but a native of New Jersey. He served in the War of 1812, and later resided in Wayne County, and then to Allegany county, where his decease occurred. He was of Irish ancestry. The mother of our subject died in Allegany County, N. Y., in 1871. She reared her children in the religious faith of the family, which was that of the Presbyterians. There were four little ones and of these our subject is the second eldest. He was read in Livingston county, N. Y., until the spring of 1841; he then returned to Wayne County, and later was engaged on a farm in Rushford, Allegany County, where he remained until nineteen years of age. During that time he had the advantage offered by a district school and two terms at Rushford Academy. On finishing his course he began teaching in order to accumulate enough money to take him through the academy in preparation for the University of Michigan. During his academical course Mr. Aldrich associated with men who have since distinguished themselves in various lines. He was a classmate of Lieut.-Gov. Pond, of Wisconsin, and also of Senator H. M. Teller, of Colorado. He had a four-years' course at Rushford and taught for one year in the academy. The following year he was employed as Principal of the Cuba (N. Y.) schools, and in the fall of the same year came to Berrien Springs, Mich., and served as Principal of the High School for one year. In the fall of 1857 he entered the Sophomore class of the University of Michigan, devoting himself to the scientific course. On graduating, in1860, he received the degree of Bachelor of Science, and in 1869 the degree of Master of Science was added to his honors. After graduation, he taught for one year at St. Joe. And then located on a farm in Hamilton Township, Van Buren County Engaged at the same time in teaching and farming, Mr. Aldrich was also proprietor and editor of the St. Joe Traveler. He continued its publication until June, 1869, when he sold it, and coming to Flint, purchased the Globe, to which he has since give his time and attention. The first copy of the Globe appeared in 1866, it projectors being Robert and Charles Smith and Henry Hilton. It was a large folio, issued as a weekly, which our subject continued until 1886, when he changed it to a tri-weekly. It is now a seven-column folio, devoted to the interests of the community and county. It is Republican in politics, and voices truthfully the predominant sentiments of the party which it represents. Aside from the publication of this journal he has the leading job printing trade in the city. The work is carried on and the offices are located in a substantial brick block on Kearsley Street. the presses are run by water-power. Mr. Aldrich has a beautiful home located on Court Street, No. 606. The residence was built at a cost of $10,000. The home is pleasingly presided over by Mrs. Aldrich, who is a lady of striking attractions and pleasing manners. They were married June 28, 1`860m at Battle Creek, the lady being in her maiden days Miss Dency A. Abbott. She was born at Cuba, Allegany county, N. Y., and ia a daughter of Solomon S. Abbott, a prominent farmer of that place, who now resides in Van Buren County, this State. Mrs. Aldrich was educated in part in Lima College and was graduated from Rushford Academy the same year as her husband; she is an intelligent and well-informed lady. Three children have come to them: Fred A., a member of the Flint Road Cart company of this! city; Ralph L., who was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, and is now an attorney of Flint, but has recently been appointed Attorney of a large corporation in Detroit, and will remove there January 1, 1892; and Maude E., who is an artist, having enjoyed the best advantage at Cooper Institute, N. Y., and also studied under excellent artist at Memphis, Tenn. Our subject served for a time as Trustee of the Michigan School for the Deaf, dumb and Blind, his term extending from 1873 to 1881. During his term the blind school was established at Lansing. While in St. Joe, he served as Alderman for two years, and at Decatur was School Inspector. He and his wife are members of the Episcopal Church. In politics he is a stanch Republican, and influential in the ranks of his party.

IT CAME FROM THE HISTORY OF LAPEER,GENESEE, AND TUSCOLA COUNTIES IN MICHIGAN. COLLEEN MANSON P. PERRY. Money and humane interest in one’s fellow-being will procure for the sick attendance. Interested motives may be worked upon to procure many of the good things of life, but only love gives freely of the best that it has. The biographical sketch given below, in which is chronicled salient features in the life history of one now deceased by his widow with loving instinct to preserve a record for his children and friends that cannot but interest them. Manson P. Perry was born in Avon, N.Y., October 23, 1825. He was a son of Edmund and Mery (Martin) Perry, and when an infant in arms was brought by his parents in 1826, to Genesee County, Mich. The Perry family settled upon the farm that the widow of our subject now owns and were among the first pioneers to open up a way to the West and to locate in Grand Blanc Township. Manson P. Perry was the youngest son of Edmund Perry and he was here reared to manhood, gaining a sturdy independence amid the scenes of early settlements. Life was hard at that time and pleasure was dearly purchased, but was all the more enjoyed because of this. As he grew to manhood he gave his father a great deal of assistance in the development of the farm and took his place among the enterprising young men of the locality. As a lad he received a good common-school education. Mr. Perry was a man of excellent judgment, having a large fund of common sense. He remained on a farm until his death, which occurred June 22, 1887. He was highly respected by all who knew him. Aware of the power that the schools are to be in the economical issues of the future, he was an advocated for every advantage that general education could offer to the citizens of the United States. He was a staunch supporter of the Republican party and a co-worker with every clause that promised to be of advantage to the locality in which he lived. Mr. Perry was instrumental in getting the railroad through the village of Grand Blanc, which is of inestimable value to the farmers about the locality. He was enterprising and public spirited, having great force and energy of character. The marriage of Mr. Perry to Mary P. Fairchild occurred March 23, 1848. Mrs. Perry is now a resident of the farm of which her husband made her mistress. In comprises one hundred and eight-two acres of land which is excellently cultivated. The widow is one of the representative pioneer women of Grand Blanc Township. She is a native of Buffalo, N.Y., where she was born September 17, 1826. She is a daughter of Nathaniel and Harriet (Hughes) Fairchild, her father being a native of New Jersey and the mother of New Hamsphire. The paternal ancestors were said to have come from Scotland. Mr. Perry was reared in her native country and State where she remained unto 1837. She was then in her twelfth year, when with her parents she emigrated to this State and located in Genesee County, coming via the lakes to Detroit and form the latter city south by wagon to Genesee County. The Fairchild family settled in Atlas Township, where they were among the first settlers. Her father located on a portion of the present site of the village of Goodrich and took up eighty acres of Government land, paying for it $1.25 per acre. The erected a log cabin and began the work of clearing place being content to live in pioneer style. Her father died in 1854 and the mother passed away in 1874. They were the parents of five children, four of whom live at the present time. Sarah A., who is the wife of D. T. Hartwell of Hadley, next came Mrs. Perry; then Elizabeth who is not the widow of D. C. Davison of Flint; and Nathan M. who lives in East Saginaw. Mrs. Perry was reared to maturity in Atlas Township and received a good common-school education. For several years after completing her course she was engaged in teaching school, her experience in this direction dating from seventeen years of age. Since her marriage and during her husband’s life, she was his efficient helpmate and counselor. She is now in the prime of life and is thoroughly fitted to enjoy the comforts with which she is amply provided. She is well known for the gracious hospitality that she dispenses in her beautiful rural home.
