    1. [NYLEWIS] RE: Civil Air Patrol and the Ground Observation Corps
    2. Hi Lewis Listers The Civil Air Patrol and the Ground Observation Corps were two different groups. The Civil Air Patrol is still in operation today. The GOC was in operation during WW2 and disbanded in 1944. It started up again about 1951 and disbanded the 2nd time in or about 1957 or the late 50's. . The GOC was used when our radar system was not as sophisticated as it is today and the members would check for suspicious aircraft flying in their local area. In 1952 it big observation was to spot UFO sightings. Records for the GOC would be under the Civil Defense Dept and it might be difficult to get records. The Civil Air Patrol however was under the supervision of the Army Air military and records might be available through your state archives. For anyone seeking information as to which of these units was active in Lewis County I would go to the New York State Newspaper Project (for Lewis Co) seek your local papers at that time (The Journal was out there and the Black River Democrat until 1943 followed by the Lowville Leader until 1953 ). Obtain a Microfilm for that time period and I am sure that there will be articles referring to either the Civil Air Patrol or the GOC. Since the Army was located near by I felt it might be the Civil Air Patrol, but that is only a guess. But perhaps someone older than I (there must be a couple people up in Lewis Co older than I) would remember exactly which of these Units was active. I would ask my mother who worked with Bowen on the last History, but she has been seriously ill. Regards Pat R
