Hello, Does anyone on the list have any information on Allen PARKER? He was born in 1800, married Louisa PECK in 1829 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Lewis, NY. Children were: Henry, Alvira, Eliza Ann, Mary Jane, Sylvia Melissa, Permelia, Charles, and John Jay. Henry PARKER married Almina TUTTLE, widow of Carlos J. THOMAS. Alvira married John KELSEY. Eliza Ann married first Cornelius SIMMONS, then after his death,; his brother George SIMMONS. They lived in Windecker. Melissa married William GOUTREMOUT. Permelia married Job GREEN. Jane married Christopher Cornelius GALLOWAY. Charles and Jay move to Wisconsin, marrying in that area. Louisa Peck Parker died shortly after John Jay's birth in 1847, and Allen Parker married, second,, Eliza Ann (Bristol) STODDARD, widow of Richard Stoddard of Pinckney, who had two sons: Wayne and Jay. Allen PARKER and Eliza had the following children: Sarah Ann, Allen, junior, Ida Irene, Carson and Willie. Carson and Willie died young. Sarah Ann married John LASHER. Irene married Edward VARY. Allen, junior married Jane TERRILL. Allen Parker was a farmer in the Town of Harrisburgh until his death in 1882. The farm went to his son Allen, jr., who had two sons, Clarence and George. Clarence lived in Syracuse at the time of his father's death. I am trying to discover the parents and siblings of Allen PARKER, Sr. I believe that his father's name could have been William and that he had numerous brothers and sisters, among them Wells Parker, born 1819 in Lewis County, died 1893 in Michigan. Many of the above surnames remain in the Harrisburg/Lowville area today. I hope some of them have information which could help. Any help with this Parker family will be appreciated. Jean

How do I get a hold of Charlie Shaw? I have a Civil War Vet that was wounded & is listed in the 1890 US Census for Lewis County N Y as John C. Stevens. His actual name is Stephens. I would like to share info. Val Sharp
Hello, I would appreciate any help or look ups that anyone would be willing to do on my g'father. He was born: George W. Cole-1852 to Ambrose and Jane Cole of Lewis county. I'm especially interested in his two marriages, the second would be to my g'mother-Ellen. I believe they married in 1883. Any information on these marriages would be most helpful. Thanks.
Listers, I am a descendant of Hiram Harris, born about 1804 in Vermont. He and his wife, Mahala, resided for much of their adult lives in Edwards Township, St. Lawrence County. To date I have been unable to determine his ancestry. When reviewing the 1870 US census for Diana Township, Lewis County, I discovered an Albert Harris, age 52, b. NY. Living with him was Maria, age 24, born in NY, and Hiram, age 66, born in VT. This Hiram was of the right age and birthplace to be my great-great-grandfather and this Maria was of the right age and birthplace to be his youngest daughter which I had heretofore recorded as Muriel. Does anyone have information regarding this Albert Harris? Would I be correct in speculating that this Albert may be a brother of grandfather Hiram? Lee Harris
We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published a wonderful old bill from "Horace Bush Druggist & Apothecary And Dealer in Everything Pertaining to the Business" No. 88 State-street, Lowville N.Y. for supplies purchased for the LEWIS COUNTY POORHOUSE from November 31, 1867 through February 19, 1868. It is amusing to realize that they had to go back to buy more whiskey ($4.00 per gallon) twice in 4 days during the Christmas season! DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NEW YORK on the table of states, and finally on LEWIS County on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse) as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
First I would like to say that Charlie Shaw had a wonderful interview today on our TV station WWNY TV 7. The interview was about his book on local Civil War Vets and the extensive research he undertook in compiling the information. He was featured as one of The North Countries Finest! Thats for sure! Great job Charlie! Second I would like to let everyone know that Julia Karcher passed away this week, her husband Urban had passed in January. Julia was instrumental in keeping up genealogy records for the Farney, Virkler and Zehr Family Genealogy books. I believe she started working on the second update published in 1969 and then for years kept extensive records of subsequent marriages and births which led her to publish the third edition in 1989. She mentions in this edition that "the number of descendants alone exceeds 14,954, their places of residence include nearly all of the states in the union and many foreign countries." After local marriages or births you could anticipate a call or letter from Julia seeking the correct information needed for her records- Julia and those calls and letters will be missed! Julia's husband Urban wrote the preface of her 1969 book part of it goes like this.. . "....Therefore, by becoming acquainted with each other, perhaps through the pages of this book, we can jointly remember the goals of our forefathers. Let us strive earnestly together, wherever we are and whatever we may be doing to eulogize those who beget us by the wide and honest use of our exclusive God given abilities." -U.K. Charlie and Julia you have done well! -Charmaine
