1. [NYLEWIS] Newspaper Article - Harris, Hosmer, Combs
2. Lee/Vi Harris
3. I have in my possession a transcription of a newspaper article dated September 28, 1908 which I believe I obtained from a contribution by someone on the Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence rootsweb list. It relates the murder in Fine, NY of Harry Hosmer by Leslie Combs in front of the home of Lyndon Harris. I believe this article may have appeared in the Watertown Daily Times but it could, just as easily, have been taken from another "North Country" newspaper. The first paragraph reads in part as follows: "Fine, St. Lawrence Co., Sept. 28, 1908 - Harry Hosmer, 21 years of age, was shot and instantly killed by Leslie Combs, 18 years of age, about two miles from this village between 9 and 10 last night. The crime of murder was committed after Combs had robbed his victim and is believed to have been carried out because he thought Hosmer was holding back from him part of the money he had with him . . . . It is believed at Fine that he [Combs] was on his way to the home of Justice of the Peace, Lyndon Harris, before whom he was [arraigned(?)] on a burglary charge a year ago, and that he was bent on killing the justice with the 28-caliber rifle that he carried with him." Can anyone confirm that this article was originally in the Watertown Daily Times or, if not, identify the newspaper of publication? In either case, what was the date the newspaper was published? Lee Harris

1. Re: [NYLEWIS] BAKER, HALL, BLISS, HALLIDAY, HITCHCOCK, WHITE approx 1855to?
2. Hello Charmaine, There must be more than 1 Peter BAKER in Lewis Co. I don't know the distance from Boonville to Croghan. The listing for St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan, NY there is Peter BAKER 1833-1910, Mary Kampney, his wife 1835-1911, Jennie 1867-1905. I would like to find the parents of this Peter BAKER. I think he died 15 Nov 1910 in Croghan. In the Journal and Republican, Lowville, NY, Thursday, Nov 17, 1910 Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock occurred the death of Peter Baker a highly esteemed and aged resident of this village. Mr. Baker had been suffering from a cold for the past few days but there was apparently nothing alarming about his condition. Abour an hour before his death he was about his home as usual and his, sudden death, due to heart failure, was a great shock to his aged wife. He was a life long resident of this place and had a host of warm friends who will sincerely regret to hear of his death. Besides his widow he is survived by one son, Christopher Baker, of Michigan, and three daughters, Mrs. Christopher Krichmire, Mrs. P. H. Strife and Mrs. William Schindler, all of Carthage. Then in the 1850 census for Croghan, dwg #2110, Peter BAKER age 41, laborer, born Germany, Nancy, age 42, Michael age 8, Peter age 6. I would like to find the parents of this Peter BAKER as well. Regards, Sheila Lofft Strickland In a message dated 6/5/2003 8:28:02 AM Eastern Daylight Time, cjcamp@northnet.org writes: > Subj: [NYLEWIS] BAKER, HALL, BLISS, HALLIDAY, HITCHCOCK, WHITE approx > 1855to? > Date: 6/5/2003 8:28:02 AM Eastern Daylight Time > From: cjcamp@northnet.org > To: NYLEWIS-L@rootsweb.com > Sent from the Internet > > > > Adaline/Abbie/Ade HALL > > Caroline HALLIDAY > > Peter BAKER > > Would anyone have these names in their genealogy? > Peter BAKER was from Boonville- quite possibly ran a boarding house?? > Who was his wife? 1. [NYLEWIS] BAKER, HALL, BLISS, HALLIDAY, HITCHCOCK, WHITE approx 1855to?
2. Charmaine
3. Adaline/Abbie/Ade HALL Caroline HALLIDAY Peter BAKER Would anyone have these names in their genealogy? Peter BAKER was from Boonville- quite possibly ran a boarding house?? Who was his wife? What is his DOB? Caroline HALLIDAY -her married name I believe.....what was her maiden name? Believe she was married to a Julius Bliss prior to her marriage to HALLIDAY. Adaline HALL- this could be Abbie Stanton- she may have married a man by the name of HALL. She would later marry Julius Bliss. Story goes that Julius Bliss was in the Civil War and when he returned home he did not go to see Caroline. She divorced him and possibly re-married to a Halliday. There is also a connection to the surnames WHITE and HITCHCOCK. -Charmaine

