    1. [NYLEWIS] Mount Bay and Londonberry, NY
    2. LINDA GRAHAM
    3. I have found these place names on family histories of people who had links to Lewis County. I can't place them in Lewis county, and the GNIS page have no entries for Mount Bay, and none for Londonberry, but several for Londonderry. This is searching the whole country, not just New York. If any of you can think of a place whose name is something like these, or can suggest a better place to look, I'd be grateful. I know how place AND people names get mixed up as they pass down through families, so I know I may be looking for "someplace else", and I'm open to suggestions! Thanks in advance, Linda in Utah

    1. [NYLEWIS] Rice family in Lewis Co.
    2. Good Morning, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some information on some of my ancestors, mainly my ggrandfather, William Wirt Rice, who along with brothers Blair, and Yale, and also his father, Amos, had built tanneries at Croghan and Jerdon Falls. They also, according to a Great Uncle of mine who did the research some forty years ago, had bought a tannery at Beaver Falls. The company name was W&Y Rice. According to his research, they had built "dwellings, a boarding house, a store and a schoolhouse." This was in Jerdon Falls. I'm curious to know if any buildings remain, and possibly any family from this lineage still in the area. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I would like to visit the area soon. Thanks in advance Peter Rice

    1. [NYLEWIS] marriage announcements
    2. Hi List, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where a marriage announcement would have been published for my Great Great Grandparents. They were married at St. Stephen's in Croghan on Oct. 1, 1864. In St. Stephen's records it states that the marriage was published. My Great Great Grandparents were Peter Back & Catherine Guion. Thank you in advance, Betty Collins

    3. Searching for more information on our recently discovered connection to Clinton BAKER (b. abt. 1870 in New York State--possibly Lewis Cty.) and his wife Marion I. KALER (b. abt 1880 in Lowville). Their children were Francis H. BAKER (b. 1902) and Beatrice BAKER (b. 1914). They are listed in the 1910 census as living in New Bremen. Clinton's older brother Stephen was living with them as well. Any information about this family or ancestors would be appreciated. Thanks, Beth Katona Andrews

    1. [NYLEWIS] Poor House materials
    2. Diane Ryan
    3. I did bid on and win the Lewis Co. Poor House materials. It is not, however, what I expected. It does not list the people who were residents in teh poor house. Instead it contains the business records of the running of the Poor House, bills and receipts to the various suppliers in the area and also bills to the various towns for services rendered to the residents of the towns. I am now trying to decide what is teh best thing to do with it. I have offered it to Linda Crannell, the Poor House lady, but she has not replied to my email as yet, so I do not know if she is interested. It is generally more of historic interest rather than genealogic interest. Diane Ryan

    1. Re: [NYLEWIS] GRISWOLD BAKER BASSETT/BESSETTE BOURBEAU
    2. I have the following BAKER family info. If Minnie's ancestry is French or German (Alsace-Lorraine) and Catholic then perhaps she is a younger sibling of Barbara BAKER. My line of research is Barbara BAKER (1850-1936) married 25 Oct 1870 to Michael CAMPANY at St Stephen RC Church, Croghan,NY. In the church journal the entry spells their names as "Michael Kempeni & Barbara Becker" and does not list their parents. Her obituary states "Mrs. Campany was born in France Feb. 18, 1850 a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christopher BAKER." The 1855 NY state census for Town of Croghan, Lewis County, dwelling # 41, lists Christopher BAKER, age 55, 3 yrs resident, farmer Barbara BAKER age 42 Peter age 22, Margaret age 8, Barbara age 7, Nancy age 2 and Mary age 1 The parents and 3 eldest children born in France, the younger children born in Lewis County. There may have been other children born after the census. I do not know, since I could not find this BAKER family listed in the 1860 Federal census or the 1865 NY state census. I suspect they were living there but I could not find them listed. By 1865 I suspect the eldest son was married and living on his own. The 1865 census lists: Peter BAKER, age 32 born France with Mary, age 30 mother of 4, Margaret age 6, Christopher age 4, Catherine age 2, Mary age 1/12 (1 month) in dwelling # 83, Town of Croghan, 2nd election district. In 1875 NY census lists Christopher BAKER age 75, Barbara age 63, Christina age 23 and Basitian age 17, dwelling # 258, Town of Croghan, 2nd election district.

    1. [NYLEWIS] GRISWOLD BAKER BASSETT/BESSETTE BOURBEAU
    2. Barbara Bassett
    3. Searching for GRISWOLD, Edwin J. born 1854, VT. Found him in Chicopee, MA 1880 census with wife, Minnie J. BAKER b1859, New York state, and 3 children. Family history tells me that they were in Lyondale ? (Lyons Falls?) Lewis NY where he was killed in a papermill accident in 1884 or 94. Am looking for a copy of the death record there for him. I do not have parent names or place of birth for her, but if she was born in NY, it is possible she married there about 1875. I am told that she came back to Chicopee with her children where my grandmother Emma SMITH met her son, Edwin A. and married him in 1902. I met Minnie only once when I was little, was told she lived far away in Detroit. I am guessing she went there with family, a child maybe, and where I assume she was when she died in 1950 as I have not been able to find a death record here in New England. These people seemed to have gone where the mills were. Also searching Joseph BASSETT or BESSETTE supposedly born French Canada 1824, no place yet. He married Julia BOURBEAU about 1847, not sure. One couple bearing these names married in Canada, 1848, a date that is after the birth of the daughter I think is their first child. Several sources say Julia was born Canada, others say NY or Essex, NY. We are trying to find out if she actually was born in NY and if they were married there. She is said to have been born abt 1829. Her death record in Guilford, VT gives her father as Isah BEBEAU and her mother as Bessie <?> If anyone sees these names in their searching, I would appreciate a hello! Thanks, Barbara, in MA

Would you mind looking up my great grandparents' marriage that occurred in June of 1854.
