After making a relatively quick trip to Lewis County, I have gained new information about my family. Dear List, Don't be surprised if some of you have seen this posting already. It is a copy of a posting I earlier sent to the NYSTLAWR list. I am a descendant of Hiram Harris (b. VT, ca. 1805, d. St. Lawrence Co., 1878), Charles Harris (b. Annsville Tp., Oneida Co., NY, 1829, d. Oswegatchie, NY, 1907), Lyndon George Harris (b. Pitcairn Tp., St. Lawrence Co., NY, 1871, d. Lowville, NY, 1954), Everette Charles Harris (b. Fine Tp., St. Lawrence Co., NY, 1911, d. Watertown, NY, 1983). According to statements attributed to my grandfather, Lyndon George, and written down by my mother, the father of Hiram Harris (first name unknown) "was killed during the War of 1812 at the Battle of Sackets Harbor." Does anyone have knowledge of a list of casualties for the Battle of Sackets Harbor? I would welcome such information or any suggestion as to how I might research soldiers (or sailors) of surname Harris that might have participated in the Battle of Sackets Harbor. Lee Harris Rush, NY
Hi, I'm new on this list, but I have been working for a long time with the folks on the Oneida List. I see some of my ancestors started in Lewis County. I am currently seeking information on the Sunderhaft family in Lewis County. Thank you. Joyce

Would a few of you be willing to click into the Lewis county site and then the Lewis county Message Board. It's right below the NY State map showing Lewis County. I've received a note from a researcher saying that his server connection is severed every time he links into the Message Board. I seem to be getting in just fine, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. <g> Am trying to pinpoint the problem before I go much further - and would appreciate your help. Let me know if you are having the same problems. Thanks. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylewis/ Jan Lewis County
I thank all of you for the suggestions or actions you took to help me find an alternate way to locate my great, great grandmother Anna Egloff's death record. When I visit Lewis County in a few weeks, I'll be pursuing some of those ideas on site. One nice thing about fellow genealogists is that we understand how important it is to help others when they hit those brick walls. One simple suggestion may be all that is needed to cause one to shift gears that will eventually lead to a problem solution. Ken Everard in NJ
Thank you Pat for your strong support for getting the Lewis County Historical Society (LCHS) transferred successfully and quickly to Lowville from Lyons Falls. In particular, the encouragement of Lewis County volunteers to help Lisa Becker get the valuable documents and books on the shelves is especially valuable. If we lived there, we would be in that group of supporters. Perhaps the LCHS could describe the situation, the types of assistants needed on a voluntary basis, and dates on its web site. When many of us go to Lowville this summer to pursue family research, we could all offer to contribute a few hours or days while there. A poster might also be placed in a prominent place in the genealogical section at the Court House for visitors to see and volunteer their help. LET'S SUPPORT THIS ACTION IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE. Ken Everard in NJ
Hello, Attention :Lewis co. I'm new to this web site and have very limited knowledge of what is available. I would like to hear from anyone who would be willing to do a little research on my g'father who lived in Lewis county from 1852 until the late 1800's. Mostly have interest in his two marriages. Approximately 1873 and 1883. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Contact me at : beulahland@alltel.net
Hi Listers I noted in the May 8th-14th 2002 Issue of the Journal & Republic Newspaper that the Lewis County Historical Association and the Archives will not be open to the public over the summer (per Ms Becker) and that they are shooting to have everything there by September 1st (not in stone). But the best is yet to come as one would say. I Though I would share this with you (knowing everyone is planning trips and all List members do not belong to the Society). I belong to the Historical Society, but have not received any notice or Newsletter from the Historical Society regarding this move so all information is from the local newspaper in Lewis County. I had seen an earlier newspaper report that this was trying to be worked out. Perhaps the Historical Society Members will receive something in letter form in the near future with more updated information of the closing date of the archives in Lyons Falls NY and projected opening at its new location in Lowville, NY when all the details become available. This will be a great advantage to us when completed as there will be more room to work and space to have more material in the open and available to researchers. We will also be closer to the Court House and that alone will save us that trip between Lowville and Lyons Fall. That was always a bummer. The Archives will be at the County Seat where it should be and never should have left. We should all realize that Lisa Becker, Lewis County Historian has done a marvelous job with the present conditions and very limited space at the old Lewis County archives and will be able to help even more when she gets into their new archive location on State St. Lowville NY. I hope that this move will draw many Local Volunteers that are needed to help her at the new Archives. Perhaps the County Legislators will consider getting at least a PT Paid Assistant to help her with all the detailed work that comes with this job. With the increased interest in Genealogy that is out there today and with people traveling from many states across the country to use this facility the workload is steadily increasing. The job of County Historian is a difficult position and Lisa Becker has shown a great interest in the history of Lewis County and the Lewis County Archives. This is something we should all show our gratitude for. With Genealogy Research being the Number 1 Hobby in the Country and with a growing interest in Ancestors from Lewis County, New York I am sure that the people using this facility has doubled over the past 10 years and will continue to grow in the future. We also have many Professional Genealogists and Authors researching their Ancestors and History in Lewis County. It is about time that the Lewis County Board of Legislators realized the importance of County History and preserving our Records, Books and all Historical Papers and/or material. In additon we should all be aware of the importance of this position and the great job being done by Lisa Becker. So let's all just take a moment to say-------------HAT's OFF TO LISA BECKER, Lewis County Historian, you are doing a GREAT JOB! Now you will be able to do an even better job. It's about time! Regards Pat R
