At the beginning of the revolutionary war, local "Committees of Safety" were formed to identify loyalists in the community. People were asked to sign these pledges, usually agreeing to defend the community against possible British attack, in order to find out where their loyalties lay. It was a grim, Gestapo-like process in which one could not remain neutral. Greetings All Thank you from Fred Mumpton and me for offering ideas for the source of the village name of Lorraine in Jefferson County. I placed an equivalent question on the Alsace-Lorraine talk list and below you will find the answer to the two eastern regions in France that is the source of many immigrants to the north country. Enjoy. Lorraine is not in Lewis County; it is in Jefferson County. It was originally called Malta in 1804, but the name was changed in 1808 to Lorraine since there was already a Malta in Saratoga Co. and they wanted to avoid confusion. Hough's 1854 History of Jefferson doesn't tell why the name Lorraine was chosen. J. C.
Ken, There is a genealogy book in the Lowville Library that has some of the name descriptions. I remember reading about how Kirshnerville received its name! I won't be getting up that way until the snow melts....... If you would like I will look for you then. Sorry i cannot remember the name. But it was in their genealogy section. I hope this helps a bit, I would love to hear others reponses!
