Livingston county was formed in 1821, and the 1820 census of Ontario shows an Isaac KESER. The story goes... Death accursed due to a shooting incident with the previous owner of Mr. Evans new farm in New York. Apparantly, the previous owner had foreclosed on the farm, and lost it to the bank, who then sold it to Mr. Evans. After his death, the large family was split up, and Sarah was adopted by the Kaisers as their only child. The Kaisers were very well-to-do and Sarah had a good life. The records I have state that Sarah was raised in "Kaiserville, NY" but I can find no evidence to support that a town ever existed by that name. Sarah grew up to marry John Horatio Lawrence, the apprentice of Mr. Kaiser. They eventually moved to Nebraska and raised their family in Colfax County. John Lawrence served in the English army before immigrating to the U.S., and then fought in the Revolutionary War against England. Any information on how to prove any of this would be very helpful. I have hit a huge brick wall on Sarah Evans, and would love to be able to knock it down! Thank you! Jen Baldwin

Hi everyone, especially all who responded to my query about Nunda station. I had thought it would be unlikely to have anything to do with railways, so there I was wrong. How familiar your stories sound. As a child I lived in a thriving seaside town in Norfolk (UK) which had it`s rail line axed by the infamous Dr. Beeching. When I returned there some years later the large hotel had been demolished, as had the railway station and bridge, the local swimming pool, and the street I used to live in, very sad. My next task is to order some films on Nunda from the local LDS library, there are quite a few about naturalization records etc. I can probably work something out for myself but if anyone would care to suggest what I might start out with, it would be much appreciated. I shall stay subscribed to this list and see what other useful info; I may pick up along the way, I may yet discover that the person on the Nunda Censuses is my missing g-g-grandfather. Thank you all once again. Cheers from Ruth on a lovely spring day in Adelaide. researching:- FRAMINGHAM, anywhere. GREENGRASS, Norfolk. SINCLAIR, Sunderland, Co; Durham & Banff, Scotland. G`day, from South Australia. This is my first message to the list and also first American enquiry. I recently found a person of the same name as my g-g-grandfather (Hendry or Henry FRAMINGHAM) on the 1850 Census for Nunda Station. On the Census he has a 4 year old born in England, so this fits in nicely with his last appearance in UK records that I can find in 1844. He was widowed that year and his two children from that marraige are in the workhouse in Norfolk, UK in 1851, no sign of their surviving parent. My main query at this stage is; can someone please explain what the word `Station` means after Nunda. Here in Australia it means the same as Ranch in the US. Look forward to hearing from my new list. cheers from Ruth in Adelaide( formerly Norfolk, UK.) researching:- FRAMINGHAM, anywhere. GREENGRASS, Norfolk. Hi Ruth, Nunda Station (which later had its name changed to Dalton) was located 3 miles south of the Village of Nunda. It was called Station because it was the location of the Erie Railroad station (in 1852). Business immediately sprang up and it was a thriving community for many years. Now it is a small hamlet. Trains still go through, but do not stop.' Regards Doug Morgan Livingston County Historical Society Ruth Johnson wrote: >G`day, > from South Australia. Searching for a William Wood (wife Sarah (Sally)) in Lima, Livingston County in 1820. William passed in 1848, Sally in 1878.
I'm thinking it was called Nunda Station because it was a shipping and transportation spot, a center for business and trade. Genesee Valley canal and the railroad station stop was there. Because stations shipped goods as well as people thriving communites would spring up. You see the word station used a lot across NY in those days. My town of Alabama, NY had two stations. Alabama Station (now the hamlet of Basom) and Smithville Station (now the hamlet of South Alabama.) No train through my town anymore though, which killed the activity there when it stopped running. The death of the railroad and the canals in NY as an important means of transportation killed a lot of our little communities as major hub-bubs. Now if the train is still running through smaller towns they just zoom by and don't stop. Although many communites are revitalizing their canal areas as tourist attractions. --- Ruth Johnson <[email protected]> wrote: > G`day, > from South Australia.
