I made a check of this name in the 1840 census, and found a "Henry S." in Brownville Township, Jefferson County. In the 1850 Federal Census. there are 10 spelled -berg, none in Jefferson County. There are 9 with alternate spellings, including Fredenbugh, one who is in Brownville. This may give you some clues, I hope. VB Johnson

I have encountered many Irish families that appear to have followed a common pattern of migration: a.. Mayo to NY, Lewis and Onondaga counties (Near Syracuse), particularly in the late 1840s b.. NY to IL, Rockford/Galena area (Winnebago and Jo Davies counties), sometimes for only a few years c.. IL to MN, Fillmore county (Wykoff, Fountain) Some families skipped Rockford, and others never got to MN, but the pattern seems pretty clear. Family names I have seen in this pattern include: O'HARA, LANGAN, MULROY, CUMMINGS, MALIA I would like to hear from anyone who can shed some light on this, or who shares my curiosity. Ted Pierce
Dick- "King Hiram" is a name from the Masonic Legend, so it was likely that King Hiram Freeman's father was a Mason, and he may have been as well. You might want to contact the archives at the Livingston Library at the Grand Lodge of New York and see if they have any rosters of lodges in your area which might list one of these gentlemen. Their Phone number is (212) 633-2639 and you can e-mail them at Livmalib@PIPELINE.COM. Depending on their holdings from any given lodge they may even have photos. This is a virtually unknown source of historical information which people would use more often, if they knew it was available. Researching the Henry O'Hara and Thomas Langan families who immigrated together from Ireland (Mayo) in the late 1840s. See abbreviated descendancies below. They lived together in the Highmarket and Turin areas and were joined by the marriage in 1851/2 between Henry O'Hara and Mary Langan. The Langans left for Rockford IL in the early 1850s and then went to Fillmore Cty, MN. The Henry O'Haras remained in Lewis Cty until the early 1870s, when they, too, went to Fillmore County. I have also seen many other families moving from Lewis Cty to Rockford and onto Fillmore Cty. Does anyone know of this migration pattern? Was there an organized Irish community in Lewis in those days? Thanks in advance. Hi Bob Thank you for the kind words. I have been rather silent as I took the death of my mother very deeply and needed time to realize that era of my life was forever gone. I talked to her 3-4 times per week and still pick up the phone and dial her number. It has been the hardest part of my life to overcome. I guess I thought that she would always be there. It was also my saddest trip to Lewis County. But it was the first time I had seen Snow in 8 years and I believe that mother knew I missed it. Each time I pick up the Bowen edition of "The History of Lewis County" I recall when Mother was searching for various Town information along with her beloved Arthur C Moore and realize that they together contributed a bit of history to the County that will live on forever. She also typed the book for publication. Her heart and soul went into it. That is where my love of history and Genealogy came from. I am still busy but silently doing Genealogy and doing a lecture at the Family History Library's "Family History Fair" here in Palm City, Florida on 1/31/2004 on "Finding your Hidden Ancestors". Next month I will do the Genealogical Society Program with the same program and on 2/28/2004 will do a Seminar on "Researching In New York State" in Stuart Florida. If any Lewis County friends such as yourself are in the area of Martin, St Lucie or surrounding Counties, you are welcome to attend. The fee is minimal. Good to hear from another Lewis County Researcher. Warm Regards Pat R
Hi Gary Could you furnish the first or given names for the families you are interested in and the dates that they were in Jefferson/Lewis Counties? This would help determine whom you are looking for. I assume you have this additional information on these families that would help to determine the correct family. Also you might consider sending a separate email for each individual Family giving the Given Name, Date and location of that specific family with their Surname and what information you are looking for. Regards Pat R
I would appreciate any "look up" help on my g'parents whose roots are in Lewis county. George W. Cole DOB..1852 son of Harvey Cole. George had two marriages...the second was to my g'mother "Ellen", probably married in 1883.. We don't know her maiden name, but believe she was married to someone named "Bunn" prior to marrying George. Thanks in advance for your time and effort. I.J. Quarterman

I am seeking information about the Wm., John, and Michael McCraith families who lived in Lewis Co., NY from 1860 through 1930. I also have a will distributee list for Michael McCraith's will in 1947 that lists names I can not tie into the family. Names unknown to me are: Wuerstle and Bielanski. I am trying to secure all the names of Wm. McCraith's children, as well. Thanks in advance, Betty Fudge Edgewood, IA bfudge@iowatelecom.net

I have hit a brick wall in looking for information about Susan Isabel Ryel, the second wife of Thomas Barmby Allison, Jr. whom she married November 28th, 1876. He was a widower with 3 sons ranging in age from 16 to 4. According to her obituary, she was born December 13, 1851 in Constableville, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. R. A. Ryel and was a devout Seventh Day Adventist. According to family information, since she was such a devout Seventh Day Adventist, the family kept both Saturday and Sunday. She died December 3, 1903 and is buried in the Allison family plot in the Rome Cemetery. She was the mother of Guy T. Allison. Any information will be appreciated. Elizabeth Allison
Lewis co. G'parents I would appreciate ANY help with ANY records pertaining to my g'parents in the latter part of 1800. marriages, divorces etc. He was George W. Cole 1852 - son of Ambrose F. Cole-Lewis co. Ellen Elizabeth- 1850- (possible maiden name of Zimmerman) believe she was previously married to a "Bunn". I think Geo. & Ellen married in 1883 and later moved to Michigan where they were registered in the 1900 census. Thanks in advance, Ilene beulahland@alltel.net
