Does anyone have a source for determining the name origins of towns in NYS, even Lewis County? For example, there is a village in or near Lewis County by the name of Lorraine. Is it named after a person, the Lorraine region in France, or something else? Ken in NJ and Fred Mumpton
Ken, There is a genealogy book in the Lowville Library that has some of the name descriptions. I remember reading about how Kirshnerville received its name! I won't be getting up that way until the snow melts....... If you would like I will look for you then. Sorry i cannot remember the name. But it was in their genealogy section. I hope this helps a bit, I would love to hear others reponses!