Betty: I saw this very old small book a few years back at the Lowville Court House. The person in charge pulled it down from the top shelf of a closed cabinet just outside of his office. If much reorganization has been done, good luck. It would not be a much requested document but it helped me confirm a clue as to where my great grandparents were buried. Good luck. Here is just an irrelevant thought. When people check into the genealogy section at the Court House, they must usually register. Would it not be nice if the registration book would be posted! Reason: we may know of each other online but not in person. Wouldn't it be nice to spot a name we have become familiar with in our Lewis Rootsweb group so that we might introduce ourselves. . .and maybe have lunch together? I had the good fortune last year to meet an online colleague somewhat accidentally at the Lewis County Historical Society last summer. Just a random thought. Lowville, Lewis Co, NY printed in The Journal & Republican, Sept 30, 1926 - Harrison MONNAT and bride were given a reception on Wednesday evening at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank MONNAT, at Gooville. Fifty relatives and friends were present from Lowville, Castorland, Indian River, Croghan and Belfort. The occasion was a complete surprise to the couple. They received many gifts, including cut glass, silverware, aluminum, money, etc. The evening was pleasantly spent in old-time dancing, card playing and music. A wedding supper was served at midnight. The guests departed at a late hour, wishing the happy couple many years of wedded life. - Mr. and Mrs. Maurice BRUET were summoned to Utica by the death of Mrs. BRUET's father, Martin CURRAN, who died very suddenly in that city Sunday morning. Mr. CURRAN was well known here, having resided here for many years previous to his removal to Utica about twenty years ago. He was twice married. His first wife, Elizabeth SAMERY, died when Mrs. BRUET was a child. His second wife was Miss Mary CONNELLY, of Beaver Falls, now of Utica, who survives. The remains were brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. BRUET, and the funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Stephen's church; burial in St. Stephen's cemetery. - A birthday party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William McCARTHY of Lowville, Sunday evening, in honor of James F. MARTIN and John KOHLER, the occasion being their birthday, Mr. MARTIN being 75, Mr. KOHLER 39. About thirty-five relatives were present. A sumptuous supper was served, with two large birthday cakes gracing the table. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Oliver MARTIN and three children, <snip, the rest of the column is not in this xerox copy> - At the regular meeting of Santa Maria Circle, held Tuesday evening, Sept 21, the following officers were nominated: Regent, Edith BRUET; vice-regent, Clarissa RADIGAN; chancellor, Anna L. PIERCE; custodian, Katherine EVERARD; monitor, Cecelia LYNCH; recording secretary, Mamie TUNNEY; financial secretary, Angeline NORTZ; treasurer, Gertrude GRUNERT; scribe, Jane BACK; banner bearer, Nellie DULLO; inside guard, Flossie de La PORTE; outside guide, Mable EVERARD; first guide, Elizabeth BECK; second guard, Frances BESHA; organist, Irene KELLY; trustee (two years), Minnie von ZIEROLSHOFEN; trustee (one year) Leona HYNES. The business meeting was followed by a social evening, Mrs. Minnie HYNES, Mrs. Cecelia LYNCH, Mrs. Edith BRUET and Miss Jane BACK, being hostesses. The members appeared in costume and prizes were awarded to the following: Most modern gentlemen, Rose BESHA; most comic gentlemen, Anna BURKHARD: modern flapper, Lucille BACK; most comic lady, Clara BECKERT. Various games were enjoyed and prizes awarded to winners. A delicious supper was served, covers being laid out for fifty. A delightful evening was spent by all present. - The death of Mrs. Julien MONNAT, aged 77 years, occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nancy PARSONS, on Shady avenue, Friday evening at 8 o'clock, after a lingering illness of heart trouble. The deceased was born near Kirschnerville, August 28, 1849, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Duffer SNYDER, who were some of the earliest settlers in the vicinity of Kirschnerville. After her marriage to Julien MONNAT in April, 1870, they settled on a farm near Gooville, where they resided until four years ago, when ill health forced them to relinquish the strenuous duties of farm life. Since that time they have lived with their daughter, Mrs. Nancy PARSONS, spending part of the time also with their son, Ora MONNAT, at Indian River, Mr. and Mrs. MONNAT quietly observed their golden wedding in April, 1920. Besides her husband there survive four sons, Ora, of Indian River; Dell of Watertown; Henry of Rochester; William of this place and a daughter Mrs. Nancy PARSONS; also two sisters, Mrs. Joseph MONNAT and Miss Nancy SNYDER. The funeral was held Monday at 10 o'clock at St. Stephen's church of which she was a devout member. The many floral tributes and mass cards and the large attendance at the church were evidence of the high esteem of which she was held in this community. Relatives from out of town present at the funeral were Henry MONNAT, Rochester; Mr. and Mrs. Dell MONNAT and daughter Marion and Chris MONNAT, Watertown; Leonard MONNAT, Mrs. MUTHIG, Syracuse; Mrs. John RUTH, Utica; Mrs. Harry SWEET, Marcy; Stephen MONNAT, Mr. and Mrs. Frank RUBAR, John RUBAR, Carthage; and many relatives and friends from Lowville, Belfort and Indian River. Interment was made in St. Stephen's cemetery. transcribed by Sheila Lofft Strickland
