    2. What is interesting to me is how good the kids are doing that are being trained at home. You have to start wondering, what does all that college education do for our teachers and how much special training does one need to teach. If our kids can do so good, with people that in many cases did not graduate from college and with limited assets to help educate, such as books supplied by the state, labortories, etc. And that ignores the special training that many of our teachers get in addition to the undergraduate degree. Of course, some have masters and beyond. Yet, all this seems necessary and the teacher pay is based on how many degrees one has in education. Has our school system missed something? Of course, schools are not allowed to pray, that would be demeaning to some that might not believe in God. Of my goodness!! She is a certified beautician in 3 states, an 18 wheel Truck driver for about a year with her second husband, After divorcing him with the then 2 teenagers she has home schooled them while, studied for herself to become a home health care worker on the road. 3. I am very sorry to hear about Louis Mihalyi & Charles Shaw. I'm sure they will be missed by many. My Dad attended General Martin High School in Glenfield also. I can remember the days we used to dance the Polka at the Hungarian American Hall in Greig NY. My Dad could dance to every kind of music there is! I miss that so much! 3. Rich, Yes, it's about 25 miles away from where we live. I worked at Ormond Memorial Hospital for quite a few years, doing Insurance billing on Computers (for Flager Beach Hospital, Peninsula Hospital, West Volusia Memorial, & Fish Memorial Hospitals as well). I miss it today, but there comes a time when you just can't work anymore. However, I don't miss the drive back & forth. Did she work in the medical field? 1. Re: [NYLEWIS] With a connection to Lewis County History
    2. Hi Ken and All I just wanted to mention that recently Lewis County lost a very interesting and talented resident who devoted his spare time writing some wonderful articles for the Farm & Garden section of the Watertown Daily Times (since 1980). These articles covered many various subjects regarding Lewis County, from its History, to gardening, its wild creatures and birds. Some additional writings of Louis Mihalyi were included in past editions of The Journal the publication of the Lewis County Historical Society. Louis was also the author of "Nature, Nurture and Nostalgia and later "More of Nature, Nurture and Nostalgia Gleaned from Black River Journal". If one has not read some of his works you missed out on some wonderful and interesting writings. Louis Mihalyi who was a former teacher at South Lewis High School in Turin. I never had Louis as a teacher, but did have his wife Bernice Jones Mihalyi as a teacher at General Martin High School in Glenfield NY. Both Louis and his wife Bernice were graduates of General Martin High School (my high school alma mater). Another interesting fact about about the Mihalyi Surname was that the father of Louis Mihalyi, Charles Z. Mihalyi was one of Lewis County's early Hungarian immigrants and associated with the Hungarian American Hall in Greig NY which was home to the Grape Festival. What a wonderful time one had dancing to the Polka at the old Hungarian Hall and looking forward to next years Grape Festival. I recall many fond memories of attending this Festival. Another lost era of Lewis County History. The mother of Louis was from Croghan NY the former Mildred Betz. We have had two recent losses of people who contributed to the writings of Lewis County New York. We recently lost Charles Shaw the author of "Where Brave Men Sleep" and who also was a subscriber to the Lewis County Mailing List. Charles was noted for his Civil War study and research. If one has not read the writings of these two talented Lewis County men, you certainly should consider doing such. Regards Pat R
