Dear Dick, Thank you and Dave for your information and suggestions. One Lewis Co. lister, Caroline Virkler ,had an address for Jo[FOWLER]FARNEY living in Croghan and I shall write to her asap. Caroline thinks that the other sister may have deceased. Well, Jo will let me know about that. I was interested in the Wolfe's camp at Chase Lake. Later, the College at Cortland [which I attended ]acquired such a camp on Raquette Lake. I have seen many pictures over the years as it was developed for student uses. Those old camps in the Adirondacks-especially the larger ones developed for commercial use--were quite spectacular weren't they? New York State is one of the most beautiful of our states. For over 20 years I was an Air Force wife traveling and living many places including Germany and Labrador. Until coming to live in CA. in the 1960's--I had not seen any place that equalled NYS. Thanks again. Charlotte J.Sheldon NYLEWIS-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Part 1.1Type: message/rfc822 > > Part 1.2Type: message/rfc822
Response to CJ Sheldon message: I'm not sure this will help any but my mother, Eleanor (Hubatsek) Singer, b.1910, d. 1971) worked for this Fowler family for room and board in the 1928 time frame while attending Lowville Academy (High School). She took care of the children and probably did other household chores. My brother Dave may recall further info, I'll copy him on this. Did you try an online phone number search? One of them might be unmarried and use the Fowler name, or you might find a relative in the Lowville area who knows about them. Dick Singer CJ Sheldon message: Does anyone know of a FOWLER family in Lowville in the 1930's and 1940's. Mr.FOWLER managed a hardware store on the main street[?State Street?]. After having gone to beautiful and historic Savannah and then to Florida for a family reunion over the last two weeks, we stopped at Andersonville, Georgia, to visit the infamous Civil War prison camp in which thousands of northern troops were imprisoned. The grounds are well maintained and include examples of what the prison was like. The cemetery is very large and holds thousands of soldiers with a large number of gravestones that read "unknown." In case any of your ancestors were buried here you may wish to see the names of the deceased at this site: www.maconcountyga.org. Ken (in NJ)

LOWVILLE ACADEMY One Hundred and Nine Graduates in Eighteen Years and Eighty During the Past Ten Years. In the communication having reference to the academy, written by Mr. Abial B. SHELDON and published in our last issue, the writer had more particular reference to the prosperity of the institution during the earlier years of Prof. ADAMS' administration. We have thought that it might interest the friends of the academy to know more definitely what has been accomplished since Prof. ADAMS returned to his work at the academy in 1874. During the academic year ending July, 1875, the course prescribed for graduation was recast and made to conform more prefectly to the course prescribed by the regents of the university. Since that time, it has been required as a condition of graduation from the academy, that the student should have completed the prescribed course of study and have secured the regents' academic diploma. During the last eighteen years of Prof. ADAMS' administration, there have been graduated from the academy, under the conditions mentioned, one hundred and nine students. Of these forty-two have entered different colleges and universities. Within the last ten years, commencing with 1882 the regents have from time to time raised the standard of scholarship required for securing their diploma, and the requirements of the academy have been risen in like proportion. During this period of ten years, eighty students have completed the course of study prescribed by the regents of the university and have received the regents' diploma, also the diploma of the academy. Thirty-two of this number have entered college. There are at this writing twenty of the graduates of the academy pursuing their studies at different colleges and universities. Of these there are in Cornell university five young ladies and four gentlemen. The six following are pursuing under-graduate courses: Misses Laura A. BROWN, Nellie A. BURR, Jessie A. BURR, Estella M. JOHNSON; of the gentlemen Messrs. Edwin B. HIGBY and William M. LANE. Three are doing special post graduate work. Miss Frances T. SHELDON is taking an advanced course in biology, Messrs. That is about the case. - At the annual church meeting for the election of officers, held at the Line church on Saturday last, J. T. KITTS, O. F. BOWEN and P. E. WHITE were elected trustees; Boardman PERSONS, secretary, and J. T. KITTS, treasurer. The meeting was largely attended. A HAPPY NEW YEAR One of the largest gatherings at the Line church for many years, was that of New Year's eve. People came on that lovely night from all quarters to take part in the festivities and to witness the richly ladened trees, which bore gifts for scores who were present. The exercises consisted of recitations, dialogues and readings, interspersed with plenty of good singing and instrumental music, which was well received and greatly applauded. The genial and humorous J. B. L'HUILLIER personated Santa Claus, and when the jingle of the merry bells were heard without, it was evident that the frostly old sage was coming, and so he did come much to the merriment of all. To say the least it was a happy New Year indeed. DEATH OF WILLIAM C. CLARK Last Saturday a large concourse of relatives and friends attended the funeral of one of our most estimable citizens, William C. CLARK, who died after a few days illness, December 29th, at the age of 72 years. Mr. CLARK during his lifetime was one of our most active and influential citizens. He had held many town and county offices, and his councils were generally in the right. Mr. CLARK was an active member of the Denmark grange, and was formerly treasurer of the same. We shall miss his going in and out among our numbers. The church of ? has also lost an ardent supporter, and the community at large will mourn the loss of one whose life has been well spent. Mr. CLARK leaves a widow, three sons and one daughter to mourn the departure of a kind and endearing husband and an indulgent father, viz: Eugene and Frank CLARK of Kansas City, Mo., who were present at the funeral; C. B. CLARK of Deer River, and Mrs. C. A. THOMPSON, of Copenhagen. Rev. J. K. GRIFFITH, pastor of the Congregational church of Copenhagen, officiated at the funeral. The deeply bereaved family, two of whom are invalids, will have the sympathy of all. transcribed by Sheila Lofft Strickland

I have been researching Kirch in the Lewis County area....... I have been finding some important info...... Then a *cousin* gets in touch and she has tons. How great! Now suddenly she says that since there are a couple of discrepancies in a date and a marriage name ... she is pulling my tree out of the line and decreed we are not related!! I was thinking, yes, more research and perhaps we could find the reason. LOLOLOLOLOL I feel like I have had the rug pulled out from under me.. I was getting real comfortable being a *part* of this ancestry! *sigh* not so easy come.. not so easy go, eh!? Has anyone else ever experienced a sense of loss with a situation like this. (Personally I think it still could be the same, just needs a bit more digging) I have to admit.... part of me doesn't want to...... LOLOLOLOL Just looking for a bit of sympathy... :-) :-) Ok, off to the search..Off to Croghan I go next week!! Have a super day!!!

Hi list, Were might I possible find microfilm of marriage & birth certificates from Croghan? Would the Lowville Library have copies of them? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Betty Collins Greenville, SC
Your local Family History Center can get a film of the Church records (marriages, Births, deaths, baptisms) for St. Stephen Catholic Church in Croghan from 1841-1915. What is available for each year varies but the catalog describes what's on the film. Go to www.familysearch.org and then the Family History Library, then Family History Library Catalog. On the search screen, type in Croghan and Lewis on the two lines. You'll bring up the description of the film. Hope this helps someone.
