I think they were called Observers. My father was an Observer in upstate NY (Oneida Co.) as he had 6 children & that was too many children to have to go into the military. He tried. They made him an Observer on the wkends. He went to the Armory in Utica and watched for airplanes. I have his ID card. He had a uniform and was given Observer Wings. The uniform is clear in his ID picture on card. Judi in Seattle, WA. --------------8E394E85C235222B2D11ABFF--
I'm searching for information on the two subject persons who probably lived in the Lowville area around 1900 +/-. Could they be the same person?? I have photographs of them that came from the estate of my great aunt, Lena (Singer) Burkhart (1890-1973) and believe they are relatives. Lena's Father was Frederick Singer and her mother was Margaret (Morse) Singer. She was raised in Greig, attended Lowville Academy, and later lived with her husband Herman Burkhart (1892-1962) on Shady Ave., Lowville for many years. He ran an auto dealership and auto repair business at that location. Photo 1 - Studio photo with "Aunt Barb Wilcox" written on the back by Lena, taken by "EM VanAken , Photographer, over No. 72 State Street, Lowville, NY". She appears to be about 20+ years old in the photo which I would guess was taken in the 1870-80 time frame. Photo 2 - Studio photo with "Belle Wilcox" written on the back by Lena, taken at the "GW Garter's Photographic Art Gallery, Lowville, NY". She appears to be about 10 years old in the photo which I would guess was taken in the 1870 or earlier time frame. Please email me if you have any information on this subject. I will email a copy of these photos on request. Thanks. Dick Singer (born in Lowville in 1933)
To Lowville Listers, particularly, My sister,Barbara[SMITH]Bell graduated from Lowville High School in 1937, We only lived there less than one year-fall 1936 to June 1937--then returned to our 'home county 'of Cortland. Barbara could not afford to buy a yearbook that year. She is having an early May 81st. birthday and I would like to find someone who has a 1937 yearbook who would be willing to do page copies[but not black, ordinary 'ditto' copies].Rather-color copies ,or on the new Kodak machines or by whatever method that will turn out page copies that appear nearest original. The entire book will not be needed -and here is what is wanted: 1.All the Senior pages. 2.Eighth-grade classes 3.Seventh-grade classes 4.One grade class in which is my brother-William/Billy SMITH.I cannot recall which grade but before grade 3 ,I suspect. If you will contact me, I will arrange payment for the pages and for postage in a manner suitable to you.My hope is to have these by early March so that I can include them in a birthday package to this very special sister this year. Barbara has been the Schuyler Co. Historian for 30-some years and was the NYS. Historian of the year one year; had a weekly historical column in the Ithaca Journal-'Glance Backward'-for many years; and continues to devote much time to these kinds of interests which benefit many researchers. Barbara has had a recent serious surgery and is now recuperating at home.If there are members of the Lowville Class of 1937 who remember her who would like to contact her to reminesce--contact me and I will provide an address. She would be very pleased,I think. She lives in Schuyler Co. I live in California. Note:Barbara does not do computer but is a remarkable correspondent. Hi List, I was recently told that my grandmother had put her father in a Nursing home sometime after 1934. He had lived in New Bremen I believe. Could anyone tell me the name of any nursing homes that I might be able to contact? Thanks in advance, Betty Collins

Hi, My cousin was also an airplane spotter during WWII out in Friday Harbor, WA. But she was no teenager. They had lots of people doing it...to prevent another Pearl Harbor. She did not take leadership or morals classes, she had a poster, I believe with pictures of the undersides and front/sides of various enemy planes. Don't know about further info, except that various parts of the military have archives and archivists. Good luck. Barb in Rochester, Minn
Can anyone tell me where Rome Hill is located. My great grandmother's sister was married there. Thanks in advance Betty
Hi Rich After all that I forgot to mention that probably the State of NY Emergency Dept would know where this information is stored. No doubt there is probably a record at the NY Archives somewhere. I should think that the Lewis County Clerks Office would have a record, but I have found very few records located there. Someone told me that much of their is in storage at an undisclosed location , but thats about all I know. With Fort Drum being so close by, I would think that this would be an excellent program for the youth that should be implemented considering what is going on in the world. Regards Pat R
Hello Rich Wow! You are telling your age now <GRIN>. But I think you are talking about the Civil Air Patrol. The Civil Air Patrol was a group made up of Civilians who volunteered their services. They had a youth program that was very active back in that era and it still exists. At least it does in some area's of the US. Very strong here in the South due to the Aero -space program. I am not sure about Lewis County in particular at this time. . The youth group volunteers to help at different events and they learn leadership ability and also moral and ethical traits. A specific program is followed and a friend of mine has a son who is in that honor program. Also the Civil Air Patrol's main purpose is to highly train people to assist in searching for people, after airplane crashes or any other local or national disaster that might be of importance. The Civil Air Patrol became very active after the Sept. 11th bombing. They also look out for any suspicious Aircraft that might be flying in any given area and report it to a given source. Civil Air Patrol has an extensive structured program that they train their volunteers by and also a similar program to train the youth that are teenage to about 21. Regards Pat R
Looking for information: Back in the 1950's I was part of a civil defense unit called "Airplane Spotters". We were a group of teenage kids who upon spotting an Airplane would call a certain telephone number, describe or identify the airplane's features and direction. I assume since we were close to Canada at the time there was worry about attack from the north. Does anyone remember this and could anyone direct where the information could be stored from that time. I heard that the LC Historical Soc. was going to do a re-print but lately they have been busy with all the work thats going into making arrangements for the move to Lowville. When I hear more I can let you know- -Charmaine
Good question, Betty. Maybe some group such as the Lewis County Historical Society or the Croghan library would volunteer to make copies available. Any copyright infringement would no longer exist so copying could be done readily. Perhaps Betty--and especially me--would be willing to pay for the service. On November 20, 2001, I sent the message below to this list. From the query, I believe, a very kind soul responded, privately, with the suggestion that I contact a woman named "Barbara?" and sent me her email address. Right at Christmas, my hard drive crashed just as I was backing up my data (must have been ESP). Consequently, I lost all of my email including my correspondence with Barbara (?). Would the kind soul please write to me again? Hi...I live in what I am told, is the3rd oldest house in existence in Lewis County. Formerly owned by Phisterers, Caprons, and others previous. I am searching for any folks who lived in the area between 1920 and 1960 who might have passed through and taken a photo, or who may have been visitors. go to the website listed to see a current picture. www.westviewfarm.org It is located on East Road between Boonville and Port Leyden and was built sometime around 1840. In the early 1900's it was called "The Maples" for the huge trees that surround the property. I would like to see what it looked like before it's "renovation" in the late 60's. Thanks for any help!
