Greetings Quiet Lewis Souls and a Happy New Year: It is time to start searching our ancestors and their descendants again. One way to get the 2002 ball rolling is to follow the lead of Oneida County's parallel site. A member proposed and many accepted the challenge of having an ancestry roll call. That means your subject line might read as mine will now do: Roll Call: [Best to place names in alphabetical, capitalized list of surnames except I forgot to capitalize!] EVERARD LaCHAUSSE BINTZ TISS (THISSE, THIESSE) MAGRA LINSTRUTH CHARTRAND HANNO FEISTHAMEL MONNET VERNON RONDEAU ZEHR Got the idea? If someone on this list wants to follow through and seek more information because they see a possible connection to any of my names above, they can do so. At that point more detail about a given surname can be exchanged. Let's hope this provides some connections for you and me. Ken Everard (in NJ) everardl@voicenet.com

Happy New Year to All: Seeking info on the couple, Thomas RETAN, b 1846/Canada, who married Emaline HUBBARD, b 1855/Great Bend, Champion, Jefferson Co., NY. They were married in 1873 in Black River. They had two children: Lewis, born 1875, Jefferson Co., and Grace, b 1877, Jefferson Co. I believe Thomas had a sister, Mary Jane RETAN, b 1842/Canada, who married William NOVELL in Watertown, NY in 1859 at the home of William and Tina MCNETT or MINETT. I think that Thomas and Mary Jane may have been orphaned at a young age. Both Emaline and Thomas had been residents of Champion, NY at the time of their marriage in 1873. Sometime after 1880 they moved across the county line to Lewis Co. NY. Thomas died in 1932/Copenhagen, Lewis Co., NY, and Emaline died after 1933 sometime. I know there was a pioneer HUBBARD family in Jefferson Co., brothers Joel and Noahdiah and others, but don't know how Emaline fits into these families. Thanks for any help! Below is a portion of the letter that I sent to the State Coordinator Holly Timm and Assistant Coordinator Martha Magill regarding my retirement from the NYGenWeb System. I share it with you to keep everyone up-to-date. "I have given this a great deal of thought after taking a look at my priorities and accomplishments. I assumed the responsibilities of the Otsego County NYGenWeb site in September 1996 and the Lewis County site a month after that. So, for over five years I have dedicated thousands of hours developing, maintaining and improving the quantity and quality of materials available on the two NYGenWeb sites. It has been a fun trip. I don't regret the time spent in the least. I've met thousands of great people and I have worked with hundreds of great volunteers. However, during these five years, I have put my own genealogy aside to help others. It's now time to get back to my own personal genealogy research and time to let someone else take over. Please accept this note as official notice of my intention to retire as Volunteer Coordinator of both the Otsego and Lewis County NYGenWeb web sites. In order to give you time to line someone up, I am setting the date of February 28 as the effective date of my retirement. I will continue to maintain the two sites and add new material until that date and if the replacements are on-board before that time, I will assist each one to make a smooth transition. If the new coordinator(s) is/are ready to go before that date, I will move the date up to accommodate a speedy switch-over." Interested candidates for the position should be in contact with Holly Timm or Martha Magill. Their addresses can be found on the New York GenWeb Main site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/ Jerry E. Most of the men were either William James or William Joseph, and sometimes there's a disagreement about which name goes in which generation. William James White was supposed to have been born in NY in 1847. He married Catharine Julia Walsh in NY, and that's where the names Mount Bay and Londonberry come in. We think (from really lousy written notes) that the couple were marriedi n Mount Bay, and she may have been from Londonberry. Again, any help wonderful!! Tina, Mohawk Hill is in the township of West Turin. It is located on NY Rte 26 south of Constableville. My wife's great grandparents, John Kampnich and Catherine Claiser were married there in in a double wedding ceremony in 1865. The other couple was John's sister, Catherine Kampnich, and Henry Grunert. Lee Harris
Ooops! Sorry about that. The family that settled in Lewis County were the Hillmans. The ones that "passed through", and for whom these place names are given, were the Whites, who went from NY to IL, to MN, to Clay Center, Kansas. Part of the family went on to Washington State. Quite the travellers! Thanks for the reminder. ----- Original Message ----- From: PNUTREG@cs.com Sent: Friday, November 30, 2001 8:06 PM To: Lindag1947@msn.com Subject: Re: [NYLEWIS] Mount Bay and Londonberry, NY Hi Linda You never mentioned the Surnames of your Ancestors. It is very possible that they had passed through Lewis County prior to their migration elsewhere. Another possible thought is that they had siblings (brothers or sisters) who settled in Lewis County. Perhaps the Surname would give us a clue. So share it with us and we might get a connection. Pat
Does anyone know what township Mohawk Hills is located in? Thanks, Tina
