    3. I am also interested in cemeteries in Turin, as a descendant of Jeduthan Higby (Sr. and Jr.). Jed, Jr. was married to Florenda Regan. It appears he left her and their kids (he was only 17-18 when they married, she was older, about 22) and went to VA where he married Barbara Easter and they had Davis K. Higby. Barbara died then he married Prudence Marple Larue. They had a lot of kids. Jed's last child (#22) was my g-grandmother Adah Belle. The book, "Edward Higby and his Descendants" has Jed, Jr. buried in Turin, but he is not. Grave for Florenda is there, but not his. Anyone out there familiar with this branch of the Higbys? The two Jeds were both preachers, and it has been rumored that it was a church scandal that forced Jed, Jr. to leave town/state/wife and family. Norma Unger

    3. A brick was was at least cracked last week when the NYS Health Department provided the death record for my great grandmother, Anna (Fox) Everard. We learned that her mother, also named Anna, was named Anna (Rouchel) Egloff. Dr. Laurentine Rouchel signed the death certificate. We may be able to assume that Dr. Rouchel and Anna were related with both living in Croghan township. We also know that Dr. Rouchel is buried in the Basselin cemetery in the middle of Croghan. We know from various census reports that there was an Egloff living with my great grandparents, including occasionally one or two female Egloffs. That mystery wall may now be solved but another mystery appears over which some of the members of this list might offer suggestions. Let me explain. Anna (Rouchel) Egloff came from the Grostenquin canton in Lorraine. Her daughter was born in the village of Laning in the same canton. Egloffs also came from there and two Strifes were witnesses at her daughter's birth. Anna (Rouchel) was apparently married to a George Fouchs (Fox) who died before her daughter was born in 1836. I have some serious searching to do to find out whether Anna (Rouchel) Egloff remarried in France or in the USA. Accompanying that there is a need to find more about her Egloff husband. If any list members can offer information about my GG grandmother's marriage to an Egloff in Lewis County or France, it would be most appreciated. Do any of you have Egloff's in your genealogies? I do know two Egloffs who are descendants Nicholas I and II but as of this point they have no information connecting my family with theirs. Ken Everard (in NJ) everardl@voicenet.com

    3. For those of you familiar with the Lewis County probate records at the Court House in Lowville, I am interested in knowing just where such records are kept. Are they all in one place? Also, what are the related documents? What time periods are available? If anyone has experience using the probate records, what advice can you offer for pursuing a search. As I understand it, probate searches are not especially easy if you wish to get a maximum amount of information. Is this "tricky to do" business? Is there anyone available to do such searches for a fee? Ken (in NJ) everardl@voicenet.com

    1. [NYLEWIS] RE: Moore, Pitcher, Pease Early Pioneers of Lewis Co. & Martinsburg NY
    2. Hi Listers "She was a Descendant of Several Early Lewis County Pioneer's" I was saddened having received notice today (here in FL) of the passing of Aunt Mildren Moore Dening of Lowville, Lewis County NY at the age of 102 years and 7 months of age. Aunt Mildred was a remarkable woman and being sharp in mind knew much of the Early Days of Lewis County. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Aunt Mildred was B in Martinsburg, Lewis County Aug 6 1899 the daughter of Clarence Jay Moore and Cora Alice Pitcher (daughter of Leonard and Fanny Pease Pitcher). She taught school in her early years and later married Lyston Dening. She resided her entire life in Various Locations in Lewis County, NY. Her Grandparents were James Duane Moore and Emily Arthur (daughter of Bradford and Rheuma Ela Arthur of Martinsburg). Her G Grandparents were Pioneer Settler Orrin Moore who was B in Simsbury, Conn and his wife Polly Wheeler Moore of Ct who were Pioneer Settlers of the Town of Martinsburg, Lewis County, New York in the late 1790's. Orrin Moore was a descendant of Andrew Moore Early Settler of Windsor CT. Her brother Arthur C. Moore of Martinsburg NY and Former Chairman of the Lewis County Boad of Supervisors died at the Age of 93 on June 21 1989. Regards Pat R

    2. Bill Hansen
    3. I am new to your list and researching the names KARLEN, GEISKOPF, HAVER and related families. David KARLEN indicated in a newspaper interview on his 80th birthday that he came to America from Switzerland in 1868 and settled in an area called Mohawk Hill, New York where his brother already lived. David later moved to the Boonville area in Oneida County. I am trying to determine who his brother was. The KARLENs married into the GEISKOPF and HAVER families and I wondered if they might not also be from the same area. Does someone have access to the 1870 and 1880 census index that could tell me if there are KARLENs living in the Mohawk Hill area? Also, what township is Mohawk Hill in? Any information you can provide about either the Mohawk Hill area or the families would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help. Bill Hansen Ottumwa, Iowa

    1. [NYLEWIS] RE: Civil Air Patrol and the Ground Observation Corps
    2. Hi Lewis Listers The Civil Air Patrol and the Ground Observation Corps were two different groups. The Civil Air Patrol is still in operation today. The GOC was in operation during WW2 and disbanded in 1944. It started up again about 1951 and disbanded the 2nd time in or about 1957 or the late 50's. . The GOC was used when our radar system was not as sophisticated as it is today and the members would check for suspicious aircraft flying in their local area. In 1952 it big observation was to spot UFO sightings. Records for the GOC would be under the Civil Defense Dept and it might be difficult to get records. The Civil Air Patrol however was under the supervision of the Army Air military and records might be available through your state archives. For anyone seeking information as to which of these units was active in Lewis County I would go to the New York State Newspaper Project (for Lewis Co) seek your local papers at that time (The Journal was out there and the Black River Democrat until 1943 followed by the Lowville Leader until 1953 ). Obtain a Microfilm for that time period and I am sure that there will be articles referring to either the Civil Air Patrol or the GOC. Since the Army was located near by I felt it might be the Civil Air Patrol, but that is only a guess. But perhaps someone older than I (there must be a couple people up in Lewis Co older than I) would remember exactly which of these Units was active. I would ask my mother who worked with Bowen on the last History, but she has been seriously ill. Regards Pat R