1. [NYLEWIS] RE: Old Archives Being Returned to their Original Home
2. In a recent article I read I noted the following regarding material that had previously been in the New York State Archives in Albany New York. I was wondering if any such material might of made its way to the Local Town Clerk Archives or County Archives in Lewis County? Anyone got any input regarding this. This Article is: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=87596 &category=REGION&BCCode=HOME "As the offices of the State Archives undergo a seven-year, $7.5 million renovation, forgotten documents have been found, and there is no longer room for many cataloged pages of local history to stay there. Since the mid-1990s, they have been going back to their old homes". Regards Pat R

1. [NYLEWIS] More POORHOUSE Information
2. Poor House Lady
3. We would like to invite you to again re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published another wonderful old bill for the LEWIS County Poorhouse. This one is from a fish market! And it has a great illustration of a fish on the masthead. (I like those old invoices and receipts a whole lot more than today's computer generated bills and receipts printed in disappearing ink!) Hope you enjoy! DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NEW YORK on the table of states, and finally on LEWIS County on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse) as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

2. Hi Ken Have you ever gone to the NY State Newspaper Project? http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/ Select Counties and you will note that LEWIS is listed and there you will find all the Journal & Republic Newspapers by year and the film numbers. These are available by interlibrary loan and you could view them at your local Library near your home. Your Library no doubt has a viewer. Worth checking out and this is another valuable tool for research. Warm Regards and Happy Hunting Pat R

3. Hi Pat: Thanks for your informative response. I have checked a few of the older census reports in the 1800s but not 1930. You and Carolyn Virkler who also responded have something in common. Your mothers were patients of Dr. Gerard. A few cousins in Lowville may also be added to your list although I haven't touched base with all of them as yet. From the 1880 census, we have a listing of the Gerards and some of the names you mention are there. Unfortunately, the Gerard name is extremely common. While my Gerard relative is not listed in the Family History Center records, a twin or cousin is--James Gerard. He and Antoine (Anton) both served in the Civil War and are buried with the family in St. Stephen's Cemetery. I've sent for their death records along with my great great Aunt Appoline's. Hopefully, there will be some further clues there. I have their marriage date information from the Moselle area in France. Your idea of searching old phone books and directories is valuable. Next time up, I will stop at the Lewis County Historical Society office in Lowville to check those documents. At some point I'll check the 1830 census as well. I just studied the current Boonville-Lowville phone book with only one possible result: Joseph Gerrard (2 r's) from the Boonville area in West Leyden. Would you happen to know whether the J&R newspaper for Lewis County has archived copies and might respond to requests? I know The Watertown Times is quite good at helping but small papers might not be able to afford such service. I hope you and your husband are both doing well. 2. Hi Ken There were several Gerard Families in Lewis County in the 1850's. There was Joseph in Croghan, Charles in Lowville, John, Rosella & Susan all in New Breman and a Joseph in Jefferson County NY. All were from France. Now in the 1940's and 1950's there was still Gerard's in Lowville NY. There was Dr Gerard and he was my mother's Dr. I am sure that it would not be difficult to find information on him since there were very few Dr's in Lewis County at that time. Have you searched the 1930's Census? Also how about the Lowville Telephone Book for that Era, Village Directory and I am sure that there are mentions of the family in the Lowville Journal. In the 1j930's there was an Edmond & Cora Gerard living in Lowville and perhaps that was his parents. Warm Regards Pat R I recognized the name immediately when I saw your message.

1. [NYLEWIS] Gerard
2. Ken Everard
3. Greetings All Now that I have tracked down my great grandparents, Christopher and Anna Everard, to villages in the Moselle Department in Lorraine, France, I am commencing a search for one of Christopher Everard's sisters named Appoline in France where she married Antoine Eugene Gerard. Up to this point I have not found anyone who is familiar with a single Lewis County Gerard family but at this point I am not giving up the search. Antoine and perhaps a James Gerard both served in the Civil War. My belief is that they are closely related perhaps to the point of being twins because both have the same birth date, at least according to an LDS record. Both are buried in St. Stephens Cemetery in Croghan as are a few other Gerards at the same location, including Appoline who was called Pauline, rather than Appoline, in some of the census records. It is possible that the Gerards moved to surrounding counties if they are not in Lewis. If anyone has information or suggestions, I would appreciate hearing from you. Ken
