Lorraine is not in Lewis County; it is in Jefferson County. It was originally called Malta in 1804, but the name was changed in 1808 to Lorraine since there was already a Malta in Saratoga Co. and they wanted to avoid confusion. Hough's 1854 History of Jefferson doesn't tell why the name Lorraine was chosen. J. C.
