    3. Hi Dick It is difficult to say what you would or would not find. The web site gives one information or clues to follow, but it is only transcriptions of the original records and many times does not state the source that the information came from. Transcriptions are not acceptable to submit with lineage applications that I work on and therefore one need to seek the actual record or find the proof document to submit with these applications for approval. There were some old books located at the Society and also microfilms of the old Lewis County Newspapers. Over the years some of the valuable material that was in files when the Historian office was located in the Court House seems to have disappeared. Thngs that I remember many years ago no longer are there. I do know that the real old Tax Record Books have been microfilmed (but not too legible) and those records along with some old court records are in a storage building used by the Court House. However it is always difficult to get access to them or view them and I always hope that some day they will become available for the public to see and use. I was told that I could not get a copy as they do not a copier located at the storage building. Since they are able to be carried over to the Court House where they do have a copier one should be able to obtain a copy. These Tax books are public information and therefore should be available to the public. 3. I just talked to Lisa, the Historian. She said that they are in the process of repairs to the building and it may be a few weeks before we can use the library. We have to call her first the day before and hope that on the next day it will be possible to get into the building to do research. Normally, the days opened are Tues, Wed., and Thurs. Call first for an update on whether the library will be open. It will not be open next week. Deanna

    3. Thank you. I'm very disappointed in that as the rule is only one book at a time. When I was there last, the one book policy was very frustrating. There was 3 people doing research. As another wowman and I sat, and sat, and sat after we had looked at the first book, there was a gentleman on the microfilm reading have a problem and needed assistance. Nothing is open shelf anymore. We can see nothing. Filing cabinets are pushed up near the shelves so you can't see what's there, nor can you touch them. The room is so dully lighted that I had to go over to the window to find my eyeglasses in my purse. Maybe a miracle has happened. 1. [NYLEWIS] more 49'er surnames-Phillips& Rice
    2. Charmaine
    3. Phillips and Rice are the two names on Lewis county website Lowville newspaper that went to Trinity. And I think it was also a Phillips mentioned in regard to the town of Lewiston, and B. F. Lewis.

    1. [NYLEWIS] 49'er SURNAME information -from researcher in California
    2. Charmaine
    3. Here is some information sent from Susan who is researching the Lewis County people who went west to California during the gold rush- If you have any connections to the surnames mentioned please let us know!!!!!!! Sounds like they made an impact there! The only source I have is Franklin B. Hough's 1860 A history of Lewis county in the state of New York" page 296 which states that there were two mining companies The Lewis County Mining Association and the Lewis County Mining Co. At first it doesn't read like there were very many but if you keep ready he says about 50. I would love to find documents from these two mining companies-they should be filed somewhere as business records often are filed in multiple places. I can't seem to find the names right now but in the Lowville newspaper archives were the names of two men, possibly 3 who went to Ca. returned to Lewis Co. married and then returned to the Trinity area. Because of this I suspect the mining companies went to Trinity As I mentioned there is even a town Lewiston in the Trinity area started by a B. F. Lewis whose roots are difficult to follow but there is also a Phillips and an Allen, can't remember but I think someone also from NY. Other people to look at are Seth Miller, there was an article that he was an argonaut. My Martha Miller related to Seth Miller. Hough states a John Ives went west and died in CA page 228. What is really interesting about John Ives is a possible relationship to early western explorer Joseph Christmas Ives. It remains unproven but suspected that there is a relationship between the two through Levi Silliman Ives. Levi mentions Joseph in his will. Levi is related to John. It also looks like Joseph Christmas Ives lived for a time in Lowville, attending the college- I think but I can't find the source. Joseph Christmas Ives is the discoverer of the Grand Canyon and came into Northern CA. You might be able to verify if he ever resided in Lowville. My Martha Miller has an aunt Ives. Also if I remember correctly Joseph Ives or someone he was with was credited with a steamship, and the steamships were first designed in the same port area in CT that many of Lewis county is originated from.(haven't looked at that in while so don't take it as gospel) Another name to watch for is Caleb Lyon in Hough's 1860 book on page 109. He was obviously of importance to CA. He also was educated at Lowville. He also went into the Northern CA area near the Napa, Sonoma, Santa Rosa area, I think. Healdsburg was kind of the the retirement area for miners and wagon train captains. Andrew W. Doig page 154 Issac Foster and Grace Parsons Foster page 230 George Gary missionary to Oregon in 1844 page 282 I have a map of 1870's Dry Creek, Alexander Valley near Healdsburg. Here are some of the names of farmers, Bradford, Ward, Thayer, Bassett, Boyd, Black, Vaughn, Varney, Bell, Ferguson, Grundy, Norton, Allen, Barney. Some names from town are Fitch, Bailhache, Grant, Doty, Norton, Matheson, Bennett, Ripley, Le Baron, Henry, Baker, Sargent, Rogers, Phelps, and Bush. The head of the wine association was a Wetmore. The map was made by a Houghton. I don't know which of these are coincidental and which may actually link to Lewis,NY. I am only positive of the Bradford, Thayer and probably Bassett families. A lot of the early founders here have incomplete genealogies. Some of these also may go to the CT ports, which is where a lot of Lewis co. folks came from. My Cynthia Parmelee born 1807 CT went from CT, NY, IL, to CA in one lifetime, but many of these are over a generation but still seem to have roots in Lewis. Keep in mind, I'm not saying all of these names have roots in Lewis Co. or came through there but it is certainly intriguing.
