Hi Sherry Guess I had a SR moment it was George. My mistake. But I can still see him riding his Bike to Lowville everyday. All kinds of weather. Were you the Jacunski Family who had the farm at the corner of road when he decided to "fly"? George was an inventor to boot. I believe that Mrs Jacunski was a schoolteacher at Lowville. I think it was his brother if my memory is correct. I was just a little girl at that time. He had his leanto just a short distance from the barn. We used to walk down there with my stepfather. I remember begging him to take us down to see George. He had furs to keep warm by. Lived off the land. "The Tug Hill Hermit" and a legend in its own he was. But many friends he had. He was known throughout the county. The winters were pretty rough in those days and how he managed to survive one cannot truly imagine. They talk about the Adirondack Hermits but George was just as famous. The Prison Camp was across the road (a little ways up) and I remember we even used to visit the prisioners. Guess they were running a CC Camp like prison there during WW2. My mother was Elizabeth Moore "Betty" and she was married to Arthur C Moore. She is 94 now. Our hunting lodge was just up the road toward the Augustine Farm and at one time we had the saw mill just across from George's brothers farm. We spent summers up there. Had our riding horses and really had a great time. Picking wild strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Not to mention the beaver dams along the way. Yes, we sometimes had a bear at night in the yard. I took a ride up there two years ago but it is nothing like it used to be. We always stopped at the General Store that Dr Barnes mother had. Everything from Groceries to Barn Boots. Dr Barnes became my Dr and saved my life in Houseville when I was in Jr High and his wife was my school nurse at the 1 room school house I attended in Houseville. The Barnes family were pioneers of that area. I wish I had been older and wiser and could of taken more notes of this memories at that time. Do you live in Lewis County now? I get there once a year from Florida and a bit of Lewis County is always in my heart. So great to hear from you. Warm Regards Pat R
