Greetings All: I have been searching for Pauline (aka Appoline in France) Everard and her husband Anton (Antoine in France) who married in Nitting, France. Their gravestone is in about the second row to the right as you enter St. Stephen's Cemetery in Croghan but it doesn't lead us any closer to finding much more about them except for a few births at the St. Stephen's Rectory. They did have several children during the 1850s and the spouses were named Eugenii and Pauline Gerard. (Antoine's middle name was Eugene in France so we are reasonably sure this is the couple connected to me. My great grandfather, Christopher Everard and another relative were the godparents. Here are the dates of birth of two of their children: Philomena Gerard; b. March l6, l854 Alphonsus Gerard; b. May 11, 1856 There might have been additional children because I lacked time to finish the search. Also, the records beyond about 1859 are for all practical purposes unreadable. Given that there were other Gerard families in Lewis County and that the two children above are apparently females (?), tracing the family is more difficult. People on this list have suggested there was a Dr. Gerard in Lowville who as some have said was a baby doctor may not be related at all, but I don't know that for certain. One such couple's names are Ludogius (?) and Maria Gerard. There is also a James Gerard whose cemetery appears next to my Gerard ancestors at St. Stephen's cemetery but no records have surfaced except for Charles Shaw's listing in his Civil War book. Antoine (Anton) Gerard apparently both served in the Civil War as is indicated on their two stones. James is probably related but how I don't know. The purpose for sharing this information with you is to seek search suggestions. My evidence suggests that my Gerard ancestors first lived in the township of New Bremen nearly next to my great grandfather. Later the record shows him to be in the Croghan township. Where I don't know. Last time up to Lewis I tried contacting the New Bremen town clerk for tax records to get a fix on a possible Croghan location but she doesn't have the old records. Does anyone know where that location would be. The genealogy section at the county Court House in Lowville said they were in the town clerks' offices. Someone else said they were in the town clerk's office. Can anyone straighten that out? I have requested from the NYS Health Department in Albany the death records for my ancestors. That was two months ago. Their time frame is six months! According to the cemetery stones and those listed on the Lewis Rootsweb site, my great great aunt Pauline (Appoline on the stone) Gerard died about Nov. 1, l898, and her husband Anton Gerard May 3, l904. He was in Co. C 45 Reg. Wiscin, Vol. On another point does anyone know if the Watertown Times will provide the obituaries of ancestors? Nearly two years ago I requested other information and got most of it but they would not provide obituaries for my great grandparents without a death record to show that I was related. If it is published, should not everyone have access to obituaries without authentication of relationship? I now have the death certificates and will request them but will not be able to get my great aunt and uncle's, which would tell me a great of information that seemingly is now otherwise unavailable. If anyone has a Gerard connection, I would very much like to hear from you about the possible connection. Any help at all would be very much appreciated. Ken
