Your post is of interest to me because I had wondered if I had an ancestor (Frederick Fox) who might have been involved in the gold rush. He is not in the 1850 census, yet his wife and family are. Then he reappears in later census living with a son. Do you have a source for the names of the 50 who went? I had a family that went west, but never made it to California. They stayed in Kansas for a while and ended up in Trinidad, Colorado. oops......sound like they will be put somewhere.... but they will not be part of the cemetery- thought they said on the local news that they would 'get rid of them' which meant destroy to me.... Anyone know if donations for repairs can be sent somewhere? I wonder if they could get summer youth employment students to do some of the work? There is a fairly large cemetery of just Collins in West Turin. If you go to Potters Corners, turn towards Constableville and go up past where the road from Turin comes across and take the next left turn, which is only about 200 yards past where the road from 'Turin comes across, you will come to the Collins Cemetery. It is on the left hand side, set back about 500 yards from the road, up on a small hill. It has a number of large tombstones, all Collins and their relations. He attended the common schools at Collinsville, and Whitestown Seminary, N.Y. He began his business career by teaching school, after which he manufacured butter and cheese. He then engaged in the manufacture of agricultural implements and in addition to this bought large quantities of potatoes, wich he sent to New York, having four or five canal boats for that purpose. She had a daughter on 18 April 1940 at Saranac Lake, NY, name unknown. She also had a son Robert O. Barnum, Jr.dob unknown. Hi Fran >From 1847 until 1850 NYS had a law that left it up to the School to collect Vital Record information on all families. However it was never really enforced and the Law was dropped from the books after 1850. The records collected were limited and many were lost. The Court House has a few but not very many. I have these records (from the Card Index at the Court House) and will check for the Surnames. However they don't look familar and I do research on Robins/Robbins (from Canada-formerly Mohawk Valley) and do not recall any being listed. The next Law for Vitals was 1880 and there again a some vitals missed the record book and some communities were not collecting them as they should until after 1900. For the period you are looking for Church Baptismal Records might be a source to consider. I have found a number of mine by searching them. Some records have been filmed by the LDS and the Microfilms can be ordered from their Family History Centers (nearest you)> Another source is Old Newspapers and you might want to check North Country Library System "Historical Newspapers". for a marriage or Obit record. Hello List, I am trying to find documented proof that John M. Lewis married Nancy Celestia Robbins. According to information I have, they were married in Lewis County on 20 Dec 1869. According to Everton's Handybook, Lewis County Clerk has incomplete marriage records from 1847. Could someone tell me if marriage records for the 1869 time period are available? Thanks, Fran
Letha - if you are referring to a book written by F. Hough, that book can be accessed and read by using your library card, via Heritage Quest, a service at many libraries. Also, do you have "google" search engine service? Open google and click on "more" in the menu, then click books, and use 'search' for Lewis County History, maybe add the name 'Hough'. I have read many chapters that way. Need more help - just ask for it here. Good luck. Johnson
I'm Cretan,Letha, that someone will respond. May I ask who any of your ancestors are in what districts in which lived? My ancestors were Everards but with marriages the genealogy lines begin to enlarge so you need to work you way backwards until you begin and find the begotten ones that once existed nearby or came from other states and nations. I'm not hooked to your ancestors but I do not know that for certain. Note that others may have a closer answer than mine. Good luck to you.
