Hi Irene In Lewis County there was Horatio Hough and Lydia Crandall Hough who owned a farm just about half way between Houseville and Martinsburg where there was a Cave. I remember going there, when I went to the one room schoolhouse in Houseville my teacher Mrs Florence Morgan used to take us on some interesting e local field trips and one of them was to see where the cave was. It was part of our History lesson. I found this very exciting at that time. The farm is marked today with a National Historic Marker the first for Lewis County it was marked on 10/13/1931. Check out the "History of the State of New York" edited by A C Flick and other Lewis County History Books by Hough and Bowen. We lived in Houseville at the farm then and we had an intersting homestead and I often wondered if that was also a hiding place for the slaves. The front bedroom upstairs going across the entire front of the house had a hugh walkin closet and one day while playing we discovered a secret panel in the back of the closet. If you went to the back of the closet and pushed the wall just right another small room was in back of that closet. It must have served some purpose. Someday when I am up north I am going to research the land records on that old homestead and see who owned it at that time. The home has since burned down (an arson fire when the person who purchased it could not finish paying for it.). That secret room has always baffled me. There are several other NYS State Sites such as the Gen. Northrup home in Lowville NY, some hiding spots in Denmark NY (Lewis County), the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn NY, The John Brown Farm (Historic Site) in Lake Placid whre Dr John Brown if buried having been killed in the raid on Harpers Ferry. The Garret Smith Estate and Land Office which was in Peterboro in Madison County NY (Open to the Public). There is a Map outling the Freedom Trail. http://www.nyhistory.com/ugrr/map.htm Also for some interesting points you might want to visit the following Sites.
